Issue with ADWare...Please help

recently, i have been getting the same annoying ad popping up on various sites that i visit frequently (so not isolated to one site in particular).

the ad says "Congratulations!!! You've won a free prize. Click 2 Claim". also, the ad makes an annoying beeping noise over and over and doesn't stop unless i leave the site.

i have followed the 5 step process and performed a DSS scan. Below is my main txt results, and i have attached the extra txt file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

Hello -

You don't seem to have an AntiVirus application installed. Why is that? This is akin to digital suicide on today's internet. We will address that during the course of this fix.

Also....

P2P - I see you have P2P software ( Limewire ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall Limewire. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Be sure to use the package for Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

It does not appear as though DSS was allowed to download and install HijackThis. To produce a HijackThis log for your next reply, please do this:

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
  2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Quote:
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/276372-issue-adware-please-help.html

    Collect::
    C:\Program Files\Common\helper.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iehlpr32.dll

    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  3. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  5. Install this FREE AntiVirus program, update it, and run a full system scan.

    Avira AntiVir Personal

Here is a tutorial on it's setup and use:

    http://www.techsupportforum.com/content/Security/Articles/64.html

When the scan is complete, click on the Report button. A log file will open. Please post that in your next reply.

Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  6. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post logs from ComboFix (C:\ComboFix.txt), Avira and HijackThis

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

How is the machine behaving?

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

The beeping banner appears to be gone. Haven't seen it since the install of Service Pk2.

Occassionally on many sites i get a bar under the URL address that pops up and says "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Cllick here for options..." And when I click here, it just brings up Information Bar Help. Is this ok?

Here's the Kap log....

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

This will take care of the Kaspersky finds:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the Internet Explorer issue, try this:

Please check your ActiveX security settings

Internet Explorer Version 6.X

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools > Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box appears.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click the "Default Level" button, and then click OK.
5. Note: If the "Default Level" button is not active, then your browser already has the correct settings. You do not need to make any changes.

If still no joy, try this:

Please download Dial-a-Fix

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
  • Download/save the program and extract to it's own folder.
  • Check the box on the top right for SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography
  • Click Go

When the tool is ready (it will say READY. in the lower left of the screen), do this next:
  • In the WU/WUAU area click the button Flush SoftwareDistribution (Click Yes)

When the tool completes it's task (it will say READY. in the lower left of the screen), click on Exit.

Check your IE issue once again.

You may simply want to upgrade the machine to IE7, as it's more secure than IE6. You may also want to update Windows XP to Service Pack 3.

I'll have some final instructions for you. Let me know if the IE issue clears up.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

If updating your IE and Windows does not help, you may want to ask for assistance in the Internet Explorer section of the forums for that issue.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • Winpatrol

Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP//Vista. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Hi, glad to have helped.

Quote:

We had you install Avira, which is an AntiVirus software...you can look into other options if you like, but be sure only one AntiVirus software is installed at one time.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

Hi tetonbob,

Ad links keep appearing in browser back button in IE. I posted in the IE forum and they recommended that I check back with you first.

the issue with the malware was resolved but now i have more issues.

ISSUE#1
i am able to navigate the web on internet explorer. however, for many sites that i visit, when i click the "back" button, nothing happens. i usually have to click it twice to actually go back.

so i looked to see why, and i right clicked on the "back" button to see what previous sites it would take me back to, and the first site listed is a link to an ad (not the same one every time).

ISSUE#2
on most sites that i visit, i now see various "page cannot be displayed" areas on parts of pages. there will also be red x's on certain ads on various pages. why is this? is it normal?

ISSUE#3
I actually feel it's taking longer to load up sites than before the resolution performed above. did some of the programs i installed during the resolution cause my navigation process to slow down?

can you please help to resolve. thanks, much appreciated.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

Clear IE's cache.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Run ATF Cleaner again.

Post a HijackThis log.

Grab a screenshot of what you're trying to describe with the adlinks

In Windows a screenshot of the entire monitor, complete with taskbar, can be copied to the system clipboard by pressing the Print screen key (normally located in the top row on the right-hand side of the keyboard)..

You can then paste the clipboard into a program like MS Paint to save it as an image file or paste it directly into a document.
  1. Press the Print screen key
  2. Click the "Start" button (normally located in the bottom left of your screen).
  3. Click "Run" & type "mspaint" (without quotes) & click the "OK" button.
  4. Wait while the application "Paint" opens. Once it is open, proceed to the next step.
  5. Click the "Edit" menu and select "Paste".
  6. Click the "File" menu and select "Save As...". A dialog box will appear.
  7. In the "File name" field, enter a name of your choice.
  8. Click the "Save as type" drop-down and select "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE*;.JFIF)".
  9. Click the "Save" button.

Attach it in your next reply, please.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, browse to where you saved the file, and
  2. Click Upload.

Issue Number 2, ask in IE forum. I try to never use IE. I use Firefox or Opera browsers.

Issue Number 3, it's possible. Did you install the MVPS hosts file? If so, disable DNS Client service

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

* Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
* Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
* Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
* Select: Manual, or Disabled (recommended) click Apply/Ok and restart.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

Quote:

That is an ad being blocked.

Do these ad items only show up when you visit certain sites? Seems to be that's the case.

ign.com is an ad site which is blocked by the MVPS hosts file(and perhaps other protection agents). The sites you're visiting are trying to deliver ads to you, and the protections are not allowing it.

Example from my machine, using IE

Using Firefox:

I don't want to see ads. With Firefox, I don't even know they're missing. Note the lack of announcement - that "page cannot be displayed". With IE, you do.

Instead of just clicking the back button, use the dropdown menu to get to the page you want, or use another browser (Firefox does not cache those), or toggle the line in the hosts file responsible for the ads so you can see them. You can do this with a hosts file manager such as HostXpert, or manually add this character # in front of the line you want to toggle off like so:

#127.0.0.1 ads.ign.com #[McAfee.Cookie-IGN]

This had nothing to do with malware, just how your protections and browser are interacting with the sites you're visiting.

Your logs are still clean. Any other questions regarding IE and it's setup, please ask in the IE forum. Let them know I don't see any malware, and you should not have to return here. Thanks.

Re: Issue with ADWare...Please help

The following are from a machine I use to test malware, which has no protections installed. See the ads in the places you're seeing "page not displayed" ? That's what you're missing. I would not worry about it. If the back button is a big issue for you, change browsers. I would not remove the ad blocking, but that's me.
