Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Hi all,

Below is my hijack this log. Everytime I boot up my firewall seems to be disabled. Also when AVG does a virus scan I used to get these two virus alerts...but havent the last time it ran

JS/Downloader.small
JS/Psyme

When I run a hijack this log I get this message too...."You have a particularly large amount of hijacked domains. Its probably better to delete the file itslef than to fix each item."

I have no idea which file its talking about. Can someone guide me through the process as I am somewhat PC challenged.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Hello and welcome to TSF

Apologises for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy lately. If you are still having malware problems, follow instructions below.

=========

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

=========

P2P

P2P - I see you have P2P software µTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are Here,
Here and Here.

==========

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs :

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 5 installed

============

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with all the required logs

==========

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

==========

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Quote:
Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3049C3E9-B461-4BC5-8870-4C09146192CA}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3049C3E9-B461-4BC5-8870-4C09146192CA}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]
Save this as CFscript

Refering to the picture above, drag CFscript into ComboFix.exe

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

Animated Tutorial Here

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Hello again Glenn

You have infected files in Outlook.pst/Deleted Items/Inbox.dbx and Sent Items, please remove those entries.

=========

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {e0fff7d8-a1a7-46ec-b79c-7363606c4005} - (no file)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

=========

You need to download the installation package for the Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install from Microsoft so that it can be used to install the Recovery Console on your computer. No validation required! Please select the download link below that's appropriate for your Operating System then download and save the setup package to your desktop. If necessary, change the language version to match your installation. Do NOT change the name of the downloaded file!
  1. Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  2. Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

OK....I've had some problems with this step.

Firstly, the .dbx files dont seem to be at that Outlook.pst address. Also, if I delete the .dbx files, does that mean I will lose all my emails??

Do I need to delete them all to get rid of the virus? I'm unclear on exactly what to delete.

Secondly, when I ran combofix with the service pack2 I first get a message saying that the Recovery Console is already installed. Therefore no CF_RC.txt file was produced. When I reboot the computer I do get the Recovery Console option. However I cant use the arrows to navigate to it and I cant use the 'Enter' button to choose an option. I have to wait until the timer runs out and get the default Windows start up option anyway.

The latest Hijack this log is below, with the R3 - AU-Radio toolbar option still there as I havent chosen to delet it yet.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Having major problems with msn messenger crashing my system now as well everytime I run it. Only just noticed it as I seldom go online chatting, but did today.

Do I need to delete them all to get rid of the virus? I'm unclear on exactly what to delete.
Only delete the files inside the folders, not the folders themselves(ie. deleted/inbox/sent)

So delete all files inside the inbox/sent/deleted folders, your pst. folder is your personal store folder.

Did this start happening when you firs installed the recovery console, can you tell me if you have this file present C:\Boot.bak.

Show Hidden Files/Folders

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Sorry for the late reply. Been busy with work all week. Really appreciate the help (and no doubt the patience), TB1

ok - Ive removed the deleted/sent items/inbox files

Uninstalled messenger...but cant reinstall it. When I try to I get this message...

"There was a problem with this installation. Windows Live Suit was not installed.

System Error details
Code: 0x80070643
Description: Fatal error during installation."

The c:\Boot.bak is not on my system.

Again - many thanks for the assistance.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

Code:
attrib -s -r -h c:\boot.ini
     copy c:\boot.ini c:\boot.bak
Check again to see if the Boot.bak file is present.

As for the MSN Messenger problem, this issue does not appear to be malware related. As our focus in this section is malware removal, you would be better served discussing your issues in the Windows XP section of this forum. Please let them know you've been cleared by the HijackThis Log Help section.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

I've had problems doing the above.

When I type those lines in I'm given the option of overwriting the existing boot.bak file.
Pressing 'yes' gives me an access denied.

However I still cant fin the boot.bak file, even though I can see all other hidden files.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Yep. Its there.
Windows asks me what program to open it with as it didnt recognize the .bak extension, so I just opened it with Notepad.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Hello again

What we will do now is delete the recovery console, follow the instructions carefully.

1) Right click on current copy of C:\Boot.ini & select 'Properties'. Then remove the file's 'Read-Only' attibute

2) Rename C:\Boot.ini to C:\Boot.old (Do not delete it)

3) Rename C:\Boot.bak to C:\Boot.ini

4) Right click on the new C:\Boot.ini & select 'Properties'. Then make the file 'Read-Only'

5) Reboot the machine. You will note that the Recovery Console is no longer an option on the Boot Menu

6) Delete the folder - C:\CmdCons

7) Delete C:\Boot.old

WARNING - Failure to strictly adhere to the above instructions may result in an unbootable machine.

=======

When completed run Deckard System Scanner once again, post the main.txt only.

Re: Hijack This Log....have a virus...I think??

Hi TB1,

renaming the boot.bak file will have to be done via MS Dos...since I still cant see that file via windows. Given the preciseness of this operation, can you give me the exact process/DOS command of how to rename that file.

The rest I believe I can do via windows.
