annoying adware popup antispyware 2009

my brother was on my laptop looking at stuff and somehow got this annoying adware, keeps popping up. sometimes every few seconds or minutes. i need help to get rid of it fast. i cant do anything with this thing. here is the hijacklog

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click >>> Run As Administrator

------------------------------------------------------

You have remnants of Norton(Symantec) on your system.

Please uninstall the following via the Programs and Features section of your Control Panel if they still exist:

LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)

Please download the Norton Removal Tool and Save it to your Desktop.

Close all programs.
Right-click the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and choose to Run as Administrator
Click Run
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Restart the computer if asked.
Then delete Norton_Removal_Tool.exe from your desktop.

Download Combofix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here

------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

ok i did as you told me and uninstall the norton thing. then i closed everything down and ran the combofix and i dont know if it finished doing what it was suppose to or not because my whole screen turned blue and said something about your computer has been infected and to keep from being damaged it has to shut down, then when i log back on my laptop, a small pop up said you have just been recovered from an unknown error or something like that. so i dont know if thats suppose to happen or not. do i have to run combofix again?

How long did it run? Did it run through the stages? What stage was it at when it shutdown? Are you sure you disabled your antivirus program?

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\ComboFix.txt

Did a log open up? If so, post it here along with a new HijackThis log.

If no log opens up, try running ComboFix.exe again using these instructions:

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

"%userprofile%\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /killall

Let me know what happens.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

I see you have P2P software ( uTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

If you decide to uninstall uTorrent, also delete these Folders if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\uTorrent

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please click Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and Save it to your Desktop.
Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
Click the Download button to the right.
Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
Click Continue
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs
Click (highlight) the following items:
- Java(TM) 6 Update 3
- Java(TM) 6 Update 5
- Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
- On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
- Next, click on the Delete Files button.
- There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  - Applications and Applets
  - Trace and Log Files
- Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
- Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
- Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

This is possibly one reason your computer is infected. Visiting cracksites/warezsites - and other questionable/illegal sites is always a risk.

Even a single click on the site can drop multiple forms of very serious malware, many of which disable your onboard protection, and System Restore.

If you install the cracked software, you are running executable files from these dubious, unknown sources. You are in effect giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over the operation of your computer.

Additionally, cracked programs are illegal. Before posting for help, uninstall any such applications.

ok i went in the backup files 1.zip but couldnt find backupfiles 2007-12-22-190003. i looked around and even put the other two files in search but couldnt find it. help?

The Alcohol file and folder are probably not present on drive C:, I just listed them to be sure.

The Alcohol file and folder are located in the backup zip file. Look for them in the zip file, not the backupfiles 2007-12-22-190003.

ok there are 66 zip folders and i went on the one you told me, the zip.1 and it shows two folders: C and E. inside folder C are these folders: HP, Intel, MCPP, Program Files. and 2 programs: sqmnoopt00.sqm and sqmdata00.sqm. Inside the E folder is: HP, preload, RECOVERY, SOURCES, Tools. and the others in the E folder looks like programs or something, these are it: USER, BLOCK.RIN, AUTOMODE, MASTER.LOG, Folder.htt, protected.ed and none the alcohol file to be found in here.

Well, I can't explain it. ESET is seeing this:

You are sure there is no Users folder in the C folder in that zip file?

Try a search again. Copy/Paste the following into the Search box:

ALCOHOL

Make sure you are searching in the D: drive and are searching with nothing hidden. Let me know what happens. If you still can't find them, we will move on.

once again i looked in the zip folder and nothing and put ALCOHOL in the search boxes then i went on search to find files or folders and found a shortcut and tried to open that and it said it has been changed or moved so this shortcut will no longer work properly. So what do i do now?

Not much more we can do. It seems you should be able to double-click on that zip folder and drill down by double-clicking to that rar file. Short of deleting the whole zip folder, we can't think of anything else. We'll just move on.

Are you having any issues with your system? You still haven't told me how it's behaving.

well no more pop ups or anything but my screen freezes once in a while and everything stop, i cant even move the mouse. usually im always on freestyle basketball playing but i havent been able to go on there for long, i try to play and everything freezes. This started happening the day i posted this thread. Oh and after i posted this, it has been showing some box popping up and microsoft and some numbers and letters saying it has stopped working and close down. There was a lot of that but it has stopped. I think thats maybe has to do with my whole screen keep freezing or something, i dont know. But all the antivirus 2008 pop up is gone, thank you for your help. I wanna know why i cant play that game anymore though.

Everytime i try to play that game, it freezes and i press ALT + F4 to exit and it takes a while and once its exit out, it shows a sign on the bottom right of my screen. It's a yellow triangle with a exclamation point in it and it says "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" it does that every time. How do i fix this?

Not all problems are caused by malware. This sounds like an Nvidia driver problem and I am not trained in dealing with driver, gaming, or hardware issues.

As this forum is concerned with malware removal, I suggest you seek expert advice in one of our other forums for driver and/or gaming support.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

FIREWALL
Using a third-party Firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one Firewall program as they will conflict with each other.

SPYWARE PREVENTION

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
SpywareGuard catches and blocks spyware installation and browser hijacking in real-time. See tutorial here
IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Spybot - Search & Destroy is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Don't use the Immunize feature if you use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here

Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Le18 Registered User Join Date: Jul 2008 Posts: 32 OS: windows vista	Re: annoying adware popup &quot;antispyware 2009&quot; ok i did as you told me and uninstall the norton thing. then i closed everything down and ran the combofix and i dont know if it finished doing what it was suppose to or not because my whole screen turned blue and said something about your computer has been infected and to keep from being damaged it has to shut down, then when i log back on my laptop, a small pop up said you have just been recovered from an unknown error or something like that. so i dont know if thats suppose to happen or not. do i have to run combofix again?

Did it run through the stages? What stage was it at when it shutdown? Are you sure you disabled your antivirus program? Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: C:\ComboFix.txt Did a log open up? If so, post it here along with a new HijackThis log. Inside the E folder is: HP, preload, RECOVERY, SOURCES, Tools. and the others in the E folder looks like programs or something, these are it: USER, BLOCK.RIN, AUTOMODE, MASTER.LOG, Folder.htt, protected.ed and none the alcohol file to be found in here.

This started happening the day i posted this thread. Oh and after i posted this, it has been showing some box popping up and microsoft and some numbers and letters saying it has stopped working and close down. There was a lot of that but it has stopped. I think thats maybe has to do with my whole screen keep freezing or something, i dont know. But all the antivirus 2008 pop up is gone, thank you for your help. I wanna know why i cant play that game anymore though.

It's a yellow triangle with a exclamation point in it and it says "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" it does that every time. How do i fix this?
