Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Hi there. Hope you can help me out. A friend asked to look at their PC as it was really slow as of late and suffered from multiple pop ups in I.E. 6. Ran Ad Aware and Spybot and both cleaned up a pile of items but can't get rid of a Virtumonde infection. After some research on the web, figured I was out of my league so here I am. :)
Anyway, read through the 5 steps and think I got it all covered. Note that previsouly, I was unable to go to the Windows Update site at all. I now go but it only says I have two driver updates and nothing more which makes no sense - don't think this HP Home version is that up to date. As well, I did disable an Internet Add On in I.E. - vtUkhiHw.dll - just before posting this and it seems to have stopped things. Just really not sure. My Panda log is attached and my HijackThis log is below: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 9:34:14 PM, on 8/21/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\New Boundary\PrismXL\PRISMXL.SYS C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmsrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return. Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. ![]() Please continue as follows: Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware. When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log. Also... Please go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following, then press Enter: C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Programs.txt A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply. If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Next steps....
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Thanks for uploading the file. Please delete [4]-Submit_2008-08-26@5.38.zip from your desktop now.
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Place a check next to the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [f8453103] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\idviharm.dll",b Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restart, and post a new HijackThis log. The error messages should be gone. Those are (were) from Windows reporting missing (malware) files at startup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Java(TM) 6 Update 3 Java(TM) 6 Update 5 These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall previous version when you update, nor tell you that you should. They also take up drive space. Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 7 alone, as it is the most recent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
Also post a new HijackThis log.

Re: Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Hi again - sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Silly thing called work tends to get in the way during the day ... :)
I deleted the line via HijackThis and rebooted. Here is a copy of the new HijackThis log per your instructions. Also after running this and creating the log, I submitted the files to the link provided and removed the Java items you mentioned. Finally I tried to run the online scanner but got an error message saying "Error: Update Failed (200)" after starting it up. Re: Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Hi again -
Please delete both files: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\tel.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Proxy Cdrom\8D4E957D This error message.... Did you try running the scanner again? Sometimes connections fail, etc... If still no joy, try this one: Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
**Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Virtumonde (sp.?) Infection
Good work.
Logs look good. These items can be deleted in a couple ways... "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\16\2485e150-26c2578b" "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\25\435b9f19-108eeca6" "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\4\6e96fd04-774caf9b" "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\55\20b605b7-2cd512da" "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\57\538bb179-41a952ca"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Or, you can use this application: Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This can be ignored, it's a likely part of an OEM application, such as AOL D:\i386\Apps\App17981\comps\toolbar\toolbr.exe The other items will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OKcombofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points. Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:
Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.

Woot! Thanks so much for your help. Already over at MS Windows Updates and getting things back up to snuff on that front. Will work though the rest of the links provided before passing the box back over to its rightful owner.
