help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

Hi, I'm new here, and I've been having some issues with my computer for the last few months. It wasn't so bad at first, but I think that it's gotten a lot worse recently.

I am running XP home edition on a laptop. I primarily use Firefox for browsing the internet, but occasionally, I use IE for specific sites and such. Whenever I open IE (and sometimes when I haven't even opened it), I get tons of IE popups of all sorts. The stuff has been messing with my IE homepage, too.

Basically every time I am connected to the internet, an "Auto-Protect Results" window pops up with a bunch of risks. One of the main ones is "Adware.MaxSearch". There is another one that it says a lot, but of course now that I'm trying to remember it's name, it won't pop up. It is Adware... something as well.

I have Symantec Antivirus.

Also, after the computer has been on for a while and firefox has been open for a while, flash stuff (youtube, other video sites) stops working. For example, in youtube, it will play the first two seconds of a video with no sound, and then stop completely.

I have gotten a couple of blue screens of death recently, too.

I ran the diagnostics and such from the five steps. Below is the contents of the main.txt file from the Deckard's System Scanner. I have attached the extra.txt file from this, as well as the results from the Panda ActiveScan.

Thanks for any help you can give me. I tried to be specific with my issues, but I probably left stuff out. If you have any questions for clarification, I can definitely try to answer them.

P2P

P2P - I see you have P2P software µTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are Here,

WildTangent Web Driver(Optional)<----Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Re: help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and sorry I am so late in my reply - I didn't have access to my computer yesterday.

I understand the inherent dangers in P2P software, but I am usually pretty careful about it, and don't really download very much. I appreciate the warning. I may dump it anyways, but I don't know.

I ran the ComboFix scan, and have attached the log file to this post. However, I wasn't sure what you meant when you asked for me to open HijackThis - I don't think I have this on my computer - is it on this site? or do you want me to do the stuff I did for my first post again?

Re: help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

Can you post a hijackthis log as well. If yiu do not have it installed then do this:

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

Animated Tutorial Here

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

Sorry for lagging again so much. The Kaspersky scan report is first, and then the hijackthis log.

My computer is working a lot better now. The majority of the issues went away with the first set of programs you told me to uninstall.

Thanks again for all the help.

Re: help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

Hello again

You have infected files in Norton`s quarantine folder, you may wish to delete those files, don`t worry those files cannot harm you from there.

============

You can keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish.

=============

Well done, your logs are clean.

Click start>run>type(or copy/paste command into run box):

ComboFix /u

Click ok.

==============

Clear IE6 cookies

*Open IE and click Tools
*Click on Internet Options
*Click on General Tab
*Click on Delte Temp Files & Cookies buttons.

Clear IE7 cookies

*On the Internet Explorer 7 Tools menu, click Internet Options. The Internet Options box should open to the General tab.
*On the General tab, in the Browsing History, click the Delete button. This will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache [that includes cookies too].
*Click OK, and then click OK again.

Clear Firefox cookies/cache

• Select "Tools"
• Select "Options".
• Select "Privacy".
• In "Settings" window put the check mark for Cookies,Cache,Browsing history and any others you want.
• Click OK.
• In Private area click "Clear Now".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES

1.Click Start,Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press OK.
2.Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended).

Useful Information and Programs to keep you safe.

TrendProtect is a FREE browser plug-in that helps you avoid Web pages with unwanted content and hidden threats. TrendProtect rates the current page and pages listed in Google, MSN, and Yahoo search results. You can use the rating to decide if you want to visit or avoid a given Web page. To rate Web pages, TrendProtect refers to an extensive database that covers the following information for billions of Web pages:

* Content category
* Phishing scam detection
* Site reputation
* Page reputation

WOT Free helps you avoid disingenuous Internet content by allowing you to learn from others' experiences. WOT shows you website reputations on your browser, telling you how much other users trust a website. This helps you make better decisions while browsing and avoid phishing, malware, and other types of fraud. Reputations can also be added to web search results, Gmail, Wikipedia, and other selected sites.

WOT reputations are computed mainly from user testimonies. Sharing your knowledge with others is just a click away, without ever having to leave the site. We also collect data from hundreds of other sources (including PhishTank) to quickly warn you of emerging threats. Currently, WOT knows over 12 million websites.
Note:Only compatible with Firefox 1.5 and higher.

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

If your having trouble downloading & extracting,see link below for guidance:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm

Once you have extracted the host file,double click on it and a new window will open.

Double-click on mvps.batand follow the prompts

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Please reply to this thread once more, as we may mark this as resolved, thanks.

Re: help needed with popups and blue screen - Adware.MaxSearch

How do I delete files from the quarantine folder?

Can I just right click and delete ATF-cleaner from the desktop? I don't see it in the add/remove programs or anything. Can/Should I delete some(all?) of the other programs I downloaded for scanning and such?

Thanks again for all the help. The problems are definitely resolved.

System Drive C: has 1.8 GiB(less than 15%) free.
If you have a lot of music/video files on this PC then you`ll need to move them to a USB stick, CD-R/DVD-R, Flashdrive or a external hard drive.

You`ll need to spend some time on familiarising yourself with Norton, so you know where all the parts are. See Here .

When you uninstall Combofix, it will not only uninstall Combofix, but Deckard System Scanner as well, you`ll need to uninstall Hijackthis via add/remove.
