Trojan Horse KillAV.IL

Hey guys,

My AVG keeps giving me messages that I am infected with the Trojan Horse KillAV.IL.

The problem that I have actually noticed (there may be many others though) is that my computer is extremly sluggish. Restarting takes much much longer than normal as do all other tasks. Even getting through your five steps before posting was a marathon activity.

Also, when I tried to update Windows through Microsoft (Step 4), I was given an error message which basically said it couldn't continue with the update.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

I see you have SpyHunter installed on your system. This application was previously listed as a rogue program because of deceptive advertising. Please read here

Although no longer listed as such, we recommend uninstalling it via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel and downloading antispyware programs that have proven themselves tried and true. See here for a list of trustworthy antispyware products.

If you decide to uninstall it, also delete this Folder if it still exists:

Please download ComboFix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

First, we need to install the Windows Recovery Console.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery(repair) mode, if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Save it as it is originally named to your Desktop.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all antivirus and antispyware programs. Get help here



Then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Recovery Console.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Once the Recovery Console is installed, this blue window will appear:



Please continue as follows:

• Close/disable all antivirus and antispyware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here
• Please click Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.

Please post that log, ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleansing the system.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

Sorry I took so long to respond, my computer has been running so slow it's taken forever for me to get all those steps done, and I haven't had the time to sit and do it all at once, so I had to spread it out.

I tried to remove Spy Hunter via the Add/Remove programs feature in the Control Panel, but it would show up and say "Waiting for list to populate", but it would never populate. So I went and deleted the Enigma Software folder and all its contents, but I'm not sure what other files may have been associated with it elsewhere.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Open HijackThis and click on "Open the Misc Tools section" then click "Open Uninstall Manager..."

From the box on the left, select SpyHunter & click the "Delete this entry" button located on the right.

Close HijackThis now.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and Save it to your Desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
• Click the Download button to the right.
• Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
• Click Continue
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs
• Click (highlight) the following items:
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

• After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
  • Delete jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe from your desktop.

My computer is running much faster now...but it's still kind of funny. When I started to use Hijack This to get rid of Spy Hunter, and when I downloaded the new Java and tried to delete the old Java's, the computer was running just fine. But when I rebooted it to install the new Java, it was running really slow again. So after I got it installed, I restarted it again, and it started running normally again, and it is running fine now.

Is your system still running OK? Any messages from AVG? You really need to upgrade AVG from 7.5 to 8.0.

Here is the procedure:

Download AVG and Save it to your Desktop. Do not Run it yet.

Disconnect from the internet(pull the plug!)

Uninstall AVG7.5 via Add or Remove Programs then restart your computer.

Double-click on the avg_free~.exe file and follow the prompts to install it. I would suggest declining the AVG Toolbar during the install.

Reconnect to the internet, update AVG, and run a full system scan.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

When I did the fix.bat thing, it told me it was deleted sucessfully.

For the most part, the system has been running ok, but every so often it slows up for a bit, and sometimes the taskbar/start menu/little icons in the bottom right corner lag behind everything else and take a little longer to respond.

AVG hasn't given me any messages since about the time I first posted this thread and the scan with the new version didn't find anything.

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

FIREWALL
Using a third-party Firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one Firewall program as they will conflict with each other.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

• SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  
• SpywareGuard catches and blocks spyware installation and browser hijacking in real-time. See tutorial here
  
• IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  
• MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  
• Spybot - Search & Destroy is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Don't use the Immunize feature if you use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here

Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Everything is still running much slower than it was before all of this, but I will keep working with the info in that first link.

Also, everytime I try to open up My Computer, it freezes and stops responding.
