OS: Win XP Home Edition SP2

I have AntiVirus2008XP

My wife's laptop (WinXP Home Edition SP2), got the Antivirus2008XP malware yesterday. Exhaustive research led me here.

Here are a few symptom details:
- It had the Blue Screen wallpaper, warning that Spyware had been detected.

- I had Windows-looking security alerts popping up about every 5 minutes, claiming that there were 420 files infected. This number increased in chunks ... 652, then 779. This 779 was the final and consistant number that is shows.

- There were 3 odd files in Task Manager: Pphct9mj0et0j.exe, lphct9mj0et0j.exe & rhcpt9mj0et0j.exe. (The 1st is accurately named here. The others I was not quite as studious to get it accurately written down, but they appeared to be very similar to the Pph* one.) The Pph* would occassionally take 30% of CPU processing power, then fall back to 0%, on a very regular basis, while the system was quietly doing nothing. I attempted to End Task on the Pph* one a few times, and it failed with an error message.

- After a while a "fake" and not full screen Blue Screen appeared, appearing like the Microsoft memory dump details. It complained about an error SYSINTERNALS_GREAT_SITE. I figured it was over and pressed the power button the laptop. As I did this, briefly the screen flashed to desktop and windows that were previously opened. This is not normal behavior with a real Blue Screen, causing me to feel it was fake. I left the computer off and researched sites like yours, trying to figure out what to do next.

I took quite some time to feel convienced what sites where helpful, truthful and thorough. Thank goodness you are here.

I have since booted and began following your 5 Steps. The security popups continued the whole time. Another small dialog wanted me to update or install Antivirus 2008 XP and the "close dialog X" was disabled. I simply moved it out of the way. During the long scans, periodically the fake Blue Screen would appear. Learning that it flashed back before, I simply hit Esc and it would take me back. (At least that was nice.) The first time though, I was writing down the warning name, and it "timed out" and "rebooted". Interesting ... it showed a similarly smaller version of the Windows XP booting screen with an accurate looking progress bar. Again, hitting Esc took me back to the desktop and scanning software I was in the midst of. Those screens seemed a bit like screen savers ... lol.

Please help me make certain that Antivirus2008XP is completely gone.

Thanks in advance,

Brian1

P.S. I have both a Panda ActiveScan log and a Hijackthis log:

Those 5 steps are preliminary preparation to help our analysts in assessing the infection. Your system is still infected.

Please note that this section of the forum is very busy, and re-familiarize yourself with the Bumping Rules found in Step 5 of our sticky topic Important - Please Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help, which you should have read before posting. We ask that no one bump a thread before 72 hrs have passed, and then, only once. Premature bump posts will be deleted.

Thanks for understanding.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Thanks for helping me tetonbob.

In following the directions of running ComboFix, I have some differences that are holding me up. Here's what's happened:

- When downloading ComboFix, I save it to the desktop. (The download was done from BleepingComputer.) The icon looks different that the instructions show (i.e. it is not a red circle with a white 'X' inside. It is instead a red circle with some odd symbol inside. If desired, I could possibly paste it here. Let me know.) I simply assume that they've updated the software and have not updated the documentation / guide yet. Although it could be a fake, so I'm paying close attention.

- I do not have my XP Home CD handy, and it likely isn't SP2. So I follow the Microsoft KB for downloading the Win XP SP2 Home Edition boot disks. This is following step 3 of how-to-use-combofix guide. (I notice it mentions that it's for floppies. This probably doesn't matter, but you should know that this laptop only has a CD, and no floppy drive. It's probably okay because the guide says it'll put it in the booting process, it seems.)

{ here's the halting point }

- I drag and drop the WindowsXP-BootDisk icon onto the ComboFix icon, and it gives a warning dialog about the publisher not being verified. The guide seems to indicate that this is expected. So I continue.

- Now I have another confirmation dialog, warning this: "Roughly 1/100 machines failed to make it through the disinfection process !! Are you sure you want to do this??" My options are Yes or No. The dialog's 'X' close is disabled. I haven't seen this screen in any documentation or guides. It almost feels as though Antivirus2008XP is circumventing and injecting something into this process.

Now I'm worried ... and anxiously await word from you.

Thanks,

Brian1

P.S. I do not feel as though the Windows Recovery Console is actually "installed" on the computer yet. It seems like dragging the WindowsXP-BootDisk icon onto ComboFix icon is either incomplete or hasn't begun. So I imagine we should confirm it has been installed successfully.

Hi -

Yes, the icon to ComboFix has changed

You'll need to click on yes at that screen to continue.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Good job...

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
  2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Quote:
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/282135-i-have-antivirus2008xp.html#post1661864

    Registry::
    [-hkey_classes_root\install.install.1]
    [-hkey_classes_root\install.install]

    Collect::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysrest.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysrest32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\4B.tmp

    DirLook::
    C:\Program Files\Common

    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  3. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
  5. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

It has run successfully to the midst of step #4, but I've made a mistake.

- The log.txt file from ComboFix is on screen.
- The connectivity to the internet is good.
- The browser came onto screen with a message, and edit box to fill in a filename, and a button (I think it said browse).

- It didn't look as though the entire screen had painted or something. As I was reading some details on the screen (I need to put a ComboFix created ZIP filename from some documents folder), I noticed the ActiveX script is disallowed message at the top of the screen. Unfortunately, I pressed that to allow ActiveX scripts, assuming that the browser screen is okay, coming from ComboFix. IE has now displayed the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. ("Most likely causes: - You cannot connect to the Internet. - The website is encountering problems. - There might be a typing error in the address.") Now I notice the URL is a local file: "C:\ComboFix\CF-Submit.htm"

I am still connected successfully to the internet. The browser does not allow me to go back to the previous site. The file (nor even the directory) C:\ComboFix\CF-Submit.htm does not (or no longer) exists on the system.

I need to continue with Step #4 - "A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file." I've discovered the accurate filename and location. How might I send it to ComboFix's requested location?

I'm sorry for my error. What should I do now?

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Thanks. You can delete [4]-Submit_2008-08-21@15.01.zip from your desktop now, and empty the recycle bin.

Please also post the ComboFix log. If it's been closed it will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt

Let me know how the machine is behaving currently. There is still more work to do.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Ok. [4]*.ZIP file from desktop deleted.

I haven't done but a reboot. That went well. The desktop Antivirus2008XP message is gone. Also, I haven't seen security popups for some time. So it's getting much better. The fake Blue Screens were happening up until the latest fix or two. It may be gone, but it takes 20 min or longer to show ... so time will tell to confirm that.

Here is the ComboFix.txt file:

ATTENTION: VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

    Quote:
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/282135-i-have-antivirus2008xp.html

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Common

    Collect::
    C:\Program Files\Common\helper.sig
    C:\Program Files\Common\helper.dll

If you have troubles again, you know what to do.
  5. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
    • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
    • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
      • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
      • Next, click on the Delete Files button
      • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        • Applications and Applets
          Trace and Log Files
      • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
      • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
      • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Okay, I've run ComboFix successfully, to fix the helper.* files.

Java upgrade went very well. There was only one version / update to uninstall.

Thanks. I await word from you on what to do next. FWIW ... I notice that AntiVirus2008XP is still showing on the Start menu (on the left side, ABOVE the line separating the Most Recently Opened programs.)

Here are the log files. The ComboFix log files wasn't actually requested, but I'm sending it just in case. It was on screen BEFORE I drag-and-dropped the helper.* fix CFScript onto ComboFix. Ignore if unnecessary.

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

The AntiVirus 2008 XP on the start menu can be removed simply by right clicking on it, and selecting "Remove from the list"

As before, please delete the zipped file ComboFix created and placed on your desktop, and then empty the Recycle Bin.

Logs look good.

This next part will take some time.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

How is the machine behaving?

Re: I have AntiVirus2008XP

Actually, before you perform the online scan, can you do this, please?

Please go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following, then press Enter:

C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.
