Virus/Buggy application

My computer has been having major issues the past 1-2 days. I believe I have a whole bunch of viruses/spyware on my computer that I cannot get rid of. Ive ran ad aware, spybot, and dr.alex but they have not helped. Here is a list of my problems...

1) Lots and Lots of error messages. Each say there own thing such as windows performed an illegal operation, your system could have critical errors. A potential problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown buggy application.

There are about 8-10 different error messages I get, the buggy application one is suspicious because of grammer.

2) Two icons have appeared on my desktop, windows update, and help and support center which aren't what they say they are. They go to some website which starts to download something. When deleting the icons they immediately appear again.

3) Internet explorer opens and attempts to download programs. Also lots of popups and fake malware/spyware scanning sites.

4) There is a red X next to my hard drive and when I click on it there are literally thousands of pos1a00, pos1a01,etc TMP files that range form 8-15kb each. These files also appear in my documents. When trying to delete them they also reappear.

5) The computer screen will freeze randomly, but the mouse is still functional. ctrl + alt + del don't seem to work, but I've only waited about five minutes too see if it would pop up. I have to restart my computer by holding down the power.

The following is a link which shows most of the errors/icons/pos files

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/8682/sceenkb9.jpg

I have tried system restoring and that has not got rid of the problem. I would like to avoid reinstalling windows if possible.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

I ran something called vandu fix and it got rid of the errors and the two icons. A new error pops up when restarting the computer. I think it deleted a file that the computer needs. It is now very slow. Still looking for help on the hijack this log though...

Re: Virus/Buggy application

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall from Add or Remove Programs, and then delete your current version.

Next, download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Please post a new log with the updated version.. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

I ran combofix and it found a few things but it never produced a log. I did a search for it as well but the only thing i found was a notepad that said this..

ComboFix 08-02-15.1 - Chris 2008-02-14 19:52:04.2 - NTFSx86
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Desktop\ComboFix.exe

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

However a rar file is now on the desktop that says "catchme" and it has 2 .dll files.

Also I saw a step that said combofix is changing your time settings and they will be restored later or something to that effect. However, it never did restore the time... does this mean it unexpectedly terminated? It looked like the scan finished too me, but maybe somehow it skipped a step?

Here is the hijackthis log:

Re: Virus/Buggy application

Quote:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

This machine does not have the Windows XP Recovery Console installed.

The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

Please do this:

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

That's just right. You may reboot as needed.

Please disconnect from the internet, be sure to disable all security applications, and run ComboFix once again by double clicking on it.

After it's done...

Re-enable protections, connect to the 'net and post the log...or let me know what happened.

That's more like it....

While I'm reviewing that log, please do this:

Create an uninstall list:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

Re: Virus/Buggy application

You have the latest version of the Vundo infection. It is a file infector, and replaces many legit exe files in startup. It's possible these applications will need to be reinstalled.

One of the applications which should be reinstalled is QuickTime. SUPERAntiSpyware may be another.

Please wait until I give the all clear before reinstalling any applications, though. Only perform the following steps.

Please read these next instructions carefully.

If you have questions, or encounter any troubles along the way, STOP and ask first.

This next part will take some time....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disconnect from the internet.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refrering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reconnect to the internet.

I see no evidence of an AntiVirus program on your system. This must be resolved. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the drop-down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

That looks much better.

When files found by other scanners are in the Recovery directory inside the Spybot-S&D directory, it is only a backup. It is no longer of any harm there, as the file won't be loaded from there. But once you are sure you don't need the backup, go to the Recovery section inside Spybot-S&D and purge the files.

1. Open Spybot.
If you have a shortcut on your desktop, double click it.
or
Click Start, then All Programs, then Spybot - Search & Destroy and then Spybot - Search & Destroy.
2. On the left side, click "Recovery".
3. Select (place a check) beside ALL the backup files that contain quarantined items.
4. Click on the Purge Selected Items button.
5. A dialog will appear, stating that the backup will be removed. Click Yes.
6. When the Recovery window is empty, Exit Spybot.

Delete this folder:

"C:\VundoFix Backups"

The other items found by Kaspersky will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix using the directions below.

Any applications which are not functioning properly at this time would need to be reinstalled, as they may have been casuaties of this infection.

If you have any other malware related issues, let me know, but from where I sit, your logs appear clean.

You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

Thank you very much for all your help. The computer is now working like it used too! There is one minor issue remaining however. I still have a red "X" next to my hard drive under my computer. Is there a way to get rid of that? Again, Thank you for all your help.

Re: Virus/Buggy application

Since we've removed previous registry backups, be sure to install ERUNT from the link above before performing this regfix.

Please download & install - ERUNT (This is a utility that'll replicate a copy of your Registry)
  1. Start ERUNT, confirm the Welcome message.

  2. Next, select the backup options:

    • System registry
    • Current User Registry
    • Other open user registry

  3. Click "OK" and wait until the backup process is complete. (Note that depending on your system configuration this may take some time, and that the first bar is NOT a progress bar, just an indicator that the program is still running.)
# Note: To ensure proper operation of ERUNT, you should be logged in as a system administrator.

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Let me know....
