symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hi

I was drifting around my PC's directories this evening (supposed to be studying and it's a slow night...), when I spotted a symlcsv1.exe file in the C:/ users/Craig/AppData/Local/Temp directory.

I randomly did a Google search for "symlcsv1", which suggested that it may be some kind of trojan. One of the links I looked at suggested scanning the file at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ - I did so, and four of the twenty antivirus products suggested that it may be IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l (I've attached a screenshot of the scan results).

Further reading suggested that I undertake a Hijack This log, which I append below.

This is as far as I have taken it - I haven't tried to remove the symlcsv1.exe or run it etc. Would you be able to have a look at this and advise whether I need to do anything about it?

Many thanks,

Craig

We prefer a more comprehensive set of logs to assist in detecting any malware that may be present.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and Save it to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the Manage Attachments button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. Copy and Paste the following into the Upload File from your Computer box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Please post the following in your next reply:
main.txt
an attached extra.txt

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hi

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my post. I have attached the Deckard extra.txt file and the contents of the main.txt file follow. Since posting my original comment, I ran CCleaner - this was not an attempt to get rid of the symlcsv1.exe file, but CCleaner seems to have removed it from the Temp folder nonetheless. The computer's performance seems normal at the moment.

Thanks again,

Craig

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hello mithraea. Nothing is showing in your logs. We will do an online scan shortly.

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Programs and Features
  • Click (highlight) the following items:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 4
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
------------------------------------------------------

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with HijackThis.

While Spybot's TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
------------------------------------------------------

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on Do a System Scan Only. Check the following entries if they still exist: (Make sure you do not miss any)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [?????????] ??????????????e

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. If you use dial-up for the internet, skip this step and let me know.

In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser via a right-click using the Run as Administrator command.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

Kaspersky report
new HijackThis log

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hi again,

I have completed both the Kaspersky scan and the Hijack This scan, and the results are below. The Kaspersky scan stated that no malware was detected - so presumably when CCleaner deleted extraneous files and removed the symlcsv.exe file, it cleared the files identified as a worm.

I did use Hijack this to remove the O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [?????????] ??????????????e but it appears to still be there?

Thanks again,

Craig

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Try this:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"?????????"=-
Save the file as delete.reg and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Right-click delete.reg using the Run as Administrator command and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

------------------------------------------------------

Right-click HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Hi,

Please find the HijackThis report below. I disabled the antivirus before scanning, as previously.

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hello again Craig. Are you familiar with the 3rd and 4th entries under that registry key listed in the log you posted?

Are they part of some software you installed? Please let us know.

------------------------------------------------------

Also, please attach the log produced by peek.bat in your next reply.

If you don't have the log, produce another by following the steps in my previous post for creating and running peek.bat

To attach a file, simply
  • Click the Manage Attachments button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  • Copy and Paste the following into the Upload File from your Computer box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  • Click Upload.

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hi chemist,

I'm afraid I don't recognise the two items listed under the registry key - as far as I know they are not part of any software I have installed.

I have run the peek.bat again, and attach the log it produced.

Thanks again,

Craig

Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hello Craig. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Sorry, but I forgot to answer your original question. The file symlcsv1.exe is related to your Symantec antivirus program.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

Delete dss.exe from your desktop.

Delete the following Folder if it still exists:

C:\Deckard

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster 4.1 prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • SpywareGuard catches and blocks spyware installation and browser hijacking in real-time. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Re: symlcsv1.exe IM-Worm.Win32.Pykse.l

Hi chemist

Thanks very much indeed! All your help has been truly appreciated, and I will set up anti-spyware protection as you have recommended. My apologies for the delay in responding - I have been moving house, but am now all set up and online again.

All the very best, and thanks again,

Craig
