Virutmonde Hangover?
Two days ago I picked up what I believe to be a virtumonde infection. Manifested itself by constantly adding BHOs and endless popups and redirecting on the internet. I ran Spyware Doctor and these problems stopped. However, now the computer is flakey when accessing the internet. Google search fails to produce results - it just hangs on white screen. I can search fine from MSN search site but basically dogpile, webcrawler, etc. don't work. I can go to my yahoo mail sign-in screen but again I can't get to my account - Screen hangs.
In my earlier frustration with Virutmonde, I ran Hijackthis and may have disabled some processes that is causing this behavior. Also have noted that my -System restore is not adding restore points. -Computer hangs when trying to boot in safe mode. Here is latest HijackThs logfile. Any help would be wonderful. Re: Virutmonde Hangover?
Hi scott_rob
Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. We also suggest that you Subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. You can do this simply by clicking the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread". IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER. ================= We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Please continue as follows:
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system: C:\ComboFix.txt New HijackThis log. |

Re: Virutmonde Hangover?
Thank you for responding to my post. I gave up the battle and reinstalled windows before I saw the post so for now everything is fine. Do you think Spyware Doctor will ve effective in preventing this from recurring? Again thanks for the help.

Re: Virutmonde Hangover?
Hi ya scott_rob
here is a list of measures and free software that will help in the future Limewire is installed on your computer. While Limewire is a clean P2P program, there's no guarantee that the files downloaded are. Please refrain from using it while cleaning your computer to prevent getting more infections. A list of clean and infected P2P programs can be found at Malware Removal and Spyware Info. The risks of using a P2P program are stated in this Sourceforge website and Information Week article. To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them: McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad. SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released. In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles: PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need? HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER **Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. ----------------------------------------------------- Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved. |
