Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
I have Windows XP and service pack 2. I have had many pop-ups lately (not constant, but fairly frequent), and the computer is running very slowly. I also having problems with cookies on Internet Explorer. I have them turned on, but sites respond as if they are not.
I attempted each of the five steps with some problems. I was unable to run scan with Panda ActiveScan because I was unable to log in after registering. Also, when trying to update my operating system through the Microsoft Windows update page, I recieved the error/message below. Also included are the results from the DSS scans. Thank you for your help. ---- [Error number: 0x8DDD0018] The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running: Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed) To make sure these services are running: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type services.msc and then click OK. 3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties. 4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. 5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties. 7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply. 8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties. 10. Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
Hi, welcome to tsf!
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Please continue as follows:
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system: C:\ComboFix.txt New HijackThis log.

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
I either do not have or can not find the Recoery Console CD, and I can not access this website to download it as it says:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 "Internet Explorer can not display the webpage" Are there and alternate links to dowload the Recovery Console? Thanks for your help. |

That's odd.. The site works ok here.
Try this direct link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
That worked. I downloaded the recovery console and Combo Fix. I have McAfee Security Center, and went here to see how to disable it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html But, those instructions do not work for me. I do not have an 'Exit' option when I right click. How do I disable it? Also, can you tell from my log if I have anything else that needs to be disabled before I run Combo Fix? Lastly, will I lose any information/files (other than infected items) from my system by using these tools? Thank you for your help. |

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
Actually, I can get McAfee disabled now, but is there anything else that needs to be disabled before I begin? Also, I will not lose any files or information by running this, will I?
Thanks. |

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
You need to disable teatimer and mcafee.
No, you will not lose any information or files when running combofix. But take note that tools we use always have risks. Chances of tools crashing your computer is very very minimal but I can never guarantee anyone 100% safety. It is also why we installed recovery console first. Should something unexpected happens, we have a backup plan and we can work to restore your computer.

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
Alright. I am trying to find out how to disable teatimer. Also McAfee said it found and removed a bunch of vundo trojans.

Re: Possible Malware - Frequent Pop-Ups - winlogon.exe
While both Tea timer and SpyBot are closed
Right click here and click save link as Save it as resetteatimer.bat to your desktop
Since it will not be needed again delete ResetTeaTimer.bat. You may turn the Tea timer back on via SpyBots' tools> resident page when your computer is clean. Note: If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
