Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Hi there, I am having trouble with my computer and would like some help. We have been getting random pop ups for spyware removal programs and there is a little yellow triangle that keeps showing up in the task bar. When I click on the triangle, it takes me to a website that tries to sell spyware removal. Last night my task manager was locked out by the administrator. There are several new icons on the desktop such as:Trojan.win32.blackbird.exe and others that were installed at the same time.

I have spyware blaster, spybot and adaware which have all been updated and run. I also use Avira antivirus (free version) that has been updated and run. Spybot found several critical objects including Virtumonde. Since running Spybot and Adaware, I am able to access the task manager, but I am still getting pop ups and the yellow triangle.

I have updated Windows. I tried downloading and running Deckards, but I get an error message each time. None of the malware shows up in my Add/Remove programs. I tried running Panda ActiveScan for several hours this afternoon but it always freezes at 23% so I gave up.

All I have is this HJT log. Thanks for any help!

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it’s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven’t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please follow the instructions in IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log and post the two text files, main.txt and extra.txt produced by the Deckard's System Scanner, as it has been a while since you posted

Thanks for your patience.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Hi and thanks for your reply. I have done lots of research since my original post so I have done a few things to the computer myself. It seems to be better but I am still getting alerts from Avira. I will be glad to give you a list of what I have done if you need it. Meanwhile, here is the Deckard's log you requested. I don't have any extra.txt minimized nor do I see anything in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder!

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Hi,

I see that you ran Malwarebytes' Anti Malware. Please post the MBAM log in your next reply so that we can get an idea what was going on. The log should be located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

=======================
Please disable teatimer and SuperAntispyware so that they will not interfere with the fixes.

While both Tea timer and SpyBot are closed
Right click here and click save link as
Save it as resetteatimer.bat to your desktop

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Double click on resetteatimer.bat and wait for it to finish
Since it will not be needed again delete ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Turn Tea timer back on again via SpyBots tools resident page when your computer is clean.

Note: If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

  • Click on Preferences
  • Click on the Hi-Jack Protection tab
  • Under Home Page Protection, uncheck "Protect Home Page from being changed. Changes can only be made here."
  • Click on Close.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

I am slowly making my way through your instructions but I have run into a little snag. I can't seem to remove some of the Java.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.2.4_01

All of the above give me the error message "Fatal error during installation"

I will await your response before proceeding further

Thanks for your help!

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Hi,

Try removing old Java instances with this utility:

Windows Installer Cleanup
To Install the program:-
  • Save the download to your desktop
  • When download is complete, double click msicuu2.exe to start the installation
  • Click Run, click Next, click I accept the licence agreement
  • Click Next and Next again
  • Click Finish.
The program is now installed.

To run the program:-
  • Click the Start button, point to All Programs
  • Point to and click Windows Install Cleanup
  • Scroll to the entry for removal and click to highlight it (which would be the Java entries in your case)
  • Click the Remove button
  • Click Exit

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

That appears to have done the trick. I will finish up with my homework and post the logs when I get done.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

I shut down Avira while Kaspersky was scanning so I will run it now and let you know. So far things seem to be running ok.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

OK. I hope you didn't surf the web after the Kaspersky scan while Avira was still shut down.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

No, the only time I've been on the internet is to click on one of your links. The rest of the time the connection has been disabled and I've been following your directions on my laptop.

Re: Help with trojan, possible Virtumonde

Excellent. If all is well now, you can go ahead and delete DSS.exe from your desktop and also delete its folder:

C:\Deckard

======================================

Disable and Enable System Restore If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. Because Windows regularly sets restorepoints, it's very possible that the malware, you have removed, is still present in the System Restore. If you put Windows back to such a restorepoint, this malware will be put back, as well.

This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.) Please do this ONLY ONCE, not on a regular basis.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.

4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

Reboot normally.

=======================================

You can re-enable all the security tools you've disabled earlier.

======================================

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

ATF Cleaner by Atribune is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here

If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!
