VAV and friends

Hi there, I was earlier on today attacked by VAV.exe, It claimed to be locating viruses on my PC, I nearly went along with it when I realised that I don't have Vista as my O/S (I have XP) and I I’ve never seen the program before in my life. I located the folder for it and deleted it and I also went into regedit and deleted any associated files I could find there. I thought I had sorted my issues before finding a sex address shortcut on my desktop and I also stumbled across another illegitimate health program called something very simple like Computer Health Care and upon looking in the folder I found various other sex named files.

No idea where this lot has crept up from but anyway I deleted that folder but I still can’t help but feel that I’m not entirely free from infection as my PC is still running rather slow. I’ve followed your steps but Panda Activescan failed to run and upon running DSS only a main.txt was issued with no extra.txt.

Anyway I have posted my log below, if someone could take a few moments to scan it and see if I have any problems in there I would be very grateful.

Another thing that I have just noticed which I feel is worth noteing down is that I cannot seem to enable the automatic Windows Security Alert, in my toolbar it is just a little red badge with a white cross.

Also since yesterday I appear to be getting bombarded with quite a number of pop ups.

* Start HijackThis
* Click on the Config button
* Click on the Misc Tools button
* Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
* You can click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next reply.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with all the required logs

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Right I've followed the said instructions, I don't know if this is normal but whilst running SDFix the following messages appeared in the dos style box:

'Findstr: cannot open %>!->> -?>!!-'

and was later followed by this message:

'The system cannot find the file Foundsvc.txt'

After SDfix I set up the windows recovery console and then I double click on Combofix, a little loading bar opens up over the icon then a blue window opens up very quickly for a split second and then thats it, nothing else happens! See below my report for SDfix and also attached my latest hijackthis log.

Hi, sorry about that, please find below my hijackthis uninstall list But as I said the combo fix doesn't appear to run, I double click on the icon and a little load bar appears over the icon for a couple of seconds then a blue window pops up for a split second and disapears and then nothing else happens, so I am unable to attain a combofix log as it wont actually run properly. I have all other programs closed down and disabled so Im not sure why it doesnt seem to want to run! Any ideas?

Yeah, tried that, got the same result as before. A little loading bar over the icon and the blue window pops up for a millisecond and then its gone again! What if I try it in safe mode?

Go Start >> Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

Note: You will have to changed the renamed Combofix back to its original name

S& D Spybot's Tea Timer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
Expand the "Tools" menu.
Click "Resident".
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Windows Defender

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools>Options.
Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Try to run Combofix again.

hmm....wish I had a positive reply for you but I'm still getting the exact same response from combofix. I've tried renaming it again just to be sure but still get the same response.

Ok, delete your current copy of Combofix( it maybe a bad download)and re-download again to your desktop, make sure nothing interfere`s with the download.

That done the trick, turns out that I had a duff download of ComboFix, re-downloaded it and the new one worked a treat. Please find below my combofix log with latest hijackthis log and uninstall list for good measure. Many Thanks.

P2P - I see you have P2P software BitComet 0.70 installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

JAVA OUTDATED

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
- On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
- Next, click on the Delete Files button
- There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  - Applications and Applets
    Trace and Log Files
- Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
- Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
- Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.
Click the Save Report As... button.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Wow! I truely can't thank you enough, my system is now running fine and dandy and seemingly free of any viral complaints, I definately owe you a pint....or ten!! I think without your help my only solution would have been throwing it out of my apartment window! I just hope it doesnt happen again, but in the unfortunate event that it does you've taught me a lot here and I've printed off the material so with a bit of luck I could maybe even sort my own mess out. But fingers crossed I'm hoping it won't come to that, still not entirely sure where the infection came from but I shall just have to surf with caution in future, once again I'm extremely grateful for your help, all the best!

dsd_uk Registered User Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 11 OS: XP	Hi there, I was earlier on today attacked by VAV.exe, It claimed to be locating viruses on my PC, I nearly went along with it when I realised that I don't have Vista as my O/S (I have XP) and I I’ve never seen the program before in my life. I located the folder for it and deleted it and I also went into regedit and deleted any associated files I could find there. I thought I had sorted my issues before finding a sex address shortcut on my desktop and I also stumbled across another illegitimate health program called something very simple like Computer Health Care and upon looking in the folder I found various other sex named files. No idea where this lot has crept up from but anyway I deleted that folder but I still can’t help but feel that I’m not entirely free from infection as my PC is still running rather slow. I’ve followed your steps but Panda Activescan failed to run and upon running DSS only a main.txt was issued with no extra.txt. Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean. Open Spybot Search & Destroy. In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected. Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt. Expand the "Tools" menu. Click "Resident". Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box. In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy. ========= Windows Defender Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. Open Windows Defender. Click on Tools>Options. Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)". After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections. Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser. I truely can't thank you enough, my system is now running fine and dandy and seemingly free of any viral complaints, I definately owe you a pint....or ten!! I think without your help my only solution would have been throwing it out of my apartment window! I just hope it doesnt happen again, but in the unfortunate event that it does you've taught me a lot here and I've printed off the material so with a bit of luck I could maybe even sort my own mess out. But fingers crossed I'm hoping it won't come to that, still not entirely sure where the infection came from but I shall just have to surf with caution in future, once again I'm extremely grateful for your help, all the best!
