I have acquired some malware.

It makes my screensaver have beetles.

It changed my wallpaper to say basically "you should update your antivirus program".

And finally, every half-hour or so, a window will pop up that says:

Malware Alert!

Warning!

Attention! Adware.W32.SpyShredder spyware detected. Adware.W32.SpyShredder provides REMOTE ACCESS to your PC and can STEAL your CREDIT CARD, passwords and other private data. Also it prompts fraud advertising popup windows. This process is a security HIGH-risk and recommended to be killed

So far, I have clicked no every time.

I have gone through the steps here. I ran DSS before I ran Panda, hope that doesn't cause a problem. I have attached the panda and extra.txt files, and here is the main.txt text.

This will require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
   
2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

I was following the combofix guidelines, and I was confused at one point.

I moved the windowsXP Recovery Console download onto Combofix. When I did so, it seemed like it was starting to run. Specifically, the DOS-looking screen that says "Please Wait. Combofix is preparing to run." comes on,

And then a disclaimer page.

I wasn't sure if I should go ahead at that point or not...

As I was going to do the Kaspersky, it said I needed Java 1.5 to run it. I downloaded the install pack from the link that the Kaspersky program sent me to. Can I install it? I assume it's from the Java folks (Sun?).

Ok, done. Decided to just install/update my Java. Hope that doesn't cause problems.

Attached please find the 3 logs requested. Since I ran Combofix, I haven't had either the pop-ups, nor the beetles eating my computer screensaver issue. I will change my desktop image, and then reboot to see if it stays as it was.

Yes, you did want to install Sun Java . It's much more secure than Microsoft java.

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) If you do not see the icon, look to your left and click 'Switch to Classic View'.

• On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
• Next, click on the Delete Files button
• There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  • Applications and Applets
    Trace and Log Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

The remaining items are backups created during the course of this fix. If there aren't any more problems, we'll take care of that now.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 4.0 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

• It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.


Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Ok, I did the little Java thing.

And I went and deleted everything in my Thunderbird sent, trash, and inboxes; from the front end. But it doesn't seem like the right profile name. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them otherwise?

I have Trend Micro PC-Cillin 14 as my AV (as you probably know by now). Will the above 3 programs you mention work with PC-Cillin, and not cause conflicts? (McAfee Site Advisor, SpyBlaster, IESpyad Zoned Out). Speaking of IESpyad, the installation instructions were sort of confusing. And I don't use IE almost ever, I am mostly a Firefox guy.

Yes, all those programs will work with TrendMicro. None of them are 'real-time' scanners. You install them, and they do their prevention work behind the scenes.

If you rarely use IE, then it's up to you whether or not you want to install IESpyAd Zoned Out. If you wish to try, it does seem a bit confusing at first, but if you follow the Article instructions as you go, it makes more sense.
