Deep spyware infections

Infected PC is an Acer Aspire 5050 notebook, running Win XP Home SP2. The desktop background image had been taken over by adware, claiming the system was infected and to 'click here' for solutions. There were also numerous popups claiming to be from Windows Security Center, asking to 'click here' to remove the infection (usually 180 solutions), and asking to 'update your Windows Spyware Security'. AVG 7.5 was installed, but updates could not be downloaded - something blocking access to the update server.

Before I found your very informative 5 steps to take prior to posting, I took some actions on my own and made a journal of what I did - here it is:
  • Disable all startup programs
  • Uninstall Spymaxx
  • Uninstall SpywareDestructor
  • Uninstall Shopper Reports
  • Uninstall Weather Studio Desktop/Toolbar
  • Download and install SuperAntiSpyware free addition - unable to update
  • Uninstall Zone Alarm firewall to allow updates to new programs
  • Update and run SuperAntiSpyware - system shuts down after 1-2 minutes into scan
  • Run online virus scan from Trend Micro Housecall - remove 72 infections
  • Uninstall AVG 7.5 (out of date)
  • Install AVG 8.0 Antivirus - unable to update database because of resident infections
  • Perform full system scan with AVG - results:

49 infections found and moved to Vault
0 infections not removed or healed
5 spyware found and moved to Vault
0 spyware not removed
174 warnings found (tracking cookies) and moved to Vault

Empty Vault (delete all infections) and re-start system
  • Turn off System Restore
  • Start system in Safe Mode
  • Run SmitFraudFix.exe
  • Re-start system in Safe Mode
  • Scan system with SuperAntiSpyware - 376 threats detected
  • Update AVG 8.0 manually and scan system - 11 warnings (cookies) and 1 spyware cleaned
  • Uninstall LimeWire P2P file sharing program
  • Download and run Deckard System Scanner - log files created for submission to Tech Support Forum
  • Run online scan with Panda - 13 malware and 9 suspects found - log file created for submission to TSS

I feel I have made some progress (no more pop-ups and normal desktop), but some problems still exist: I still cannot update AVG 8.0 unless I do it manually; when opening My Computer, the window populates very, very slowly, (and the common tasks sidebar disappears), then finally reveals the various drives, etc; when I insert media, such as a memory stick, the autoplay dialog does not open, forcing me to go to My Computer and wait, so that I can access the new drive letter. Attempts to adjust autoplay through the drive letter properties failed.

Also (very important) I cannot get Windows Updates - instead, I get the following persistent message: Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer: To continue: Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) - when I click Continue, I am taken back to the same screen.

My first HJT log (using Deckard's System Scanner) follows:

Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68

I have attached the Extra.txt from Deckard's System Scanner, and the log file from the online Panda scan.

Thank you so much in advance for your help in bringing this poor PC back to good health. I will install SpywareBlaster when it is clean.

Thank you -

Re: Deep spyware infections

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the late response. The fourm is very busy. We'll begin with Combofix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: Deep spyware infections

Hi,

Looking much better but we have some more work to do.

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

Before we continue, you don't have Window's Recovery Console installed. Though it may not be needed at this time, current infections tend to patch a lot of critical system files now, these often result in multiple problems and sometimes, they can cause unbootable machines. Having Window's Recovery Console installed on your machine will help you and I in case something goes wrong while we are in the process of cleaning your machine.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt .

Re: Deep spyware infections

Hi Kermit,

Quote:
Settings\GINGER\Desktop\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
XP Media Center is based on XP Pro. You have chosen to install the recovery console for the Home edition. You'll need to delete the one installed and install the correct one.

To remove the RC installed by CF, please delete the following files/folders:

C:\CMDCONS
C:\\cmldr

Do next step ONLY IF C:\boot.bak exist

Delete - C:\boot.ini
Rename - C:\boot.bak ---> to ---> C:\boot.ini

Next,

* download new setup package from MS (for XP Pro SP2)
* Drag it into CF
* Post the new log

Re: Deep spyware infections

Deleted the folder and file you specified. I found C:\boot.bak but could not find C:\boot.ini to delete it, and was unable to rename C:\boot.bak to C:\boot.ini, because it 'already exists' - the computer is set to show hidden files.

Went back to M$ support and downloaded the setup package for XP Pro SP2 and dragged it to ComboFix - here is the resulting log:

ComboFix 08-05-15.3 - GINGER 2008-05-18 23:19:55.3 - FAT32x86

Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\GINGER\Desktop\ComboFix.exe

Re: Deep spyware infections

Hi Kermit2,

Well done.

I see some leftovers from AVG7 and Symantec in the logs. I'm going to include them in the fix.
Please delete SmitFraudFix from your desktop.

=====================================
  • Open notepad (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad )
  • Copy the entire contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as CFScript.txt
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
(It must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won't work):

Code:
File::
C:\FOUND.003
C:\WINDOWS\DUMP5f08.tmp

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6F45AEA2-9C81-4832-8390-7134102B8DE5}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ASDd]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\AVG7_CC]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ccApp]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WeatherDPA]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WeatherStudio Desktop]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ZangoOE]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ZangoSA]
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

===================================

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

=========================================

Please post back the Combofix.txt, Kaspersky report and a fresh HijackThis log. Also, let me know how the computer is running now.

You asked for a report on how the computer is running now - we have elimintated all the popup ads and warnings, recovered our normal desktop, and our normal IE7 home page. We are also now able to choose a different search provider.

A couple of serious problems still exist: 'My Computer' is still very slow (several minutes) to populate; also, the Network Connections folder is empty - we cannot work with any network connection (LAN, Wireless, etc.) We have gone to Services/Network Connections and restarted the service, to no avail. Perhaps you can help us with these things.

Thank you so much for your interest in solving our problems, and for all the help rendered so far.

That's good to hear. Your logs are clean.

Have a look in this Slow Computer page and see if any of their suggestions help.

This is beyond the scope of this forum which only deals with malware. However, I found this information. If you cannot still resolve the issue or would like assistance, I would advise you to ask for help at our Networking forum.

=====================================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

===================================

If you have no further malware issues, you're all set to go.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Re: Deep spyware infections

I am working on all of your suggestions, but before I make my final post, I want to clarify two problems that are significant to me:
  1. When I click on <My Computer> from the desktop or start menu, it takes several minutes to populate the contents.
  2. When I click on Network Connections from the start menu, the window is completely empty.
    1. When I insert removable media (memory stick or CD), there is no Autorun window and I must go to <My Computer> and wait, to open the media.

I will get back to you after I have done all the steps for general cleanup and defrag that you have given me - maybe that will help. I have already run SFC, but need to run Disc Error Checking before defrag - maybe that will help.

Thank you so much for all you have done - stand by for my final report.

Re: Deep spyware infections

All tasks in your last post have been completed. I now have icons in the Networking folder (and in the notification area), thanks to the M$ KB you sent me to - registering some .dll files did the trick.

The <My Computer> folder still loads very slowly from the start menu, so I did a work around by making a 'clone' folder on the desktop containing shortcuts to all the drive letters - works just fine. I need that because I do not get the <Autoplay> dialog when I insert any type of removable media - is there a fix for that? I tried making adjustments on the Autoplay tab for each removable drive, but could not make any changes there -all the little sample windows were blank. How can I switch it back on?

I am now able to get Windows Updates, but I will pass on SP-3 for a while.

I am including a new HJT log for you just in case:

Thank you for all your help over the last few days. Aside from the My Computer folder loading very slowly, all other issues have been resolved, and I can't thank you enough. We can close this thread now.

Deeply thankful -

You are very welcome. Glad we could help. For the slow loading My Computer issue I would suggest that you visit our XP forum. However, take a look here and see if this sheds any light.

Stay safe!
