Exclamation Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

Aloha tech support gurus! I was hoping someone could help me stop these constant "security alert/system alert/critical system warning" pop-ups and other malware. Problem began after installing what looked like a necessary ActiveX plugin to view a set of assembly instructions.

The following info was derived from Spybot S&D's deleted items log: AntiSpyCheck, Zlob.Downloader.vdt, SCKeylogger, Smitfraud-C, Smitfraud-C.gp, SpyLocked.FakeAlert, Win32.GGDoor.

Spybot S&D was installed shortly after the attack. I uninstalled IE7 to stop the constant relaunching of IE browsers. Per the instructions given for posting here I have completed all of the steps in order, including OS updates and reinstalling IE7. Running current avast! v4.8 with Windows firewall. There were no listed malware programs or rogue/suspect programs found in program list. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to add that in addition to the pop-up messages it launches what looks like a fake IE browser with something called windows-defense.com/2009/1/freescan.php?aid=880348-Windows Internet Explorer.

After closing that window cpu usage goes to 100% with a process called wcs.exe. I can kill it in task manager but it ultimately relaunches itself over and over.

This is making me crazy!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

========

P2P

P2P - I see you have P2P software LimeWire 4.18.2 installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are Here,
Here and Here.

If removing Limewire, also remove this folder C:\Program Files\Limewire

========

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist):

Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 7 installed

========

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. Do not run just yet, we will shortly

==========

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

One quick concern - my clock seems to be displaying in military time now and I'd like to switch it back to am/pm. However, the annoying pop-ups in the system tray seem to have disappeared finally!

Re: Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

Hello again

Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you have Firefox installed:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you have Opera installed:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

==========

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

Animated Tutorial Here

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

============

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Yes.

===========

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D46BEAA4-A304-40B3-A9DA-EC7F7F501F25} - (no file)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

============

You don't seem to have a firewall program installed. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:.

============

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
SkipFix::

File::
C:\elaine\music\limewire\joi caldwell.mp3
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEDFix.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\VCCLSID.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SrchSTS.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\VACFix.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEDFix.C.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\404Fix.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Process.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumphive.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WS2Fix.exe
Folder::
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\SmitfraudFix
C:\Documents and Settings\elaine.ELAINE-VAIO\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
Save this as CFscript

Refering to the picture above, drag CFscript into ComboFix.exe

Follow the prompts, and post the resulting log, C:\ComboFix.txt

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Warning:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

=============

You can keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish.

=============

Well done, your logs are clean.

Click start>run>type(or copy/paste command into run box):

ComboFix /u

Click ok.

==============

TrendProtect is a FREE browser plug-in that helps you avoid Web pages with unwanted content and hidden threats. TrendProtect rates the current page and pages listed in Google, MSN, and Yahoo search results. You can use the rating to decide if you want to visit or avoid a given Web page. To rate Web pages, TrendProtect refers to an extensive database that covers the following information for billions of Web pages:

* Content category
* Phishing scam detection
* Site reputation
* Page reputation

WOT Free helps you avoid disingenuous Internet content by allowing you to learn from others' experiences. WOT shows you website reputations on your browser, telling you how much other users trust a website. This helps you make better decisions while browsing and avoid phishing, malware, and other types of fraud. Reputations can also be added to web search results, Gmail, Wikipedia, and other selected sites.

WOT reputations are computed mainly from user testimonies. Sharing your knowledge with others is just a click away, without ever having to leave the site. We also collect data from hundreds of other sources (including PhishTank) to quickly warn you of emerging threats. Currently, WOT knows over 12 million websites.

Grin Re: Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

Aloha my friend! I have followed all of your instructions and everything seems to be working well again - no more pop-ups!!

I installed the Comodo firewall and several other programs you suggested. This process has taught me alot and I feel much more educated and will be more proactive from now on to keep everything safe.

Thank you so much for all of your help and patience!

Here is my final ComboFix log:

Re: Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

Hi,

One quick question before you go, did you install AskSBar?

AskSBar is advertising related, so it is considered adware and it may cause popups on your computer.

Look in add/remove for:

AskBar

Or

Search Assistant

Then delete this folder in blue:

C:\Program Files\AskSBar

Note: If there are no entries in add/remove for AskBar or Search Assistant, just delete the folder.

Aloha TheBruce1,

Once again I really want to thank you for all of your time and help! I am so glad to have discovered this website and will refer my friends and colleagues your way.

I had installed AskBar earlier, but have since removed it through HJT's "fix checked" option and from my program files.

I do have a few more questions about my current setup:

- Is it ok to run Windows standard built-in firewall and Comodo's firewall?

- Spybots S&D's teatimer makes boot up time almost 10 minutes. Is
there a way slim it down and make it faster?

- Should I keep all of the diagnostic utilities we installed or remove
them?

Thank you!

Hello again

No, turn off windows firewall if you have not done so already or if Comodo has not done for you.

1.Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.

Comodo`s firewall will give you much more protection than windows firewall would.

I have not used Spybots S&D for nearly two years, so i am afraid i cannot offer you help there, Teatimer can cause problems, i always had Teatimer turned off.
.
I mainly use antispyware applications for on demand scans and not real-time protection, as they tend to cover the same areas of protection covered by my antivirus/firewall software.

Follow advise in Post 8 from You can keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish.

Aloha TheBruce1,

Thank you again so much for all of your help! I have turned off Window's firewall and left Comodo's to run solo. I also have disabled S&D's teatimer temporarily, as it slows things down so much. I had already followed the steps in Post 8, so everything is great there.

Now, I have a new problem. It seems to be a windows permissions issue. I had let a friend's son use my laptop for a couple of hours, and now I can't start any programs or access anything on the hard drive. It will reboot, but I still have the same permissions issues. The exact message that appears whenever I try to access any of the programs says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

My friend's son is not exactly sure what he did, but now I'm pulling my hair out going crazy! Any advice? I'm so bummed since we had gotten things working perfectly.

Thanks!

Re: Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

If you still have Deckard System Scanner installed please run it again and post the main.txt in your reply, if you do not have DSS installed, then please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-08-12 01:08:14 ------------

I tried a few different ways to access the extra.txt file, but was not able to find it anywhere. It is not minimized and not listed under DSS's file. Since I am having access problems, it has been difficult just to see the files and harder to find them. In doing so, I accidentally started DSS's scanner again. I hope that doesn't compromise our efforts.

Thank you.

Re: Constant pop-ups: NetWorm-i.Virus@fp, Spyware.CyberLog-X

This account is a administrator account and not a user account?

Try disabling Comodo and see if the problem persists, switch on windows firewall first.

Good Morning,

This account is a administrator account and not a user account?
In order to run DSS, I had to log on as an administrator.

Try disabling Comodo and see if the problem persists, switch on windows firewall first.
I have tried that and am still having the same issues.

One other thing I can remember doing was deleting items that were found in Spybot S&D's (items from a scan done around 7/28) "recovery" page. Several instances of Smitfraud were listed there along with other malware. I do think I created screen shots in PowerPoint of these entries if they might be helpful.

Thank you.

Hello,

Click start> control panel> user accounts> click on your account> change my account type> change to computer admin> click change account type button> you may need to log on as admin to make changes.

Does the problem persist?

I can access the control panel, but it won't let me select anything. I can open "My Computer." Is there another way to get to user accounts?
