Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.

Please save this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click >>> Run As Administrator

------------------------------------------------------

Download Combofix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here

------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

------------------------------------------------------

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
new HijackThis log
Add-Remove Programs.txt

If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

hi, i just started doing the requested task. When combofix prompted for a computer reboot and the computer tried to rebooted it went directly to startup repair. When startup repair finishes it says that is cannot repair the computer. The repair log says:

Last successful boot time : 9/12/20008 6:22:19 P< (GMT)
Number of reapir attemps 10:

Session details
-------
System disk = \Device\Harddisk0
Windos directory = C:\Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of rooot causes = 1

All the test performed say they completed successfully

Root cause found:
----
says it cannot determine the cause of the problem.

Im on another computer because, my other computer will just do that.

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

The computer won't do anything except go into startup repair? Has this happened before? Have you tried rebooting again? Can you boot into Safe Mode? Do you keep this computer on 24/7? The report says the last successful boot was on 9/12/08.

It doesn't change the time back, it only changes it to military time.

This might be our only option. You want to pick a point that was before you started having problems that brought you to the forum. Below is a link that will take you through the process. Let me know what happens.

Hi again, hsalf.

Quote:

Let's hold off on ComboFix for now.

Quote:

I'm afraid not. There was only one point available? And it was after the infections? Let's get some more information about the current state of your system.

How is your system behaving now? Same symptoms as when you first posted? Is it still slow? Any functions missing like Task Manager, etc.?

------------------------------------------------------
  • Download RSIT by random/random and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
  • Please attach info.txt to your reply.
To attach a file to a reply, simply
  • Click the Manage Attachments button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  • Copy and Paste the following into the Upload File from your Computer box:
    C:\rsit\info.txt
  • Click Upload

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

Well, since i first posted in the forum, i found 2 "programs" which i think are part of the virus or that the virus downloaded them, then i removed them from the start up. so now the computer is running "normal". but if i perform virus scans it finds infections, or sometimes i get a message from the anti-virus notifying a virus/infection. i got task manager back but the desktop background is still disabled(not that i care for now).

When i run RSIT as administrator is seems to run well until it show a window message saying:
"line -1:

Error: Subscript used with non-Array variable."

and the RSIT main window is paused in "Performing Registry Dump".

When i hit ok it closes RSIT.

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

Hi hsalf.

Did you run RSIT from the desktop or from the download manager? If you didn't run it from the desktop, try that please.

------------------------------------------------------

I need to see more. Please do the following:
  • Right-click on HijackThis.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Open the Misc Tools section and click the button labelled Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click the Save List button and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Post uninstall_list.txt in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------

Next, go Start >> Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Combofix.txt

A Notepad file should open. If it does, please post it in your next reply. If it doesn't, let me know.

------------------------------------------------------

Next, go Start >> Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A Notepad file should open. If it does, please post it in your next reply. If it doesn't, let me know.

C:\Combofix.txt
C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

Hi hsalf. This first program simply makes a backup of your registry in case something goes wrong. It doesn't do anything to your machine.

Please download ERUNT and Save it to your Desktop. (This is a utility that'll replicate a copy of your Registry)
  • Double-click erunt-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install it.
  • Right-click ERUNT on your desktop and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click OK to the Welcome message.
  • Next, select all the backup options:
    • System registry
    • Current User Registry
    • Other open user registry
  • Click OK and wait until the backup process is complete. (Note that depending on your system configuration this may take some time, and that the first bar is NOT a progress bar, just an indicator that the program is still running.)
  • Click OK to exit.
# Note: To ensure proper operation of ERUNT, you should be logged in as a system administrator.

------------------------------------------------------

This next program simply collects information about your computer, but more than HijackThis does.
  • Download OTViewIt.exe and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click OTViewIt.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click Run Scan
  • When it finishes, it will produce two logs.
  • OTViewIt.txt will be maximized and Extras.txt will be minimized. Please post both logs in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

Hi, ERUNT did the backup effectively. OTViewIt ran(from desktop and as administrator) fine for like 3 mis but at some point gives an error window that says:

"Win32 Error. Code:23.
Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"

Thanks for your help so far, really appreciate it.

Re: Trojan horse dropper.29.ax and generic_c.vcz

Hi hsalf.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart your computer.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy/Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

------------------------------------------------------

Now see if OTViewIt will run to completion.
  • Right-click OTViewIt.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click Run Scan
  • When it finishes, it will produce two logs.
  • OTViewIt.txt will be maximized and Extras.txt will be minimized. Please post the logs in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.
