[SOLVED] Suspected "vundo" problem

Hi to all at the TSF, I throw myself at your mercy!

I have developed a bit of a horrible problem with my PC and decided to search for some help, which led to me being brought here by google. After having a quick browse, I was really impressed at the service you guys are offering! If anything, you guys are the ones who seemingly should be getting paid, rather than these cowboys who will take your PC away and then (claim to have) spend hours trying to fix it, only to have fresh installed your Windows rather than repairing the problem!! (Sorry, that example got a bit specific- not something I've personally suffered though!)

Anyway, I have babbled long enough! I'm normally able to get on top of any problems I develop with a couple of sweeps with different security programs I have installed- this one just wont go away though. I really don't know what it is that triggered it off and I don't know what other effects I'm suffering besides the performance related issues- but I would like to get it resolved!!!

Super Anti Spyware, AVG and Spybot all pick up this vundo thing and locate the same entries/files etc, and though they claim to have healed/deleted them, the problem just comes back. As best I can tell, there's possibly something located in a (hidden) Temporary Internet Files folder, although I haven't got the exact path. Also, Spybot keeps picking up persistent attempts for a 'Browser Helper Object' to do something- which I keep denying- and it also appears that a number of randomly named files are being created in my system32 folder. These files are DLL and they also seem to trigger a process called rundll32.exe. I've tried to kill these processes and used the cmd to delete the offending files- but new ones then just get created instead. When Spybot starts picking them up and I deny them, it seems to alternate- first the Browser Helper Object, then the DLL- but no matter how many times I deny the change, it just keeps coming straight back up with the other one. Around the same time, my Firefox had suddenly refused to load facebook, but was still loading other pages. I think that's about as descriptive as I can be. Oh, and I believe a couple of registry keys get picked up by a spyware scan too.

I tried to do your five steps and I've done pretty much everything- however, the Panda Security checker did not want to install properly and though it did in the end, it didn't scan. It stayed on the scan screen for about two seconds, then a pop up appeared saying I was not infected followed by a paragraph which included the phrase 'no protection was found'. I can't remember the full sentence but it's almost like 'protection' was a typo that was meant to say 'infection', based on the context of the sentence. If that makes any sense whatsoever....

As it stands at this exact moment, I'm not being bothered by Spybot but that will inevitably start again at some point. There is one instance of rundll32.exe running.

My main.txt follows:

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable Teatimer
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Hi Katana,

Many thanks for your swift response.

As requested, the logs you mentioned are attached. (I had to change the file extension of the hijackthis log to .txt as it wouldn't upload with the .log default.)

Regards :)

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
  • A window will open asking you to ensure you are connected to the internet, this is so a file can be submitted for analysis.
  • Click OK and follow the instructions to submit the file.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Here are the VirusTotal results:

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/3...238c3ac75b3110

Something to do with the Panda Security software???

I've also attached the new combofix log and hijackthis uninstall list. I've not included the Kapersky results yet because at the time of posting it's seven hours into the scan with 53% completed.... This seems to be because it takes an aeon to scan a rar file and I have a fair few of those lying about. I didn't want you to think I wasn't dealing with things as soon as I'd received a reply from you though and decided to post these bits to be getting on with.

I shall edit this post with the Kapersky log once it is done, which I pray will be within the next few hours!!!

Also, I forgot to answer the other part of your query- the computer is running fine. All my security apps are still turned off as I've not been told to turn anything back on (since I was last told I should turn them off!!) so I've not been getting bothered with any Spybot alerts. I just checked my processes and I don't currently appear to have a rundll32 going, which can only be a good sign!

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Right, Kapersky is done at last!

When I downloaded the updates, there was no 'Next' button as per the instructions. Also, I could find no mention of the adjustments you advised in the settings. I ran a scan on the whole computer though and while it didn't appear to give me a log file, it gave me the option to save the results as an html file, which I've just attempted to attach- but it's telling me it's an invalid file. I'm going to zip it and see if I can attach it then, but do tell me if I've got it all wrong! I've left the window that Kapersky ran in open, just in case I need to do anything else with it.

*EDIT*

Just went over the instructions and can see I should have saved as a .txt file. Have made the appropriate change.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

That looks fine

The only thing I am curious about are the Pro.Evolution.Soccer zip files. An EICAR-Test-File is a file that is designed to test antivirus programs, why would it be in those zip folders ?

Do you know anything about them ?

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 6 allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check for any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please post a fresh HJT log along with any info you have on the Pro.Evolution.Soccer zip files

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

I just did a search for 'Pro Evolution' and all it turned up were some mobile phone games I was given a while back. I've never used them and all they've done is sit there but they're so small that I decided to keep them. I did have a demo of the PC version of one of the Pro Evolution Soccer games but I'm certain that's been deleted. Besides that, I don't know anything else about them. They can be deleted if they are being problematic!

I have removed and installed Java as requested.

When I ran HijackThis, I got an error which I have painstakingly reproduced here!!:

Error Details:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modRegistry_IniGetString(sFile=system.ini, sSection=boot, sValue=Shell)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 8.0.6001.17184
HijackThis version: 2.0.2

I only included this in case it may have affected any results. The program did eventually give me a result and log though, which I've included as requested.

Currently have one rundll32.exe running, performance has been a little erratic- the most basic of functions have been very sluggish at times.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Fix With HJT

Close all other windows and then start HiJack This
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines IF still present
Quote:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSys2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe
- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
Now click Fix checked
Click yes to any prompts
Close HijackThis

Please post a fresh HJT log along with details of how things are running after the above fix

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Okay,

Well things certainly seem more stable now than they have been. After I did the last set of steps, I still had a rundll32.exe running- which I ended. It hasn't returned as of yet. I ran a Spybot scan and that came back as clean, but AVG has been picking stuff up. I've run a couple of detailed system scans today and a couple of trojans were detected in items that have never shown up as infected before, and I've healed those. I also deleted the Pro Evolution stuff. There were some items located in a hidden folder called E:/RECYCLER which I can only presume were something to do with the Recycle Bin from an installation I previously had on that drive. I deleted all those files and the folder. Overall, system is running better- but not perfectly. I am attaching the latest hijack log as requested.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Sorry for the delay, I didn't get notified of your response.

Let's have a last couple of scans to make sure

Please Download GMER to your desktop

Please create a folder in the Program Files folder called GMER.

Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder you have just made.

Run the Gmer.exe program by double-clicking the executable file gmer.exe.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.

If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and also paste them back in your next reply.

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

Delete the copy of ComboFix.exe that you have, and download the updated version

ComboFix.exe 1
ComboFix.exe 2
ComboFix.exe 3

Please re-run ComboFix and post the log.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Those logs are fine, what was AVG picking up ?
How are things now, is the machine running OK ?

FYI, Lots of programs can use rundll32.exe, so it doesn't automatically mean it is malware if you see it running.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

File name: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{42A596F2-34FD49CE-AAA
Malware name: Win32:Trojan-gen {Other}
Malware type: Virus/Worm
VPS version: 080619-0, 19/06/2008

is what just came up in Avast (which I have just moved to since SuperAntiSpyware wouldn't update properly- wise move?). Whether it's the exact same file that keeps coming up, I don't know- but it's always in that location I believe.

Everything else is fine to be honest. The reason I mentioned the rundll32.exe is because I don't normally see it running and it's always there until I kill the process. The only other issue is that on boot, it is taking a beyond reasonable amount of time for everything to load up.

Things are certainly improved, no doubt!! But I'm not sure I'm fully fixed yet...

And as I was writing this I got an error from Avast (after telling it to move that file to the chest):

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

That's not a problem, we will be clearing system restore in a moment.
Avast is a fine choice
Most scanners have trouble removing things from restore points, as they are locked from access.

As for the boot time, I recommend you look at Winpatrol ( there is a link in the "Prevention" section of this post.)

Congratulations your logs look clean

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.

Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

AntiSpyware
  • AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
    • It includes host protection and registry protection
    • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
  • MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
  • a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
  • superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

Prevention
  • These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
  • Winpatrol
    • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
    • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
    • Allows delayed startup
    • A must have addition
  • SpywareBlaster 4.0
    • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
  • SpywareGuard 2.2
    • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
    • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
  • ZonedOut
    • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
  • MVPS HOSTS
    • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
    • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
    • Not required if you are using other host file protections

Internet Browsers
  • Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
    • FireFox
      • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
      • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
    • Opera
      • Another popular alternative
    • Netscape
      • Another popular alternative
      • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
  • Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
  • ATF Cleaner
    • Free and very simple to use
  • CCleaner
    • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to give it some time to see how things were going.

As a general rule, everything seems okay now. There's nothing being detected by my scans anymore and I'm fairly confident I'm malware free now. My system startup is still taking it's sweet time (at least one minute for everything to have loaded up) but I guess I'm going to have to live with that.

Thanks for all your time and help- I'll be sure to spread the word about this excellent site!

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

Why not try Winpatrol It is an excellent startup manager.

Install Winpatrol, and when running click on the Startup Programs tab
The following items can safely be disabled.

[CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE
[CTxfiHlp] CTXFIHLP.EXE
[DiskeeperSystray] "C:\Program Files\Diskeeper Corporation\Diskeeper\DkIcon.exe"
[Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
[NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
[nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
[NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
[RTHDCPL] RTHDCPL.EXE
[Sony Ericsson PC Suite] "C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Mobile2\Application Launcher\Application Launcher.exe" /startoptions
[QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
[NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
[iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
[SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"
[ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
[msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
[WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

Just click on each item and then click Disable
(if the program is running, Winpatrol will ask if you wish to stop it)

Reboot your computer and see if that has helped the boot time.

Re: Suspected "vundo" problem

I certainly never realised I was actually able to turn those processes off. I've always been curious about what they actually do, but didn't want to risk stopping anything critical! I just rebooted and it seemed like everything started quicker (avast, avg, winpatrol- which I had already installed as per the first time you mentioned it) but it seems to be the wireless which is taking ages to kick in. Until that's loaded, things seem quite sluggish and anything I may try and do (open an explorer window, start firefox) don't seem to want to kick in until the last of my systray icons are open.

I can live with that though I guess. So I suppose that means I'm sorted now!!! :D
