HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Ok, quick synopsis: I've had more frequent pop-ups, but nothing insane. However, my computer has been running extremely unstable. My desktop backround has been replaced with an "ad" informing me of spyware infection and I've been unable to change it. My audio drivers constantly and randomly go out, leaving me without audio. If I leave my computer idle for 10 minutes or so Windows crashes and I get that blue screen. Upon restart, I get the blue screen 4 out of 5 times. Overall it runs very slowly when it is operable. I'm unable to update my virus definitions in both AdAware and Ewido (or whatever it's called) and my computer can't make it through a scan.

I went through the five steps, but was unable to complete the Panda scan as my computer would crash before completion. Here's my updated log, thanks in advance for any help--it's much appreciated:

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it’s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven’t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please post a fresh HijackThis log. However, you are using an old version of HijackThis, please follow the instructions below do download and run the latest version.

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
  1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
  3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
  5. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
  7. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  8. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
  9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You may uninstall/delete the older version once you have successfully downloaded and installed the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2.

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Hi,

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide very carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Hi,

There's evidence of a password stealing trojan in your logs. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a known clean computer. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too.

============================

Please disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings so that it will not interfere with the fixes:
· Start Norton Antivirus.
· Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
· Click Script Blocking.
· Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
· Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

============================

Programs to remove via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:

I see Ewido running in the system. Ewido is a defunct program; no longer exists, supported or updated and its guard will also interfere with our fixes. Please remove it.

Viewpoint is not malware but described as 'foistware'. It gets installed by AIM and you are not told about it. It can contribute to installation of adware programs. If you update AIM this program will be installed again. Just uninstall it again.

uTorrent and LimeWire are p2p file sharing programs. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Also by default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft.
I recommend very strongly that you remove them from your system.

=============================

These two entries in the HijackThis log look awfully suspicious to me. I can't find any information on them. Do you know anything about V0500Mon.exe?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\system32\V0500Ext.ax] C:\WINDOWS\system32\RegSvr32.exe /s C:\WINDOWS\system32\V0500Ext.ax
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [V0500Mon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\V0500Mon.exe

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath:

C:\WINDOWS\V0500Mon.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

Then, do the same for the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\V0500Ext.ax

If Jotti's service load is too high, or in addition, you can use the following scanner too:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

=================================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
      Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

=================================

Now we can continue with the cleaning process.
  • Open notepad (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad ) (It must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won't work)
  • Copy the entire contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as CFScript.txt
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.

Code:
<URL TO LOG>

KILLALL::

Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\hide_evr2.sys

Suspect::
C:\WINDOWS\V0500Mon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\V0500Ext.ax

FileLook::
C:\WINDOWS\V0500Mon.exe

Rootkit::
C:\WINDOWS\hide_evr2.sys

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"C:\\Program Files\\LimeWire\\LimeWire.exe"=-
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
Please let me know when the file is successfully uploaded.

================================

Please post back the Combofix.txt, a fresh HijackThis log and the file analysis reports from Jotti's and VirusTotal.

Thanks again for sticking with this.

Ok, the file that ComboFix requested to be sent, was done so successfully.

For whatever reason VirusTotal didn't work, but here are the analysis reports from Jotti:

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Hi,

Thanks for submitting the file. It has been received. How is the computer behaving now?

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following:

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)

Close all browsers and windows other than HijackThis and click on 'fix checked'.

===============================

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

My computer was running slightly faster, but since the scan I just did it seems to be running slower.

Here's the new scan, I deleted those two files via HiJack This...

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Hi,

You can delete [4]-Submit_2008-08-26@22.13.zip from your desktop now.

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\ is your antivirus program's quarantine cache. You should delete the contents. Please use Symantec's guide to remove the files from quarantine. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...on=1#_Section1

The rest will be taken care of when we uninstall Combofix.

===================================

If you have no further malware issues, you're all set to go. The logs are clean.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

    This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

===================================

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here for your future reference.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!

Re: HighJack this log. Please help, already went through the suggested 5 steps...

Ok, I deleted the quarantined files, but before I uninstalled ComboFix, I wanted to ask you about some running processes in my Windows Task Manager. Things like svchost.exe, CCAPP.EXE, lsass.exe seem suspicous to me and take up quite a bit of memory (at least svchost). Are these supposed to be there? There's are just a few of the processes I have concerns about.

svchost.exe and lsass.exe are legitimate Microsoft files and CCAPP.EXE belongs to Symantec/Norton.

svchost.exe (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. It's normal to have several of them running.
lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanisms. It specifically deals with local security and login policies.
ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus. It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not function correctly if this service is stopped.

I hope this helps in easing your concerns. Same file names are sometimes used by malware but you can be assured that's not the case here.
