Confused Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Greetings. I am having difficulty working on the computer in question. Because it is infected with some types of malware, trojans etc., it keeps having popups appear and opening up IE to anti-virus websites making it very difficult to try to run programs to clean it up. Could someone please explain how I get info. off of that computer and onto my other laptop so that I can post to this site? I did manage to run HiJackthis & it created a logfile, but I don't want to infect my laptop by transferring the info onto this computer that I am using to post this. Also, the whole time the sick computer is on, it downloads stuff and pop up appear. Can I halt this by going into safe mode to work? THanks in advance. Man what a mother's day present...and infection.

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Hi Sandy -

We prefer a more comprehensive set of logs from Deckard's System Scanner, as outlined in this thread:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Good Day,
I can't get Deckard to finish running. I am not running in safe mode and it tells me it runs into problems and needs to close. :( What is next please since I cannot get this to work?

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

At what stage is DSS when it encounter problems?

To save you time, I will offer this workaround:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run Deckard's System Scanner once again, this time using these instructions (this assumes dss.exe is on the desktop):

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
On the left side, UnTick Temp CleanUp

On the right side, UnTick Event Logs

Click Scan!

When finished, it shall produce two logs for you. Post the logs in your next reply.

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

OK. THanks that worked. This is the computer that since I had lost all administrator privledges due to this virus, I had created a new log in that I thought could perform the test to rid this virus since I was planning on giving it administrator privledges. This new user is TEST. THe old administrator and primary account was Administrator but it only shows up in safe mode :(. This master plan did not work as I couldn't change privledges of TEST except for administrator.

I was so excited after doing the first step that I didn't notice the command line that you told me to enter on Deckard Log the first time. I just clicked it. After re-reading, I then followed the instructions to a T so I hope the log doesn't reflect anything unusual because of my error. That is why it is labeled main1. Please tell me where to proceed next.

THanks,
Sandy

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

That's a mess of Vundo you've got there...

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Question Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Thank you TETONBOB for getting back to me so quickly. I am returning with questions before I do anything that I am not sure of. First off, I began looking for my Windows CD that was mentioned on the instruction website. Of course, when you need something you can't find it quickly. Because there were options mentioned if you didn't find the CD, I opted to stop waisting time and just go that route.

Well, I have XPMedia Center Edition on this computer but I don't know if it is professional edition or personal edition. I am not sure how to find this out as there are 2 different directions depending on which edition I have. I did look under SYSTEM PROPERTIES on the computer but it just mentions: Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 1. I have pulled out all of the paperwork that came with the computer and it all just mentions XP Media Center edition(no classification from personal or professional)

So I am in a quandry and don't know if it really matters that much but I am sure it does. ANy clue on how I find out this info?

Anxious to proceed...
Sandy

Wink Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

After looking at my Deckards logs, I noticed it mentioned Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1 so I solved my mystery. Now I will proceed!

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Sandy -

XPMedia Center Edition is based on XP Pro, so use the package for XP Pro, Service Pack 1

Edit:

As shown in the extra.txt from DSS:

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

This link is for Floppy drive when no CD drive is useable. Is this recovery console possibly able to be downloaded to a CD instead? Is it a different link? I am struggling here.

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Hi Sandy....you're overthinking it. We use ComboFix to install the Recovery Console using that package. Don't worry about floppy/CD issues.

Download the file I've shown you the link for & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Once the Recovery Console is installed, you'll be presented with this image:

Click on Yes. Then follow the rest of the instructions.

Question Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

TETONBOB:
You were right! I tend to overanalyze when I am stressed.OK. I ran the Combo Fix program. Man, it did have alot of files to go thru. Possibly a new one everytime I received a pop up during the week while trying to fix? There was one day that the pop ups were appearing faster than I could delete them. The more I deleted, the more uploads I got. It is taking awhile for Combo Fix to prepare the log but I am trying to have patience. One question, all of this fixing was done on my newly created user "TEST" so when I finally figure out how to get the invisible ADMINISTRATOR log on back, (It only appears in safe mode now)will the virus be removed from that user also or will I have to do this for each user?

It has been about 10 minutes since the scan finished. THE computer re-booted and the C:|Find 3M Screen came up that says it is preparing the Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished. Some program started to open but I hurried and closed it. Does it usually take this long or did I mess something up by closing the HP program that starts on every reboot?

I still have the blue C:\ screen along with my desktop appearing with the same Preparing Log Report--but so far No log report??

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

Now there is a box also stating this: vfind.cfexe-no disk
THere is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR4.
Cancel Try Again Continue

Not sure which to choose?

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

OK. I got rid of the Vfind box and it finally printed a log which I have attached. I noticed I can still see all of my family's user Id's are still there somewhere. What's next?? I'm on a roll.

Re: Help with HJT log on computer that keeps opening up anti-virus websites..

If you get this again:

Quote:
Now there is a box also stating this: vfind.cfexe-no disk
THere is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR4.
Cancel Try Again Continue
Click on continue, and let me know. Just be patient, and relax a bit. Stress causes mistakes.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
  2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  3. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.
  5. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

OK. I finally am done with this step. In the end I was told to submit one of the files to be analyzed and that I should tell you.
