Softwarerefferal help please

Hi,

My computer appears to be infected by softwarerefferal. My brother in law has been using my computer and it appears he was on some dodgy sites. I think he has tried to clean himself but I'm not sure.

Whenever I load IE I get a ucleaner website as my homepage but it won't show as I get a stop error “access is denied”. If I try and change my homepage in IE it keeps changing back to softwarerefferal! I think there is some kind of bounce/forward happening from the softwarerefferal to this ucleaner.

I have Norton 360 and Superantispyware installed but neither seem to pick this thing up.

Frustrating as hell!

I have followed the 5 steps and post my log below and I really appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks
Jim

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php...MjI6Ojg5&lid=2
O21 - SSODL: altvxvm - {44A310E2-C271-4477-A2C8-560796BD2863} - C:\WINDOWS\altvxvm.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: bokpkov - {83F8B262-6321-4649-BA48-F16DA4361B38} - C:\WINDOWS\bokpkov.dll

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Post that log in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Looks better, Jim..a bit more work to do.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php...MjI6Ojg5&lid=2

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall previous version when you update, nor tell you that you should.

Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 5 alone, as it is the most recent.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is the machine behaving?

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

The machine itself is behaving fine. It's only when I go into IE that I notice a problem. Basically whatever you do to change the homepage it reverts back to this softwarereferral/ucleaner homepage.

I've seen no pop ups, nothing that looks supspicious either.

At the moment following the fixing of the RO - KKCU\Software\.... it has reverted the homepage to msn but if I was to try and change it to google for example I think it would revert back.

Anway I have followed your instructions and here is the current HijackThis log with the kaspersky log also.

Hi Jim -

Quote:
At the moment following the fixing of the RO - KKCU\Software\.... it has reverted the homepage to msn but if I was to try and change it to google for example I think it would revert back.
You should now be able to change your home page. Let me know if this is not the case.

The only items found by Kaspersky are in quarantine or System Restore, which we will address shortly.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Hi,

Afraid it's not the case. If I change from MSN to google it suddenly reverts back to the softwarereferral homepage straight away. Weird!

I can then run Hijackthis scan, fix that the line you mention and it seems ok. It puts MSN as the homepage. I then amend homepage to be google and it reverts back to softwarereferral one again. It's like a never ending circle!

Should I restart the computer after the Hijackthis scan and fix is complete?

Cheers
Jim

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Hi,

Just to add....This is the link which appears in the homepage in internet options

http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php...MjI6Ojg5&lid=2

and this is the link which it jumps to when you go to your homepage with an error message

IE cannot open the site http://ucleaner.com/main.php?wmid=60...o4OQ==&lndid=2

Access Denied

Thought it maybe helpful if I added these.

Cheers
Jim

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

This shouldn't be that hard...I see none of the usual registry protection applications installed which would be preventing this from "taking". The only thing close is remnants of Stopzilla siteguard, and it seems as though you uninstalled stopzilla.

You can delete these related folders:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\iS3
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\STOPzilla!
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SITEguard

Are you getting any registry change notifications from any application after performing the HijackThis fix?

Perhaps SUPERAntiSpyware has a real-time registry monitor...is your version the pro version?

Disable or exit SUPERAntiSpyware, usually via a right click on the system tray icon.

Norton360 also has a browser protection element, though I can't say as I know how that affects what we're trying to do, or how to change it. I don't speak Norton. Perhaps if you exit Norton while performing the fix.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php...MjI6Ojg5&lid=2

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go into your Internet Options and go to the Advanced tab. Down near the bottom, under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click on Reset.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

I think it has gone! I've just followed you last set of commands and no more reverting back to softwarereferral! I couldn't actually switch N360 off but I did everything else and it's appears to have stopped.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Hi Jim -

That's great to hear....I took a somewhat of a shotgun approach there at the end, so we'll not really know which element was holding it in place, but I hope that it's gone for good now.

With that in mind....

Delete this folder:

C:\SDFix (also delete SDFix.exe)

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Bad News I'm afraid. Computer has been off over the weekend. Switched it on today and it's back.

My homepage is softwarereferral again!

Therefore I haven't followed any of your last commands just incase we needed to do something else again.

I wonder if superantispyware is causing it. I switched it off for the last lot off commands but obviously after a reboot it came back on. Not sure why this would be the case, maybe possible, but I have that on my laptop with no problems.

So frustrating!

Cheers
Jim

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

I don't know what to tell you. Something is placing it back there, but there's no active infection.

Repeat all instructions from last post.

Run DSS once again, if you still have it. Otherwise download it again.

Edit -

In past cases where unexplained home page would not restore, it was Norton causing it.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

I know you've got Norton 360, so I'm not sure this will apply, but it shows a response to my edit above:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...7?OpenDocument

I don't use Norton products, so I can't advise you any better than that in this case.

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Yeah, sounds fishy to me now. For some strange reason Norton's now keeps telling me that transaction security is off and I cannot fix it.

I tried a couple of things from your previous post and it has gone away again for now. This included exiting superantispyware and running ATF cleaner and then doing hijack this scan fixing the software removal line gain.

As of yet it hasn't come back.

I will investigate the Norton's homepage protection.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Sounds like Norton is not your favourite, what do you recommend as the best solution for online protection?

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

Well, some people like and swear by Norton. I suppose it's a market leader for a reason, but I've never cared for it. It used to be labeled a resource hog, and I can attest to that, though according to many they've seen the light and changed their ways in the latest offering.

Some people like suites, because they are simpler to use/maintain. One app only.

The easy answer to your question, though...is one that's installed, active and up to date. After that, it's a matter of preference.

Personally, I use NOD32 by Eset for my antivirus. It's light and effective.

I also use a combination of the applications listed on our page here:

Re: Softwarerefferal help please

I don't believe this. I'm so sorry if I may have wasted your time.

I have just checked out N360 and there was no evidence of homepage protection in it anywhere.

I then had a look at superantispyware and wanted to cry when I saw the attached!

Ok so let just to follow this through. I just need to complete the removal of everything we used now.

Can I just remove from the desktop all of these?
Malwarebytes
Combofix
ATF Cleaner

Undo the windows recovery console
and then follow you previous instructions.

Cheers
Jim
