[SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

Hi. This is my first post here. My computer has been acting strangely (It keeps telling me to re-install Performance Center, is incredibly slow, and some programs like Photoshop barely work.), and I had heard good things about you guys, I browsed around and saw where someone had mentioned the HJT.

I scanned my computer, and the results are below. I hope someone can help.

Edit: It just occurred to me that I should tell you what system I'm using. I'm using Windows XP (Media). Thanks all, hope to here from someone soon.

~Ru

Re: Help please? HJT Log.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the late response. The forum is very busy.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Re: [SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

Hi,

I see that you are using LimeWire, which is a p2p file sharing program. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Also by default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft.
I recommend very strongly that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

You may also wish to also uninstall Viewpoint. It is not malware but described as 'foistware'. It gets installed by AIM and you are not told about it. It can contribute to installation of adware programs.

If you update AIM this program will be installed again. Just uninstall it again.

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove, if present:

Amateur,

My comp is running much smoother now, it's still not running as fast as it should, and the internet still has a tendency to freeze or stop loading, but over all...I've seen a good deal of improvement. Thanks so much.

Re: [SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

This toolbar, prodegetoolbar663 by VMN, has been classified as 'Open to debate'. Dr.WebCurit flagged it as adware. You can read more about it here:

http://toolbar.vmn.net/en/privacy.php

If it's not something that you must have, you might consider fixing it with the HijackThis like you've done before.

O2 - BHO: Marty Casey Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-BEDC-CC39F0D3F960} - C:\PROGRA~1\PRODEG~1\PRODEG~1.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Marty Casey Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-BEDC-CC39F0D3F960} - C:\Program Files\prodegetoolbar663\prodegetoolbar663.dll .

Before we finish up, as your ISP is in Ukraine, I'd like to make sure the information is correct. Do you live in Ukraine?

Re: [SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

Hey, sorry for the late reply. I was out of town.

Could you explain how to remove the prodegetoolbar663 by VMN thing you mentioned? I suppose I'm being stupid, but I can't figure it out.

And...no, I live in the U.S. Why would it show that I lived in the Ukraine and how can I fix it?

Once again, thanks for all your help!

Re: [SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

Hi,

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

O2 - BHO: Marty Casey Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-BEDC-CC39F0D3F960} - C:\PROGRA~1\PRODEG~1\PRODEG~1.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Marty Casey Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-BEDC-CC39F0D3F960} - C:\PROGRA~1\PRODEG~1\PRODEG~1.DLL

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{76FAC0DA-7DE3-4025-82BE-DB4E30A41508}: NameServer = 85.255.116.53,85.255.112.116

Close all browsers and windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

========================================

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the please.

Re: [SOLVED] HJT and COmboFix Logs

Hi,

The log is clean.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

ATF Cleaner by Atribune is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here

For improving general performance and sluggishness, please read the sticky: PC running Slow.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!
