Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

Recently, my internet explorer 7 is getting bombarded with pop up ads. I noticed in privacy settings that the "accept all cookies" setting keeps getting immediately reset to accept all. I have ran HJT and posted logs and removed viruses but continue to have this problem. Is there anything I can do? Greatly appreciate your help.

2nd Request-Please help with annoying popups and slow performance.

I posted a message prior, maybe not in the right forum. My computer using IE7 has progressively deteriorated with constant pop ups, slower performance, and internet settings constantly defaulting to accept all cookies. Desperate for help. I tried running ad-aware and HJT, no improvement. If this gets fixed, really would like feedback on agood security program. My HJT log is as follows:

Re: 2nd Request-Please help with annoying popups and slow performance.

Hello and Welcome. Apologies for any delay in replying, but we have been rather busy lately.

You may wish to subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall you current version from Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Next, download HijackThis to your desktop.

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

We do not need to run it yet so if opens after being installed you may close it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

I just noticed that you have no anti-virus program installed on your system This must be resolved. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Install, update definitions, and run a full system scan with the Anti-Virus of your choice.

-----------------------

Run Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) again
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, one text file will open - main.txt
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your reply.

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

Clark, I downloaded and ran the AntiVir software. I did a full system scan. I also am getting a constant warning from the AntiVir of a "virus or unwanted program", usually a Trojan Horse TR/Vundo.Gen.

I ran the DSS and the main.txt is below. I did not get a extra.txt file this time, ran it again and still did not get it.

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

I ran the DSS and the main.txt is below. I did not get a extra.txt file this time, ran it again and still did not get it.
Don't worry, the DSS ran properly. It only produces the extra.txt on the first run or if we use a special switch.

====================

Next we are going to use ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

This is all I received back on the Combofix log file:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

And the HJT file now is:

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

Hello dko323

Did you have Norton Antivirus installed at one point on your computer then attempt to un-install it? I am seeing some evidence that at least parts of it are on your system.

in add/remove programs this is shown:
LiveUpdate 2.6

and there is this folder found in the Combofix log:
C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus
it was created on Christmas Day of 2007

If you indeed attempted to uninstall it please let me know and I will help you remove it.

------------------

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhvvjifc.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"0B51417F6A000F502851"=-
Collect::

Suspect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\systemdrv32.aso
Save this as "CFScript"

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...1.0.0.15-3.cab

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

---------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

----------------------------

Please provide the following logs with your next post:

C:\ComboFix.txt
Kaspersky Scan report
new Hijackthis log

Also include an update on how your system is running

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

Clark...I'm not sure if I tried to uninstall Norton or what I did. But if I do not need it, can you tell me how to remove these programs like Norton or Symantec.

The 3 logs follow. Thanks for all your assistance.

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

I dont believe I submitted a zip file. Not sure, it was late last night. I have followed your latest instructions and pasted from jotti's below.

The computer seems to be running better, still was getting some pop ups yesterday but not as many. Should I download anything else for security to hopefully avoid getting infected like this again?

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

I want to be clear. As of now you are still experiencing pop-ups on your system. If so what are the pop-ups for - advertising, alerts saying you are infected or something else?

----------------

Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

WARNING: Do not run cleanup under Windows XP x64 Edition. If you're not sure if you have the 64-bit version of Windows then you probably do not; however, you can check by using IE to download the whichcpu tool and then running it.

-------------------

Download AVG Anti Spyware
  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the main Status screen, under Your Computer's Security, click Resident Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Do Not Automatically generate report after every scan"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

-----------------

Reboot

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

------------------

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

----------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Depending on the amount of files that may needed to be scanned this can take an hour or two to complete.

-----------------------

Reboot

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

------------------------

Post back with the AVG Anti-Spyware report and the answer to my question

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

I believe the pop ups are not occurring now. I still had my privacy settings set to accept all cookies but moved it to medium and it is now holding there (it was not before).

I mistakenly ran Cleanup as soon as I installed it (without changing the settings). I am hopeful I didnt delete anything I needed it. I then went through all the steps you laid out including another cleanup. I did not receive anything found on the AVG latest report.

When booting back up, the start up was slightly slower than normal. I will check again when rebooting. But I think it is performing better.

Do I have the necessary security now on the computer?

Should I keep everything that I have since downloaded from your instructions?

Thanks!

Dan

Re: Please Help-Annoying Pop Ups

When we are finally done I will give you some links to some suggested programs for system security and have you remove some of the tools we used. Since your logs appear to be clean lets remove the Norton leftovers. That might even help speed up your system.

-------------

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist):

LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

-------------

Next download the Norton Removal Tool from here:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Save it to your desktop. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

Follow the on-screen instructions. Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

------------

Finally please run Deckard's System Scanner again, this time using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
Tick Extra Log and Add/Remove

Click Scan!
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  • Please attach extra.txt to your post.
