Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

My computer is running incredibly slow, I am getting random pop ups, and there are two LSASS.exe running in the background. In task manager one LSASS.exe is running under HP Owner and the other is running under system. I am using spyware terminator and when I run it it reads

Backdoor.VB.czs (Backdoor)
File C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\lsass.exe
Registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Rund LSA Shellu

I allow Spyware Terminator to remove it and it keeps coming back.

Below is the log from Deckard's System Scanner main and attached is the extra log from Deckard, and from Panda Active Scan

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Hi, welcome to tsf!

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Note: If you have Internet connection problems find and double left click the registry file dnsbak.reg located here: C:\Fixwareout\dnsbak.reg
and if you did, be sure to mention it to your helper.

Next: A text will open, Please post the contents for your forum helper.
Click OK to continue.
___________

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, close it and exit hijackthis.
____________

Make sure DSS is in your desktop.

Click start > run > copy and paste:

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

When the DSS configuration window comes out, make sure everything is checked under main.txt and nothing is checked under extra.txt

After that, click the "Scan!" button.

On your next reply, please include a
  • dss main.txt log
  • fixwareout log

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Hi,

*Your log shows that your norton antivirus is out of date. Is it the case? If so, may I know why? If you can still update, please update it now. Having an outdated antivirus is as good as having no antivirus at all. If your subscription has already ended, you can get a free one.

» AntiVir

*Please uninstall this program:

MultiMedia Software

you can do it via control panel > add/remove programs

then delete this folder afterwards: C:\Program Files\Video Add-on

*I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint related software are considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
_________

*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...1.0.0.15-3.cab

Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

*Delete this file: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.zip

We will no need to use it.

delete this file: C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\SpywareBot Scheduled Scan.job

*Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{15a13cf6-5bac-11d9-9d96-806d6172696f}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d2131a9c-3518-11dd-a231-000e9b0dbde3}]
Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
_________

*Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Click Start > Control Panel
  • Click Add/Remove Programs
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6u7, and install it to your computer.
  • Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

*Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. You may disconnect from the internet once you begin the scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

On your next reply, please include a
  • Fresh HijackThis log.
  • kaspersky scan log

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

I did everything on the 19th, but I have been having problems completing the Kapersky Scan. I just got it to scan today when I tried again, so I am attaching the log, but have been unable to save the Hijack This log as an attachment...it keeps reading HijackThis log invalid file. So I cut and pasted the contents of the log, in which I ran today. I still have the one from the 19th. Thank you for your help and time.

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Hi,

Don't worry about not being able to attach logs. I actually want them posted instead.

Since it seems that you have downloaded antivir already, I suggest you uninstall norton if you have no intentions on purchasing a new subscription.

Delete this file: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\V1234567\iesecurepages[1].htm

On your next reply, please include a
  • Fresh HijackThis log.
  • A detailed description on how's your machine running.

Smile Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

My machine seems to be running a lot better. I am not getting pop ups and the second LSASS has not returned. The only thing is recently internet explorer and some other programs have taken a while to load, but it is not doing it all the time. For example 2 days ago internet explorer took over 3 minutes to pop up and when it finally did 4 other windows popped up, but I think that is because they double clicked multiple times when it first did not appear. Other than that everything is fine. The only other question I have is may I delete the fix.reg on my desk top or move some place else? Thank you for all your help and time, you have been great. Please let me know if there is anything else to do.

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Hi,

Yes, you can delete tools that we have used to clean your computer, including fix.reg.

I really recommend you to uninstall one antivirus there. Having two at the same time will only cause conflict with your machine and it may even lower security.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
_________

Congratulations! Your log looks clean!

Click start > run > copy and paste:

combofix /u

That will hide your system files, clear your system restore cache and uninstall combofix.

Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

And miekiemoes' "How to Prevent Malware"

Happy safe surfing!

Note: Please reply to this thread one last time so I could mark it as resolved.

Grin Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Okay, I completed everything. I uninstalled one antivirus program - antivir and updated Norton. I could not complete that combofix /u task, because it would not run. It reads - Windows cannot find 'combofix'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. If this does not make a difference then we are good and you can close this out. Thank you so much for all your help.

Re: Pop ups, slow & lsass.exe running in background - backdoor.VB.czs

Sorry for that, I made a mistake.

Make sure you clean older restore points too:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
