Evil Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Hi, thanks for helping. Here's what happened...
I tried to download a viewer to see a video clip - it never downloaded but then all hell broke loose.

1) McAfee started with the Generic Dropper.au
2) My background was some anti-virus software (privacy protector)
3) Pop ups for virus protection up the ying yang
4) Explorer Windows minimize and maximize without prompting
5) Task manager is disabled
6) Home page Ultimate Cleaner 2007 - even when I change it back, it goes back to Ultimate Cleaner

With DSS, I tried to have it access the internet after downloading but it was blocked. There is only the Main.TXT document. I also have the scan results document from the online tool.

I have attached the ActiveScan.TXT file results.

THANK YOU! Michael

DSS RESULTS:

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

It does not appear as though DSS was allowed to download and install HijackThis. To produce a HijackThis log for your next reply, please do this:

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Disconnect from the internet, and disable your protection applications once again. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Close HijackThis now.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Re-enable your protections...a reboot should have done this.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Thumbs Up Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

HI TETONBOB...

I could not connect to the internet and send the file. When COMBOFIX finished running, the screen was blank - no start button, no bar, no clock, no nothing - so I couldn't reconnect and send the file.

I did the combofix and hijackthis.

Thank you! Mike

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Ok, but now you have connection, or you're using another machine? Is the desktop back to normal?

This is twice now the directives have not been followed. Are you having difficulty disabling McAfee? Having the AV active while ComboFix is working can cause system issues, it's why we want it disabled.

What is the current status of the machine?

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

I'm really trying - I can't seem to shut down McAfee!

Can you help me figure it out? Do I just go to processes and shut down all McAfee?

I'm sorry - I appreciate your help I'm just not sure how to do it.

Mike

I think I shut everything down until a system restart. Mike

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Ok, Mike...McAfee is a bit of a pill to gain control of. Thanks for letting me know you're trying. What's more important for me to know right now is the current state of your machine.

Desktop normal? Internet OK?

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Thanks Bob....I thought I had McAfee licked...went in and disabled all services (I Thought....but no)

The desktop seems correct. I am no longer getting the virus software page as my background. I still cannot get the Comcast Tool bar to reappear. When I go back to VIEW/Toolbars it has Comcast grayed out.

The continuous pop ups are gone.

I don't see any more Trojan errors although I think I checked off something like 'do not show this error again'...

I'm a mess Bob - Sorry! I wish I were more help!

Mike

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

You're doing fine, Mike.

Somewhere on your desktop should be a file named similarly to this:

[4]-Submit_2008-03-31@22:48.zip

Please upload it here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/subm....php?channel=4

Let me know when you've done that, and we'll move on.

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Great. Thanks, Mike.

Please now delete the zip file from your desktop.

I'm not sure about the Comcast Toolbar issue, it may need to be reinstalled if it's something you use a lot. Let's make sure the system is clean first.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Hi Bob,
Welcome back to my nightmare! :)

I can't get Kaspersky to finish, it has gotten to 50 percent both times and hangs at about 80K records.

I will try again but it doesn't seem like it will work.

Thanks,

hangs at about 80K records.
Hi Mike -

Not exactly sure what that means....? Do the ActiveX control not install? Or does the scanner hang at some point?

Could once again be McAfee interfering if the latter....

MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

If still no joy, we have other options....

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

If that doesn't work.....

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file.
  • Click on Start, and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, we need to change the default settings.
  • In the Menu Bar, Go to Options>Change Settings.
  • Click on the Actions tab
  • Using the drop down menus, change each item under Objects, Infected Packages and Malware to Report, then click OK
  • Next, tick the Complete Scan radio button.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'No to All' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • After the scan has completed, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Ignore and close any windows which open, prompting you to buy DrWeb.
  • Post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Only one of the above need be performed.

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

That's just right, Mike...

Most of those items are locked away in quarantine, and we'll deal with them shortly.

Before we delete one item, I wonder if I could get you to upload it for me.

  • Please visit this site:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/subm....php?channel=4

  • In the Link to topic where this file was requested: area, copy and paste this

    http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/234016-generic-dropper-au-major-pop-ups-etc-post1406951.html

  • In the Browse to the file you want to submit: area, copy and paste this

    C:\Documents and Settings\ZacharyN\My Documents\picture50.com
  • Then click Send File.
  • Once it shows:
    Quote:
Your file was successfully submitted. Please let the user helping you know that you have submitted the file.
  • Close the site and continue with the steps below.

Open NOTEPAD.exe and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
Code:
@echo off
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt"

for %%g in (

"C:\Documents and Settings\MichaelN.THE-EA27A253A91\Desktop\[4]-Submit_2008-03-31@22.48.zip"
"C:\Documents and Settings\ZacharyN\My Documents\picture50.com"

) do (
del /a/f %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)

for %%g in (

%systemdrive%\Deckard

) do (
rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt"
) else echo.Deleted Successfully !!

pause
del %0
Save this as fix.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on fix.bat & allow it to run

Post back to tell me what it says

Also, I noticed this:

Quote:
Boot mode: Safe mode with network support
Your HijackThis log was taken from Safe Mode with Networking? Any reason why?

Thumbs Up Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Hi bob, the fix.bat file said deletion successful.

Also...each of those lasts Scanners - Kaspersky, etc died on a file in an old Microsoft Game called Zoo Tycoon. It was the only file in the directory which had been uninstalled. When I tried to delete it, it was locked and wouldn't let me do anything with it.

When I went to safe mode, I blew it away no problem...and the Kaspersky scan worked immediately.

I could be full of crap but it seemed to work! LOL

Thanks! Mike

Re: Generic Dropper.AU - Major Pop-Ups, etc

Ahh, good work! Actually, that's a nice solution, as we want the onboard AV disabled while running the online scan anyway. I recall that ZooTycoon issue from another thread a while back.

There were also a couple of trymedia games files I left alone. They get flagged as adware, but most people who use these games don't seem to mind.

The files are:

C:\Downloads\RollerCoasterTycoon2-dm[1].exe
C:\Downloads\tpwSetup-dm[1].exe

Delete them or keep them, your choice.

You can also uninstall HijackThis from Add/Remove programs and delete the backups when you do so. Delete the shortcut from desktop, and check to see this folder is gone:

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Other than that...........

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
