Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hello wonderful analysts,
My laptop's issues began a couple of days ago, and I've spent a number of hours trying to fix it, to no avail. SYMPOMS: 1. The most troubling and obvious problem is that the commit charge (as I watch in the Task Manager) rises about 1 M every 2 seconds while the computer is idle / no open programs. Memory use continues to rise until the system runs out of memory, at which point it automatically increases the Virtual Memory. Then total memory usage slowly rises to the new limit. When it is reached, programs randomly shut down and I can't open new programs. It becomes nearly impossible to even bring up the Shut Down Windows dialog. None of the processes listed in Task Manager list a Memory Usage stat that comes close to explaining the huge total usage. 2. A secondary problem is that the system will not shut down properly (even if I try to turn it off while there's still plenty of memory available). The shut down process proceeds as follows: Individual programs are automatically stopped, desktop icons and the task bar disappear. Remaining are my wallpaper and cursor (Which still moves around when i move the mouse), but the process stops there. The computer never actually shuts down, and I'm forced to do a manual power off (holding power button for 8 seconds). 3. Also, when I try to run sysedit from the Run dialog, I get an error message: "sysedit // The handle is invalid." I've never tried to use sysedit before this though, so I don't know if it's related. STEPS TAKEN: When I began having problems I took all the usual steps. I checked running processes, uninstalled anything that could possibly be spyware, updated Windows (it was already up to date), and ran a slew of scans. I installed and ran Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, neither of which found anything (except for tracking cookies). I also ran Registry Mechanic and CCleaner (no effect on the problems, just housekeeping changes were made). I then ran TrendMicro's online HouseCall scanner. This scan discovered that two extra instances of csrss.exe were running under my user (unlike the legitimate System process). The virus executable was stored in C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe. The scanner deleted this file and the extra csrss executables no longer show in my Processes list. Csrss.exe still tries to run at startup, but the file no longer exists, so I get an error message every time the system starts. The problems continued, so I ran Avira's AntiVir PE scan. This turned up three files that it suspected of being backdoor servers, but I couldn't identify the files because the program randomly closed (probably due to the system running out of memory during the ~6 hour scan). I was unable to complete the Panda ActiveScan because my laptop runs out of memory before the scan can finish and my web browser shuts down. Before it shut down though, it did identify 6 infected files, but I don't know what they are because the scan doesn't finish. SOURCE: Against my better judgment, I downloaded and ran a fairly suspicious (possibly pirated) executable install file. Purporting to be a music software, the installer crashed. I noticed the problem the next day, so I'm guessing this was the source. Especially since I'm usually very prudent in my web usage. Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hi and welcome to TSF.
My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system. You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply. Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below. Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed. We'll begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix **Note: It is important that ComboFix is saved directly to your desktop** Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It's very simple to complete and will only take a few moments. A quick guide is detailed below. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. See here for a guide to disabling AV, Firewall and Anti-malware programmes. Once you've downloaded the appropriate RC setup package for your system to the desktop, follow these instructions:
Please post the log C:\ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review. NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of all CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hi Iain, thank you for your help!
After running Combofix, my system appears to be back to normal. I'm no longer having either of the problems I originally described. Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hi again
Good work – we’re not finished yet, so stay with me and let’s do this properly. Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below. P2P - I see you have P2P software (i.e. uTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgement on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. Although the P2P application itself may be 'clean', the files you download may well contain malware. P2P is often used as a method of distributing malware. This page will give you further information. Combofix
Code:
Folder:: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint Driver:: Viewpoint Manager Service ![]() Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe ![]() Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix.exe. When finished, it will produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt" Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. This may cause it to stall. CAUTION! Anyone else thinking of using the above script does so at their own risk - you may end up having to re-install Windows! Online Scan Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
This animation will guide you through the process: ![]() **Note** To optimise scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%. Please post back with the Kaspersky Log, C:\combofix.txt and a fresh HijackThis Log.

Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hi again
All your logs are clean. If there are no more problems we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. The following procedure will clear out the tools we've used as well as the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point. Referring to the image below ![]() Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bold text into the Run box and click OK: ComboFix /u Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. SnoopFree SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems. MVPS Hosts File The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file. Alternate Browsers Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Maxthon Firewalls A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall for XP does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: Comodo Personal Firewall Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Other Protection Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer. ERUNT & NTREGOPT ERUNT is a programme that will create automatic backups of your Registry. These backups can be used to help restore your system in the event of a serious crash. NTREGOPT will compact and optimise your Registry, to assist the smooth running of your system Additional Reading In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles PC Safety & Security - What Do I Need?. Making Internet Explorer Safer. Have a look here if your PC is still running a bit slow Is your PC running slow...? Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hi again. Thanks for the info.
When I tried to run "ComboFix /u" I got the following error message: Windows cannot find 'ComboFix'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. Best, Nick |

Re: Constantly rising memory usage - unknown infection
Hmmm...you can always just delete CF from the desktop, then delete the folder c:\qoobox.
