Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

I am getting popups on my computer when using Internet Explorer. My computer also is very slow. I know some of that has to do with it being old, but I think a lot of it has to do with spyware as well. I went through the 5 steps. Below is the main Deckards scan. I have attached the extra log, and also the Panda activescan as well. Thanks for any help.

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

Hi again, Jeff. So this is your machine? What do you and your sister do with these things?

Quote:
My computer also is very slow. I know some of that has to do with it being old,
True...some of that can be fixed if you want to continue using the machine to it's potential

Total Physical Memory: 128 MiB (512 MiB recommended).
This is a major concern for this machine. You really need to increase the amount of memory. 512 is minimum. Most modern applications like to have 1GB of RAM (memory) available. That may not be possible on a motherboard which supports a PIII

CPU 0: Intel Pentium III processor
We can't really change that, but one of my older PIII machines performs fine with 512MB of RAM

AV: AVG 7.5.503 v7.5.503 (Grisoft) Outdated
Was this a paid version which has now expired? Not having a current AntiVirus solution makes for a very risky internet experience. AVG also has free AV, as do several other vendors. Please let me know how you want to deal with that.

but I think a lot of it has to do with spyware as well.
True.

We can clean things up, but the machine will likely still be slow until you address the memory.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Well, my sister is young, so that is her excuse. As for me, I don't have an excuse. I got lazy, let my anti virus program expire and it was all downhill from there. Now I am just trying to get it back.

Do you have any links to where I could get memory? For a laptop, would I need to buy 512, or can I expand what I have up to 512? As you can probably tell, I am definitely no expert when it comes to this stuff!

I plan on using the free version of the AVG. I downloaded it about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I also need to download a firewall. I think I will go with ZoneAlarm.

Here is my combofix log:

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

You can read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

You also have the latest version of the Vundo infection. It is a file infector, and replaces many legit exe files in startup. It's possible these applications will need to be reinstalled.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\memojicn.dll
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

Here is the log. I am not sure if it submitted correctly though. The website said it could not be found when it opened up.

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

It's possible the site timed out before it uploaded, as it's not been received.

There should be on your desktop a file named similar to this:

[4]-Submit_2008-02-09@21:47.zip

Please upload it to this site.

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

Thanks, Jeff. You can now delete that zip file from your desktop.

Now would be a good time to uninstall the outdated AVG and install, update and run a full system scan with a new AV.

If you already have the downloader for the free AVG, that's fine. otherwise, download it, or one of the other choices here.

Disconnect from the internet. Uninstall the outdated AVG. Install the new AntiVirus. Connect to the internet, update definitions, and run a full system scan.

Once you've done that, post a new HijackThis log.

  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

P2P - I see you have P2P software ( Morpheus ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Also see these links:

If it's already been uninstalled, delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\MorpheusBar
C:\Program Files\Morpheus

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Close HijackThis now.

pause
del %0
Save this as fix.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on fix.bat & allow it to run

Post back to tell me what it says

Also post a new HijackThis log, and let me know how the machine is behaving.

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

Yes, I uninstalled Morpheus awhile ago. I just deleted those files in the Program Files folder. I also ran the HJT fix and deleted the entry you said. I copied and pasted the text into notepad and saved it as fix.bat, however, when I double click on it, nothing happens? I verified that I copied all the text and I did. I confirmed it is saved as a ms-dos batch file. Not sure why it won't run. Any ideas?

Re: Windows IE popups, malware slowing down system

Sorry about that, Jeff. I think I see why, I had this ready to go in another window, and pulled the trigger on the wrong page.

First....let's do this:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

Click on Scan.

Tick the boxes which should appear for these entries:

.bat - batfile - shell\edit\command - unable to read value
.cmd - cmdfile - shell\edit\command - unable to read value
.inf - inffile - shell\open\command - unable to read value
.ini - inifile - shell\open\command - notepad.exe %1
.reg - regfile - shell\edit\command - unable to read value
.txt - txtfile - shell\open\command - notepad.exe %1
.vbs - VBSFile - shell\edit\command - unable to read value

then Click on Fix

Click Scan again, you should get a message "All Associations OK!" Next, click Save Log, and post this log in your next reply.
