Posted a "help wanted" in McAfee's forum and was directed here to post the HiJack This Log. Am having to post this on a different computer than the one infected due to IE constantly shutting down. Currently running Windows XP home version SP3 with updated McAfee virus scan engines and dat, etc. Was unable to run Panda scan due to IE shutting down. Below is HiJack this log.

Re: proscks trojan

Hello davidmcc and thank you for your kind patience.

This will require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

If you have to, download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and transfer them to the infected computer.

***************************************************

Download ComboFix.exe from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Re: proscks trojan

Thanks for the reply.

I could not start IE on the infected computer. I downloaded the Combo fix program on a memory stick from another computer and tried to copy and move it to the desktop of the infected computer with no luck. I could only put a shortcut to the desktop for Combo fix. I downloaded the windows XP set up program to the same memory stick.

Since your reply stated that it is important to download the combo fix program to the desktop, I am going to wait to hear back from you before I run it from the memory stick.

Yesterday I tried to backup personal data to a CD and begin to reformat the hard drive, but could not copy or move any of the data.

I sincerely appreciate your help

Re: proscks trojan

Hi davidmcc,

Instead of dragging and dropping ComboFix from your usb stick, single click ComboFix.exe, then select 'Edit' (in the menu bar at the top) then 'Copy'

Right click on your desktop and select 'Paste'.

Re: proscks trojan

Can't copy either one of the programs to the desktop. Selecting edit and copy, but the paste option is grayed out when moving the cursor to the desktop.

Sorry to be such a pain....

Re: proscks trojan

No worries, davidmcc. Is your Run command, or Task Manager working? If so, we can work that way.

Example of the command we'll be using:

"E:\ComboFix.exe" "E:\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe"

Where E: is the letter assigned to your USB stick, and the name of the file is the name of the package you downloaded from Microsoft - so please change the drive letter and file name if applicable.

The above command must be precise. Quote marks and spacing must be exactly as you see in my above example. There is a space between "E:\ComboFix.exe" and "E:\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe"

Either click Start>Run and type the command into the Run box and click OK

-or-

Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl Alt Del keys. Click File>New Task (Run...) at the top, then type the command into that box and click OK.

Re: proscks trojan

Your system should be in much better shape after running ComboFix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% -(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). Do not run it yet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt I'll need that in your next reply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

It's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Click on Scan Your PC Now
  • A "pop up" window will appear, or a new tab will open.
  • Click on Register
  • Choose the option you like most, but we recommend the Free Registration.
  • Click on Register
  • Enter your e-mail address, and create a password.
  • Select "I do not want to receive any type of information". (unless you want to receive such information)
  • Click on Send
  • Confirm registration, and continue by entering your user name and password, then click on Enter
  • Select Full Scan, then Click on Scan Now
  • Wait for the components to be loaded and installed. Don't close this window or go to another page while it is downloading. You can continue using the Internet by opening another window in your browser.
  • If it finds any malware it can disinfect, the Disinfect button will be enabled. Click on Disinfect
  • Please ignore the offer to buy the program. Click on Export To
  • Export the log and save it to your desktop.

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\SDFix\Report.txt
Online scan results (attached )
Update on system behavior

Re: proscks trojan

You're welcome, davidmcc.

Looking much better now.

One or more of the infections onboard was a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, change all passwords and login information. It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

==================================================

Your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

You may delete these tools from your desktop as they are no longer needed, and are updated quite frequently:

SDFix
SmitfraudFix

----------------------------------------

The following procedure will clear out the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

--------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 4.0 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?
Think Prevention

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.
