The best option at this time would be to use system restore. Restore the system back to just before your friends son used the computer, this should correct the problem.

Click start> all programs> accessories> system tools> system restore.

Good afternoon TheBruce1,

The best option at this time would be to use system restore. Restore the system back to just before your friends son used the computer, this should correct the problem.

Click start> all programs> accessories> system tools> system restore.

This sounds like a perfect option! I am still not able to use the start menu to select options. Is there another way to make these changes? I am able to access through "my computer" but I'm not sure how to get to the path you described.

Add: I was wondering if Comodo's firewall or any other security setting will affect or cause problems with system restore?

Thank you so much!

They should not affect system restore, if you are unable to restore the system back to before the problems occured, then please do this.

=========

Download Combofix from any of the links below. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: Disconnect from the internet and disable Avast and Comodo before running Combofix. Once Combofix has finished then enable Avast/Comodo and reconnect to the internet, post the Combofix.txt and a hijackthis log

Aloha TheBruce1,

Great news, the system restore worked perfectly! OMG!! Thank you so very much! I cannot thank you enough for all of your patience and time!!! I really appreciate you putting up with all of my questions and concerns - there were so many!

What can I do in the future to safeguard other users from modifying my files and such?

Much Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian)!!!

Aloha,

That is indeed good news, my guess is your friends son got a pop up from Comodo, whatever the pop up was he chose the wrong answer.

If this computer is going to be used not just by yourself, but others, you`ll need to password protect your account, you can do this by going into your account and setting up a password. Be careful of what password you use, make sure you and only you, knows what it is, also keep a back up somewhere safe(written on a piece of paper).

You`ll also need to set up limited user accounts, as a limited user they cannot make changes to the system(only admin can), as to limit problems like this from re-occurring.

These tutorial in the links below will guide you along the way.
