AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Hi,

I apparently downloaded something the other day which installed spyware onto my computer. I know some of the tricks for getting rid of it, but Im having no success. I have run Spybot, Symantec Anti-Virus, and Trojan Hunter in safe mode, then restarted. Also, there's nothing in my Add/Remove programs area. So far, no luck.

My issues:
1) Desktop screen is red with a message that says "Your Privacy Is In Danger"
2) When Windows starts, I get a message which says that there is an error in loading rhvjtbhd.dll
3) Pop-ups are constantly coming up and disappearing, including one advising me to download SystemDefender, and another advising me to download antispywaremaster.com. Also, there are a bunch of credit card pop ups.

Here's my HijackThis Log:

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

I think this is the Vundo / Virtumonde virus. Spybot finds Smitfraud-C, Virtumonde, Virtumonde.dll, and Zlob.downloader.vcd.

Trojan Hunter finds juzlfau.dat and generic.vundo.b.

I have tried running these over and over in safe mode, but they don't get rid of it. What should I do??

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

First, we need a set of logs from Deckard's System Scanner. It's more comprehensive than HijackThis:

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

One or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Thank you for your help on this. I had some trouble finding combofix to download - it kept pointing me to StopZilla. In any case, I figured it out, but then it ran without doing the Windows Recovery Console. It was already started, so it was too late to stop it. Worst case, if this is really bad, I'll just format my computer and start over. But, hopefully, it's ok!

I have posted the Combofix log and the resulting HijackThis log. I'm still getting some error messages and some spam internet windows opening! But some of the problem is fixed!

Let me know what the next step is. THank you again!!!

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

With an active infection such as this, it's best to act quickly. Keeps more infection from coming in.

Regarding the Windows Recovery Console:

Please do this:

Go to Microsoft's website. Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

From this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Click on No.

When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Next.............

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  2. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

    O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

    Close HijackThis now.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Elana\Application Data\TmpRecentIcons

    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  4. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  5. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.
  6. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  7. Go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
    • "Security Info"
    • "Warning Message"
    • "Security Desktop"
    • "Warning Homepage"
    • "Desktop Uninstall"
    • "Privacy Danger" or something similar
Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

  8. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Ok, thank you very much. I did everything as requested. There was one error message with Combofix that said it could not find the requested htm file, but all the parts mentioned in your instructions went fine. It restarted my computer, and opened an internet page to submit the file for analysis.

There were no desktops saved under Display-->Desktop-->Web.

I've attached all the requested files:

-ComboxFix log
-Final HijackThis log

Please let me know if I need to do something further... or is it gone?

Thanks!

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Looking better, still more work to do.

Please delete [4]-Submit_2008-05-21@22.17.zip from your desktop.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php...MjI6Ojg5&lid=2

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbehxcgl.dll

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. You may disconnect from the internet once you begin the scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

How is the machine behaving?

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Oh, I just meant that my virus programs are still finding viruses including MalWare and Vundo. And, InfoSeeker. There is nothing obviously wrong (i.e., no pop-ups, etc). Should I just run basic virus programs like Symantec? It hasn't been too effective at getting rid of Vundo, but now that everything else is clean, maybe it will be. Let me know what you think I should do. Do my logs look clean?

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Can you give specific locations of these finds?

It's quite possible that items are being discovered in quarantine.

Kaspersky shows some items still "loose", so we can delete them by doing this:

Open NOTEPAD.exe and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
Code:
@echo off
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt"

for %%g in (

"C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1844237615-776561741-725345543-1004\Dc2.zip"
"C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1844237615-776561741-725345543-1004\Dc3.zip"
"F:\Reinstall Files\freeripmp3.exe"

) do (
del /a/f %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)

for %%g in (

%systemdrive%\Deckard

) do (
rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt"
) else echo.Deleted Successfully !!

pause
del %0
Save this as fix.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on fix.bat & allow it to run

Post back to tell me what it says

Other than that, the rest of Kaspersky's finds are in Symantec quarantine, or System Restore points. We'll clear out the restore points shortly.

Yes, the logs look clean, other than that.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Ok, great. The Malware, Vundo, and Infoseeker did come up with Symantec as the Kaspersky was running, but you are probably right that it was just finding some stuff in quarantine. I just ran a Quick Scan for Symantec and it found nothing (it's a 1 minute scan, so it hardly ever finds anything!). I also ran Spybot, and it found it's typical stuff along with Virtumonde. But, Spybot always finds a few things which are not viruses - just adware.

I ran the fix.bat that you recommended (before doing the above), and it said "Deleted Successfully". Then disappeared.

Let me know next steps. Thanks again for all of your help.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

I'd be curious to see what Spybot is reporting. From what I see, the machine is clean.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run SpyBot check for problems, fix all red items, when its finished right click and choose copy results (not full report) to clipboard and paste that back here please.

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Ok. I did everything. I ran Spybot, and it found: AdRevolver, BurstMedia, CasaleMedia, DoubleClick, FastClick, MediaPlex, WebTrends Live, Zedo.

It did NOT find Vundo anymore. Yay! Let me know if there's anything particularly harmful about these (apparently, they are just cookies!)

I've attached the report from Spybot since it was too long to cut/paste.

Thanks!

Re: AntiSpywareMaster - HELP! :-)

Yes, just cookies.

Cookies are nothing to be worried about. They get installed on your computer everytime you visit any webpage. Now some of those are good cookies that get installed for ease of use for next time you visit the same page, but some cookies are spyware used for tracking users surfing habits.

Most of those cookies are third party cookies that can be blocked:

In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies

Click Exceptions, identify the site you want to block, and click on Block.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and click on Advanced in the Privacy tab

Now put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling"

Set first party cookies to Accept and third party cookies to Block

Also put a check to "Always allow session cookies" OK your way out.

This won't prevent all bad cookies from being installed, but will reduce the amount.

Also there is another program you can use.

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

You can read more about cookies at the Cookie Concept

You can tidy up with this tool:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
