Possible MSN Virus Infection
Hi, my computer has been sending spam since opening a file from MSN messenger. I have scanned my computer with Panda ActiveScan multiple times to remove the virus and would like to make sure that it was completely removed.

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Hello -
You may need to download the tools we need from this computer you're now communicating from, and transfer them to the affected one using a USB stick or other removable media, until we perform the first phases of cleaning. Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return. Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. ![]() Please continue as follows: Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware. When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log. Also: Please go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following, then press Enter: C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Programs.txt A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply. If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Hi, thanks for taking the time to help me out.
I have read through the instructions for ComboFix and tried to install the Windows XP Recovery Console. As I do not have the Windows CD with me, I have used the second method which requires dragging the microsoft file to ComboFix. However for both times that I have tried, there was an error shown stated below. "rootkit !! combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine." After the error, my computer would hang at the start up screen after the first reboot and will only start running again after 2-3 manual reboots later. Please let me know what I should do next. |

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Did ComboFix ever start up again after detecting the rootkit?

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
That's not what I meant.
After rebooting the computer, ComboFix will go to work. It may seem slow loading, but eventually the desktop should appear, and ComboFix should be present and working. How long did you wait before forcing a reboot? I fear that by forcing a reboot multiple times, you may have not only interrupted ComboFix while it was working, but possibly worsened the situation. Can you access Safe Mode?

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
After the reboot by ComboFix, it just froze at the start up screen for around 3 minutes. Should I retry installing the Windows Recovery Console and wait longer for the ComboFix to start working?
Edited In - I can't access the Safe Mode since 6 months ago. I'm not sure why this is happening though. Last edited by ShadowGal89; 08-22-2008 at 01:45 PM. |

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
3 minutes is not really that long a period of time for an infected machine.
Please remember this: Quote:
I see you've edited into your reply. Please be careful about editing in information. I subscribe to threads, and get notifications of new replies, but edits are not always noticed immediately. Better to add information in a new reply. Yes, try once again to install the Recovery Console with ComboFix. If the machine stalls at the logon screen for more than 10 minutes let me know.

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
I have tried reintalling again and this time round the computer hangs on the desktop instead after loading all the icons and programs. The mouse is still able to move.
I have left it for over 15 minutes without touching anything and ComboFix is not appearing. |

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Did ComboFix ask to reboot the machine again due to rootkit activity?
Can you open Task Manager? Ctrl + Alt + Del Can you access the Start menu? Is there a file, C:\bug.txt ?

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Also, was Norton disabled when you ran ComboFix? Did you receive any messages from Norton while it was running?

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Yes, ComboFix did ask to reboot the machine again due to rootkit activity.
No, I can't open the Task Manager. Ctrl + Alt + Del is not working for me. No, I can't access the Start menu either. I'm not sure if C:\bug.txt exists as the icons on the desktop are not working for me as well. |

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
Restart the machine, and see if you get back to a workable desktop.

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
AntiVirus must be disabled when running ComboFix, or it may interfere.

Re: Possible MSN Virus Infection
It will take a while to review that bug.txt
In the meantime, ensure the troubled machine is disconnected from the internet, please. Also, can you tell me if the version of Norton you have has a Script Blocker? Some versions have it accessible like so: Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings: Start Norton Antivirus. Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears. Click Script Blocking. Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended). Click OK You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.
