Thumbs Down Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hello Everyone,

I have been getting these pop-ups stating that I have Spyware and infected with a trojan horse. Once I cancel out of that another pop-up occurs and directs me to this website:

hxxp://free-viruscan.com/id/4912933/4/1/ for IE Antivirus

It is really bad especially when I try and use IE. I am unable to go to the Windows Update site as it keeps redirecting me to the above link, so Step 4 in the Guide I am not able to do.

I have attached an image for you to view what pop-ups I am getting.

I have ran my server antivirus (advast) and I have run the Trend Micro Housecall too. I have run Cleanup!, AFT, IE-Spyad and CCleaner, as well as spybot and spyware blaster too. Still nothing to resolve this problem.

I am unable to run DSS as it crashes right at the end of the process with this error: AutoIT v3:dss.exe The instruction at "0x7c82a7ae" referenced memory at "0x0173b0da". The memory could not be written. Click Ok to terminate the program. Click Cancel to debug the program.

So I have uploaded the Hijack Logs in place of DSS.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hello tetonbob, I currently have Windows 2003 SP2 running on this machine that is infected and the Combofix is not compatible with the OS that I currently have. Can you please recommend another fix please.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

I missed that.

The infections on this machine typically require specialty tools to remove them.

Most of these tools are incompatible with that OS, as it is generally used in a corporate environment where the response would likely be to push a new clean image to the infected machine.

Have you tried running your Avast in safe mode? Is it the most current version?

We can try other methods, but frankly, with this infection it would probably be faster to restore your backups.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

That is what I was thinking...I really would hate to destroy and go from backups. I am one of these people that want to know why it broke and how to fix it, but fix it properly and not just dump.

I have run Advast in safe mode and still no luck. I am in the midst of installing AVG antivirus Network server and getting rid of Advast.

One of my junior admin's wrecked havoc on the server (and backup directories :( ), so this is just one of a few things I need to get done.

So if you can let me know of any other solutions to resolve this without having to just perform a backup it would be appreciated.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

You may want to consider Avira for Server. Avira has good definitions for Vundo. Vundo hooks into several processes, and it's just not that easy to remove, even when we can see it, hence the specialized tools we generally rely on.

Thanks tetonbob, I have downloaded Avira and it's scanning now. I will post more in the morning.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hi msweich -

See if DSS will run for you after your scan.

Perhaps download it afresh, as the previous AV may have jumped it.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hi mswiech -

That's very encouraging. Avira seems to have removed the active infection, and left only some orphans.

Go to Start > Run
Type:
  • regedit
Click OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to "File > Export"
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put backup
  • Choose to save it to C:\ or somewhere else safe so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the desktop!)
  • Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

=====================================

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{8AE578E0-6DF5-41E0-869F-F65A32D2F6BD}]

[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{C19CAA07-5CC4-4D9A-8154-6B361D6C8C79}]

[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{FECD1F04-5A35-4640-933B-F27BC949E7D7}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Locate and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\VuxEOXbc.ini2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run DSS once again, and post it's log..only main.txt will be produced this time.

Do not reboot until I've reviewed that log, please.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hello tetonbob, I was successful on the reg update. I was unable to find VuxE0Xbc.ini2 to delete it. I have re-run DSS and here are the logs:

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

File is still present. It's a remnant of the Vundo infection. Hidden/System files should be viewable, but check to make sure:

This is for XP, not sure if it's the exact same for Server:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\VuxEOXbc.ini2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or, just enter the full path in the Search box. That should take you to the file, you can right click on it and delete it from the search results pane.

I'd like to look at one more thing before we move forward.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa" /v "authentication packages" > service.txt
start notepad service.txt
Save this as peek.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on peek.bat & allow it to run. A notepad file will open. Copy that information into your next reply, please.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Hello tetonbob. I have successfully found that file. I did have the "show hidden files and folders" checked, but I also had to uncheck "hide protected operating system files" to be able to view that file.

Here is the output from the batch file:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa
authentication packages REG_MULTI_SZ msv1_0

Let me know if you like anything else. :)

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Great...you can reboot the machine as required.

Next, a followup scan. I think this should work for Server 2003. Let me know if it does not.

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. You may disconnect from the internet once you begin the scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me know how the machine is behaving.

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

tetonbob:

Here is the scan that I just did. Didn't find nothing. Let me know next course of action. I am able to open file and programs especially IE without those annoying pop-ups.

Thanks

Re: Pop-ups saying I have Spyware and infected with Trojan Horse

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete dss.exe

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you visit

Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
