Vundo Trojan

Hi...

I have this trojan vundo affecting my computer. I have tried running
Mcafee
C Cleaner
Ad Aware

The Macafee On-Access Scan keeps giving me a message saying that my computer is affected by a Trojan
css4[1], css4[2] (and so on....it keeps generating one by one every hour) in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Maiya\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\(A random 8 digit string of alphabets).
Detected As : Vundo
Detected Type: Trojan
Status : Move Fail
Application: explorer.exe
First I downloaded Process Explorer, and scanned my computer using Mcafee by suspending explorer.exe, rundll32.exe and winlogon.exe. The scan didnt seem to detect any virus.

Later, I tried running VundoFix.exe. It gave a few .dll files in the location C:/Windows/System32 folder which I asked to remove. But this didnt seem to solve the problem. Mcafee On access scan again keeps giving me the same message every hour....detecting a new vundo trojan every hour in the Temporary Internet Files Folder. I was unable to delete this folder manually.

I have attached the extra.txt.
The content of main.txt is as follows -

Re: Vundo Trojan

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

We'll begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It's very simple to complete and will only take a few moments.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of all CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

Re: Vundo Trojan

Thanks a LOT for the reply, Iain. Im beginning to feel much better now :)

I ran Combofix.exe as well as dss.exe again and have got the log files for those. I am not sure why, but this time, the HijackThis log didnt produce any extra.txt file. I tried multiple times....but each time just the main.txt file was outputted. The two log files - main.txt and ComboFix.txt are ...

1. main.txt

One final thing....
Installing the Windows Recovery console (before installing the ComboFix) gave me yet another logfile - a very short one when compared to the previous two. I am not sure whether that is of any use....but this is what the log file said..

Re: Vundo Trojan

Hi again

The small log tells me that the Recovery Console was installed correctly.

After the Kaspersky scan we’ll download and install HijackThis – saves you running DSS each time.

How is your system running now?

P2P - I see you have P2P software (i.e. uTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgement on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. Although the P2P application itself may be 'clean', the files you download may well contain malware. P2P is often used as a method of distributing malware. This page will give you further information.

Online Scan
Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

A Welcome screen will appear - click 'Accept' at the bottom. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

HijackThis
Please download HijackThis. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the HijackThis log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis as many entries are harmless.
Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log as well.

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log.

Re: Vundo Trojan

Hi again

Looks good.

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqnomk - ssqnomk.dll (file missing)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

All your logs are clean. If there are no more problems we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure.

The following procedure will clear out the tools we've used as well as the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Referring to the image below

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware 2007

Download and install Ad-Aware 2007. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree

SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers

Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Maxthon

Firewalls

A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall for XP does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Comodo Personal Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm

Anti Virus Software

It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:
Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are three very good free Antivirus products which are available:
BitDefender Free
Avast!
AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Other Protection

Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

ERUNT & NTREGOPT
ERUNT is a programme that will create automatic backups of your Registry. These backups can be used to help restore your system in the event of a serious crash.
NTREGOPT will compact and optimise your Registry, to assist the smooth running of your system
