Unfortunately, I was not able to run the Panda Scan because the website would not allow me to log-in no matter how many times I signed up.

But, I did run the Deckard's Scan and a log is attached.

Among my problems are:

- typing is harder and characters take longer to show up my monitor
- computer behaving erratically (slow, freezing up)
- pop-ups while on the Internet
- desktop and Start taskbar disappear sporadically

The viruses found on my system by AVG:

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.

It appears you have two antivirus programs installed and no firewall enabled.

Having more than one antivirus program installed can lead to system instability or even system hangs. Since Panda AV is outdated, I would recommend uninstalling Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

To be sure no remnants remain, please download the Panda Titanium AV 2005 Uninstaller UNINST_v1012.exe and Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file. An MS-DOS window will open.
Press Y to start the removal process.
Restart the computer when asked.
Then delete UNINST_v1012.exe from your desktop.

For now enable your Windows Firewall via the Security Center in your Control Panel and when we are done I can suggest some good, free third-party firewalls.

I see you have P2P software ( Ares and BitTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Please post the HijackThis log in your next reply. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

While trying to install ComboFix, the Windows Recovery Console file I was instructed to download won't install when dragged on top of the ComboFix icon.

When I tried to download the Windows Recovery Console by itself (I don't have a Windows CD), a prompt said that I needed a six floppy disks.

I only need to know if I should still run ComboFix with this problem.

ComboFix starts when I drop the file, and from the tutorial, it's not supposed to. Its supposed to install the Microsoft stuff first.

Oh, and now my entire desktop has disappeared-- But I will try what you just said to do again.

As part of installing Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return. Once the Recovery Console is installed, you will get to this image:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and Save it to your Desktop.
Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
Click the Download button to the right.
Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
Click Continue
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs
Click (highlight) the following items:
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
- Java(TM) 6 Update 2
- Java(TM) 6 Update 3
- Java(TM) 6 Update 5
- Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and double-click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
- On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
- Next, click on the Delete Files button.
- There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  - Applications and Applets
  - Trace and Log Files
- Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
- Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
- Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT.
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  - Extended
- Scan Options:
  - Scan Archives
  - Scan Mail Bases
Click OK & have it scan My Computer.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect.
We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Most(if not all) infections have been quarantined.
Click the Save Report as... button.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Well, now my system is acting excellently-- no more disappearing desktop and taskbar, internet has sped up, and no more pop-ups from AVG telling me how many viruses it has spotted.

I wonder if I should delete the twenty-something viruses in my AVG Virus Vault? I wasn't sure, so I thought I should ask you. If I do delete them, will it mess something up? Anyway, here are my logs.

As long as they are in the vault, they can do no harm. The vault gets emptied periodically, but you can safely delete them.

As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky log, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore points, which we will be taking care of now.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

Go to Start>>Run>> and Copy/Paste the following single line command into the Run box and click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point.

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

FIREWALL
Using a third-party Firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one Firewall program as they will conflict with each other.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

SpywareBlaster 4.0 prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
SpywareGuard catches and blocks spyware installation and browser hijacking in real-time. See tutorial here
IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2 is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Only use the Immunize feature if you don't use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here

Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

When I tried to download the Windows Recovery Console by itself (I don't have a Windows CD), a prompt said that I needed a six floppy disks. I only need to know if I should still run ComboFix with this problem.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. (looks like a coffee cup) On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button. Next, click on the Delete Files button. There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked Applications and Applets Trace and Log Files Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window. Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to install an ActiveX component. The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files. Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT. Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: Extended Scan Options: Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases Click OK & have it scan My Computer. Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it. Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Most(if not all) infections have been quarantined. Click the Save Report as... button. Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply. Note To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review: Close any open programs. Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan. Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Infestation (pop-ups, slow system) Well, now my system is acting excellently-- no more disappearing desktop and taskbar, internet has sped up, and no more pop-ups from AVG telling me how many viruses it has spotted. I wonder if I should delete the twenty-something viruses in my AVG Virus Vault? I wasn't sure, so I thought I should ask you. If I do delete them, will it mess something up? Anyway, here are my logs.
