Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

You should be able to change the desktop background.

Go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
  • "Security Info"
  • "Warning Message"
  • "Security Desktop"
  • "Warning Homepage"
  • "Desktop Uninstall"
  • "Privacy Danger" or something similar
Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

I'll want to see a HijackThis log from the other account you say has this problem.

The crack found by Avira is quite possibly why the machine got infected.

Media Center is based on XP Pro. To change the Recovery Console to the proper version requires:

Deleting

C:\cmldr > file
C:\cmdcons > folder

Renaming

C:\boot.ini > C:\boot.ini.old

Renaming

C:\boot.bak > C:\boot.ini

Using this Recovery Console package (it's OK for SP3)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Repeat the installation process using ComboFix. When it gets to this part of the process:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Click on No.

A logfile will open. Post that in reply, and let me know how things are.

C:\cmldr and C:\cmdcons both deleted

Could not find C:\boot.ini and so I haven't done anything else

My desktop is back to normal.

The other account desktop still can't be changed back. The warning box is gone but the "desktop" tab is missing from the "display" window.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I posted this morning but the website became unavailable and this is my first chance back.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Note: Though I couldn't find boot.ini, when I tried to change boot. bak to boot.ini, it said the file already existed. When I perform a search, I only find C:\windows\pss\boot.ini.backup.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Performing a search for boot.ini, you'd need to adjust the search settings. Under More Advanced Options, tick "Search System Folders", "Search Hidden Files and Folders", and "Search Subfolders" as it's hidden by default.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

The file should be present in C:

Which account, please?

Run this batch file on the account in question.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
if exist C:\peek*.txt del /q C:\peek*.txt
if exist C:\look.txt del /q C:\look.txt
regedit /a C:\peek1.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
regedit /a C:\peek2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
regedit /a C:\peek3.txt "HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies"
type C:\peek*.txt > C:\look.txt
start notepad C:\look.txt
Save this as peek.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on peek.bat & allow it to run. A notepad file will open. Copy that information into your next reply, please.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Is it possible you did not copy the last line in the batch file?

Look on your C drive for C:\look.txt

If still no joy, run DSS on that account

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

There we go....

Run this regfix on that account

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-
"NoDispScrSavPage"=-

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may need to reboot, or at least log out and log back on.

You should now have a function display properties sheet.

Let me know...

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Thanks, everything now looks back to normal and I checked each account.

I did notice though, that when I log off, I get a window popup that says "end program - sprtcmd.exe." Can you tell me what that is?

I'd like to remove as much as possible of what I've accumulated during this fix. Esp since I'm sure some of it's redundant. Can you recommend if I should keep any of the following?
SmitFraudFix
Zoned Out
Ad-Aware
Ad Watch
AVG Free
DSS
HijackThis
IESpyAd
Spyware Blaster
ComboFix

Once again, thanks a million for your help.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

RE: sprtcmd.exe

C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exe

This is part of Dell's Support Center.

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/g...gen&redirect=1

Personally, I disable it from running at Windows Startup on my Dell machine. Right click the system tray icon >Dell Support Settings> de-select Run at Windows Startup

As to why you're getting that message, you may want to ask Dell. Perhaps it needs an update, and it's hanging when the machine is shutting down.

I'll be glad to answer those other questions, but first let's take care of a few more details as far as cleaning the machine goes.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log, and also let me know how things are now.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

While ESET ranAntiVir produced the warning message for C:Documents and Settings\NODF65tmp contains code of the Windows Virus W32/Polip.A"

Selected "deny access"

Here is the log file from ESET which also flagged a file. This looks like the .bmp of the annoying warning box or at least the background? The file name looks familiar from the Display window.

.
I hope that answers your questions.

The message you got from AntiVir would have been avoided had it been disabled while running the scan. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. AntiVir was alerting to file definitions being loaded by the online scanner, nothing more.

The only find by Eset scanner was in ComboFix quarantine, which will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Yes, you can uninstall HijackThis. This next step will uninstall ComboFix and some associated files and folders.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • Winpatrol

Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP//Vista. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Thank you. This is a lot to absorb and am still slowly working my way through it to make sure I understand it all and stay updated in the future. (Almost done).

As for AVG, I had only downloaded after I got infected but never installed. I think I was going to try multiple anti-virus softwares, one at a time, to see if one would clean it up but then thought better and hooked up with you guys. So, there is no AVG installed.

Thanks again.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Ah, ok...if it's just the installer file, no need to keep it around. By the time you might decide to try it, it mght be updated again.

I'd prefer Avira AntiVir over AVG these days, so I think you're in good shape.

Cheers, Happy Computing!

I'll leave this thread open for another day or two, to make sure you've got it all in hand.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Not sure if I should start a new thread though I wonder if my issue is related to everything we went through a couple weeks ago.

We've discovered on the other accounts on my computer that a couple of websites get us forwarded to a dell search page that says "Sorry, we couldn't find http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st%3Fad_type. Here are some related websites"

This happens when my husband tries to use is comcast.net mail and, I think, when my son tries to use his yahoo.com mail. I don't know what other sites they've had the issue with. I've tried their emails on my account with no issues.

I've been digging through the net looking for a solution and explanation and have been unsuccessful. I'm leery of doing much of anything because this problem is unique to their accounts. And I don't remember doing anything special with my settings...

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

After doing some quick research, it appears as though the application Google AFE may be responsible for the issue you're having.

Uninstall it, and let me know if the issue abates.

Re: Another Victim of Malware Protector

Uninstalling Google AFE seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks! Strange though that it wasn't affecting my account.
