Unable to Connect to Internet
Hi,
A couple a of weeks ago my computer became unable to connect to the internet after I turned it on one morning. I ran several scans for virus/adware/spyware using Norton, AVG Anti-Virus, and Ad-Aware. The results displayed nothing. I was able to renew my IP Address using "ipconfig/renew" in the command prompt but nothing changed. I can also ping out to any website I have tried. I tried using system restore and nothing happened. I tried re-installing my operating system and was met with "These Recovery CDs do not match your Compaq PC model." I did, however, receive these CDs with the pc. Finally, I tried installing Firefox, after getting the download from a friend's computer, and was met with the same problems. Here is my log (extra.txt is attached): Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68 Run by Compaq_Owner on 2008-06-06 05:40:40 Computer is in Normal Mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- System Restore -------------------------------------------------------------- Successfully created a Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point. -- Last 5 Restore Point(s) -- 58: 2008-06-06 10:40:46 UTC - RP490 - Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point 57: 2008-06-06 10:34:04 UTC - RP489 - Removed Windows Live Sign-in Assistant 56: 2008-06-06 10:22:06 UTC - RP488 - Removed Windows Live Messenger 55: 2008-05-20 08:34:06 UTC - RP487 - System Checkpoint 54: 2008-05-19 07:34:06 UTC - RP486 - System Checkpoint -- First Restore Point -- 1: 2008-02-21 05:43:14 UTC - RP433 - System Checkpoint Backed up registry hives. Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
Hello and Welcome to TSF.
Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription. Please save this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate. Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper. ------------------------------------------------------ Your connection problem could be more than malware related. If so, I can recommend expert advice in our other forums when you are clear of malware. ------------------------------------------------------ Uninstall Symantec Client Security via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. On another computer, download the Norton Removal Tool and Save it to your USB drive. Copy it to the desktop of the infected computer.
On another computer, download Combofix and Save it to your USB drive. There is one thing you need to do differently. This is important! When you download ComboFix, you must rename it before it is saved. Now, copy Combo-Fix.exe to the desktop of the infected computer. **Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop** ------------------------------------------------------ Close any open browsers. Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here ------------------------------------------------------ Double-click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall. ------------------------------------------------------ Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here. ------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: C:\ComboFix.txt new HijackThis log If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding. Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
After running the Norton Removal Tool I was able to connect to the internet through my default browser (firefox) as the "Reinstalling Norton after Removing Norton" page came up after restart. I didn't visit any other pages and simply closed out firefox.

Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
Hello again, Sliktor. Please tell us how your system is behaving.
------------------------------------------------------ Before we uninstalled Norton(Symantec), you had more than one antivirus installed and running and they were both outdated. Running more than one antivirus can cause system slowdowns or hangs. If they are outdated, they cannot protect you against new malware. [quote]AV: AVG 7.5.503 v7.5.503 (Grisoft) Outdated AVG is still outdated. Please update it. ------------------------------------------------------ Please delete this Folder if it still exists: C:\Program Files\Symantec ------------------------------------------------------ You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall HijackThis 1.99.1 in the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel and delete your current version. Please download HijackThis and Save it to your Desktop. Alternate link This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double-click on HijackThis.exe 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just click 'Do a system scan only'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit 'Scan'. Check the following entries if they still exist: (Make sure you do not miss any) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-CCB0-B130EEDBE97C} - (no file) O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: flammei - {9d635a36-6b3c-4146-8625-f3aaf507bbf8} - (no file) Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Please close HijackThis now. ------------------------------------------------------ Please download FixWareout and Save it to your Desktop. Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon.
Note: If you have Internet connection problems, find and double click the registry file dnsbak.reg located here: C:\fixwareout\dnsbak.reg and if you did, be sure to mention it to your helper. Once the desktop loads, a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved. Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt), in your next reply. ------------------------------------------------------ Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here. ------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: report.txt Kaspersky report new HijackThis log report on system behavior |

Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
When trying to run Kaspersky Online Scanner I get an error message. "Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program."
Not sure what to do. Edit: I've also noticed that Java doesn't seem to be working at all with my firefox or IE browsers. No pictures are being displayed. Last edited by Sliktor; 06-10-2008 at 11:57 PM. |

Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
Hello Sliktor. Sorry you are having trouble. Are you sure you installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6?
Kaspersky Online Scanner should work. Try it again. If it still won't work, do the following: Go here to run an online scannner from ESET. **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
Good job, Sliktor. Please remember to upgrade your AVG. It's free! See the link at the bottom.
Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky log, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore points, which we will be taking care of now. ------------------------------------------------------ Delete Fixwareout from your desktop. Delete the following Folder and Files if they still exist: C:\fixwareout C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMyWebS.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\nssEB.dll If any file resists deletion, please reboot into Safe Mode and try again. Please let me know if you have any trouble. ------------------------------------------------------ Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK combofix /uThis will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM It is imperative that you have an AntiVirus program running on your computer. Connecting to the internet without an AntiVirus program is an open invitation for infection. Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available: Select one of these, or another of your choice. Download, install, update definitions, and run a full system scan. Do not install more than one AntiVirus program as they will conflict with each other.FIREWALL Using a third-party Firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice: Do not install more than one Firewall program as they will conflict with each other.SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

Re: Unable to Connect to Internet
I've deleted the listed files, uninstalled combofix, re-enabled my anti-virus (AVG), and downloaded and installed Spyware Blaster 4.0.
Thank You Very Much for your assistance. You've been the more helpful than Microsoft's "Expert" Team. Thank You. |
