Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

I have tried to remove the pop-ups on my laptop with various virus detectors/removers and nothing has worked. I've had this problem for a few months.

I have run PandaActivescan - the following is the export report.

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

Hello, judyf -

Looks like you stopped at Step 2.

It also looks like you have two AntiVirus applications installed, Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus 5.5.7.124 and Norton Internet Security 2007. While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Choose one to keep and uninstall the other.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall
If you choose to uninstall Norton:

Please use the instructions on this page to completely uninstall your Norton Products.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you've done that....

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

Good job, let's see about cleaning this machine.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

That looks much better. I should think the popups have stopped. Please let me know.

Optional:

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs) if they exist:

Coupon Printer for Windows

Here's why:

http://www.benedelman.org/news/031808-1.html

Please read the section labeled "Additional Violations: Coupons.com Retrieving Windows CD key and system serial numbers" and decide for yourself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. You may disconnect from the internet once you begin the scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is the machine behaving?

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

Hi Judy -

The only item found by Kaspersky is in System Restore, which we'll take care of shortly, by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • Winpatrol

Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

I have a problem when I get to the microsft update page. I cannot get the bar that displays the 'click here to install ActiveX'.
The first line of the page is:
Install the ActiveX control required to view the website

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

See if resetting IE6 to default settings helps.

http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-re...orer-6-to.html

If you use autoupdates, you'll not have to visit the microsoft site.

You may also want to upgrade to IE7. It's more secure than IE6.

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

I downloaded IE7 but I still cannot get the 'activex' to show up on the microsoft update page to install. I do have 'auto updates' for microsoft. Is there another way to install 'activex'? Is 'activex' necessary?

Still no pop-ups. :)

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

Yes, for some sites, you need ActiveX controls.

So, the information bar (yellow bar at the top of IE) does not appear at all?

I'll try another couple of things, if we can't straighten the IE ActiveX issue out, I'll send you over to our Internet Explorer forum. You're on auto update, so you'll be protected, but you should be able to visit the site and install the ActiveX and any available updates when you want to.

The malware portion of this should be done. I don't expect popups any more.

Reset IE7 to default settings:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213

Reset Settings in Internet Explorer 7

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/06/12/628499.aspx

If that doesn't help...try this, from within IE

# Select Tools, then Internet Options from the menu at the top of the Internet Explorer window. The Internet Options window will appear.
# Select Security from the list of tabs at the top of the Internet Options window. The Security tab will appear.
# Select the Custom Level button. The Security Settings window will appear.
# Scroll down to the Download signed ActiveX controls entry and select the prompt radio button.
# Scroll down to the Run ActiveX controls and plugins entry and select the enabled radio button.
# Select the OK button to accept the changes

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

"So, the information bar (yellow bar at the top of IE) does not appear at all?"
Correct - this bar was not appearing ever...it did in the past, months ago.

"Reset IE7 to default settings:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213"

I did this link and the ActiveX finally downloaded with all of the new Microsfot updates....wheh.

OK - now can I delete all of the text files I posted to my desktop?
Will 'GoodSearch' added at the top of my tool bar create virus/ware problems?
My Norton 'phishing' pretection isn't working, no I need to be worried since the IE7 has it?
Thanks!
Judy
- day 3 and no pop-ups!!!

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

One other question so I can add my complaint to the malware website. What type of virus did I have?

Re: Have pop-ups fp.pc-on-internet.com

Hi again

Glad to hear the ActiveX issue is solved.

You can delete any logs, tools, etc which still remain.

If Norton phishing protection isn't working, you may want to seek advice from their tech support, since you pay for their product. I'm not sure if IE7's phishing filter is as good as Norton's, but it's better than none. Seems you'd want a fully fuctional product if you've paid for a subscription, though.

GoodSearch Toolbar is listed as a legitimate toolbar in one of the databases we use and trust, so it should be fine to keep.

http://www.castlecops.com/tk29652-Go...DSE_1_DLL.html

You had Navipromo rootkit adware

http://www.f-secure.com/sw-desc/navipromo.shtml

That should hopefully answer your questions. Let me know.
