POP-UP virus having problems removing

Have been trying to get rid of pop up ads for the past 6 days.
ran various scans (microsoft Windows Live Safety Center , spybot -says its cleaned but it shows up again, cc cleaner) nothing seams to find them. Thought at one time it was fixed - no pop-ups for over an hour then it came back again. Vundo showed up and trojan dropper:win32/agent.um
getting pop up to http://89.188.16.28 debtassure.com and other sites.
I ran your 5 steps and here is the final output.
Waiting to hear what needs to be done next.
First time post. Hope I did this right.
Thanks in advance for your help with this matter.

==========

P2P

P2P - I see you have P2P software µTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are Here,
Here and Here.

===========

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 5 installed

============

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with all the required logs

==========

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

========

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

FYI !! I ran task manager and found a file flagged as AXKROEWN.dll and was put into a quarantine file. Since then no more pop-ups. AVG free today said that the vundo trojan was there- Did not catch where as it was 5am and I was really tired. 55 files showed up in virus vault. there is an open option but I'm afraid to open it. Also a delete option. What would be the best stratagy to delete ? I was thinking delete the delete the recovery bin.

So I ran SDFIX and Combofix and here are the results. Looks clean to me but you are the expert. I also took your advice on Javascript and torrent.

According to the user manual there are four options:

.Restore - removes the infected file back to its original location on your disk
· Delete - removes the infected file from the Virus Vault completely
· Rescan - double-checks the suspected file to make sure it is really infected
· Send to analysis - sends the suspected file for deep analysis to the AVG

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Good job Anna

==========

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

==========
Please go to: VirusTotal
  • In the middle of the page you'll find a "Browse" button.

    Click the "Browse" button and browse to this file in RED:

    C:\WINDOWS\iun6002ev.exe

  • Click "Open".
  • Then click the "Send File" button at the bottom of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Do the same with this file:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TMP0000008C22B43A646E2CBA31

Note: The file starts with TMP000

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Bruce
I think I have good news but I won't be over joyed until you confirm that all is OK.
I re-ran catchme.exe that showed the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TMP0000008C22B43A646E2CBA31
I wonder if I had some file open at that time.

Here is the log from catchme

I'm running hijackThis now. I'll post results when completed.

Bruce,
Sorry - I mis-typed. Too excited I guess. I re-reran catchme.exe again and there is NO temp file and no hidden files. Please see the catchme.exe log file above.

I may have pre-maturely re-ran hijackthis.

Most likely it has been deleted as it was a temp file.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Guid mornin TheBruce in Edinburgh,
I figured I'd get a History Lesson today to find out where your home town of Důn Čideann,Scotland was on Google Earth but I couldn't find "you" there. I also checked out google images of Edinburgh. Thought I recognized you in one of the images. I found your picture there (same one here). So do you live in one of the many castles in Edinburgh or near one? Looks like you live in a wonderful area.
During my travels on the net. I've been having a few quirkey things going on. IE popping up occasionally with a blank screen. Are these issues with the virus or something else?
Well your probably waking up and I'm just going to sleep. I'll check this out in the morning. Guid eenin

I live in the castle which overlooks Princes Street , you might be able to see my rather large house Here or Here

Fort Lauderdale looks like a nice place to live, being a tourist destination and not forgetting the beaches and weather you have.

So IE somtimes displays a blank (white)screen or are these pop ups when you are using IE.

Please Download and unzip RootKitRevealer to your desktop

1. Double-click on Rootkitrevealer.exe and then click on agree.
2. Click on the Scan button.

RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.

3. The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.

4. Once the scan has finished, click on the File at top left and then on save

5. Save txt file to you desktop and post the log in your next reply.

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Hi TheBruce
yes IE window pop-up was a blank white screen
When I went to turn off my computer last night( Reallly 2 am) I was getting msg
IE explorer.exe program not responding
At that time there were no IE windows open then another msg
MCI command handling window program not responding
I don't even use MCI

Today when I went to check out your pics of Edinburgh I got a pop-up to broadband to enter in my user and password which I did not. This was not the first time this happened. I've had this occur before can this be part of the virus as well. why would I get that. I was already on the net looking at your instructions?
Sorry to add more to this original problem. Here are the logs

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Hi THeBruce1
Not sure what I should download because I have XP with SP3 and that does not show up on the dropdown list. I found this
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...and-xpsp3.aspx which states if you have ie7 and xp3
If you go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out. Should I uninstall xp sp3 then load XP7
I don't think I want to install ie 7 if I will just have to uninstall again because of sp3 unless MAYBE I unstall xp3 first.
what is your suggestion? Just want to be sure at this point before I do anything which might just make this more complicated.
Thanks
Anna

Re: POP-UP virus having problems removing

Sorry I did not know I could pick that one.
I loaded IE7. On shutdown I got an error : end of program extraction files - this program is not responding. Then it logged me out and re-started. I logged out again and did not get the msg a second time.

I went out on the web a while and so far all looks great. Let me know if you think its now all cleaned up.

here is the log.

Useful Information and Programs to keep you safe.

TrendProtect is a FREE browser plug-in that helps you avoid Web pages with unwanted content and hidden threats. TrendProtect rates the current page and pages listed in Google, MSN, and Yahoo search results. You can use the rating to decide if you want to visit or avoid a given Web page. To rate Web pages, TrendProtect refers to an extensive database that covers the following information for billions of Web pages:

* Content category
* Phishing scam detection
* Site reputation
* Page reputation

WOT Free helps you avoid disingenuous Internet content by allowing you to learn from others' experiences. WOT shows you website reputations on your browser, telling you how much other users trust a website. This helps you make better decisions while browsing and avoid phishing, malware, and other types of fraud. Reputations can also be added to web search results, Gmail, Wikipedia, and other selected sites.

WOT reputations are computed mainly from user testimonies. Sharing your knowledge with others is just a click away, without ever having to leave the site. We also collect data from hundreds of other sources (including PhishTank) to quickly warn you of emerging threats. Currently, WOT knows over 12 million websites.

Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

If your having trouble downloading & extracting,see link below for guidance:
