Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

Hi. I am running windos xp sp2 and recently switched from nod to avast. once I did so avast caught these and I moved them to the chest where the sit. I have had about 2 issues where I've had a popup and then been redirected to a virus site where they try to tell you that you may be infected. I've done everything above including the iespy, spyware blaster and hijack this

here is the hijackthis log file and I'd appreciate anyone willing to take some time to help me figure out the issue. Thanks in advance :)

Could you please be more specific. The only logs I have saved are panda's and hijack this. I also downloaded the spyware blaster. Did I miss a few steps or something?

Re: Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

Hello plsgoawaynow. Nothing is showing in your logs. We will run an online scan to look for remnants.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Delete the following File if it still exists:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Macromedia\Shockwave Player\xtras\download\TheGrooveAlliance\3DGrooveXtrav181\Groove.x32

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs
  • Click (highlight) the following items:
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
    • Delete jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.

**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Close/disable all running programs, including your antivirus and all antispyware programs.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unchecked.
  • Make sure the option Scan unwanted applications is checked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log and a description of any remaining problems.
------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

log.txt from ESET
new HijackThis log
report on system behavior

As for system reports...it hasn't been a constant thing, just the avast alerting once I switched from Nod32 back to avast. So there's these 3 things mentioned in my virus chest and then the few popups I've had where they try to tell you your infected and take you to a website with the most recent being this afternoon but before that was several days ago.

As always thanks for your time :)

Sounds like avast! is doing a good job. Empty your chest in avast.

Nothing is showing in your logs. What kinds of sites are you visiting when you get the popups? Users typically get constant popups when their machine is infected.

Re: Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

yeah I've had the popup before that was pretty similiam and it was none stop drive ya crazy popping up everywhere lol. The first time I noticed it I was at an invisionfree forum I visit daily. Today I was uploading photots to myspce and then forgot one and opened it to upload another and as it was loading my folder of pics to choose from the screen froze, avast went off and I couldn't close myspace because my avast was going off saying it couldn't move it to chest because it was being used. So I ran a manual scan.

Thanks for your help, this is just weird lol. Hopefully all is well though. Which of these programs I now have do you suggest I can toss? hijack this, the atf cleaner(I have cleanup on here if thats similiar), rsit and spywareblaster.

Do you have a preference over one or the other as far as nod32 and avast?

Re: Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

You can delete HijackThis and RSIT. I prefer ATF-Cleaner, but that's just me. Keep SpywareBlaster. See below.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

FIREWALL
Using a third-party Firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one Firewall program as they will conflict with each other.SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • SpywareGuard catches and blocks spyware installation and browser hijacking in real-time. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Don't use the Immunize feature if you use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

sorry it hasn't been alerting me there was a new reply. I will go through the list above and get some of those programs.

Will avast interfer with one of those 3rd party firewalls? Also I only have antivirus, no antispyware I don't believe so whats best for that? Would that be the spywareblaster or spywareguard?

Not that I am aware of. If you don't like the one you install, uninstall it and try another.

I use them all and recommend them all.

SUPERAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware are two other good, free on-demand antispyware scanners.

Whatever you use, update it often and scan with it often.

Re: Help with popcaploader.dll and A0025618.exe

I highly recommend the MVPS HOSTS file. Fast and simple. It is not a program. It is just a file that prevents you from receiving unsolicited ads.
