Exclamation Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

I have recently been having problems with various spyware programs on my PC that I have removed with Spybot, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender or Norton. Now Norton seems to have found the cause of this; a virus called "Downloader.MisleadApp" stemming from C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtu.dll. This apparently downloads misleading applications to my computer and could be the source of my troubles. However although Norton finds it, it will not remove it as "Access to the file was denied". This causes an annoying loop of pop-ups as Norton continuously finds but is unable to delete this item. It may be there are other infections on my computer that also need removing. I have included a Deckard System Scanner log (no extra.txt was generated for some reason) with my post and would be very grateful if someone could advise me on how to remove this virus. I haven't included a Panda Activescan Report because it wouldn't run properly.

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Hello and welcome to TSF.

We'll begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Thanks a lot for your reply amateur, its great to see there are still people who will help others for little reward! Anyway I have posted the requested logs. The computer does seem to run a lot faster after completing Combofix; I just hope that it got everything. By the way perhaps I did it wrongly but I did install the Windows Recovery Console as shown on bleepingcomputer.com.

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Hi,
Quote:
By the way perhaps I did it wrongly but I did install the Windows Recovery Console as shown on bleepingcomputer.com.
Did you run the Combofix before you installed the Recovery Console?

==============================

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\7c95f29f

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

==============================

Open notepad (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad ). and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it (It must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won't work):

Code:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/219402-need-help-removing-awvtu-dll-computer.html#post1318047

KILLALL::

Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taugelma.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lbkppuve.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ginirgol.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdblpjjl.ini

Suspect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\7c95f29f
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

===========================

When you're done with the above,

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

The computer now seems to be running fine, I get no more pop ups and it runs just as fast as it did before the infection. Norton also no longer finds the "Downloader.MisleadApp" virus it continuously did before. It would seem that the computer is clean. Heres the new Hijackthis log you requested:-

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Hi,

Quote:
The computer now seems to be running fine, I get no more pop ups and it runs just as fast as it did before the infection. Norton also no longer finds the "Downloader.MisleadApp" virus it continuously did before. It would seem that the computer is clean.
Glad to hear that. We have a few more things to finish up yet. Infected items in the Kaspersky report are in the Quarantine cache of Norton and the System Restore cache (we'll clear that in a short while).

C:\Program Files\NortonSystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\ is your antivirus program's quarantine cache. You should delete the contents. Please use Symantec's guide to remove the files from quarantine. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...on=1#_Section1

Youll need to disable the guarding functions of some security tools so that they will not interfere with the fixes. You can re-enable them once the computer is clean:

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Use Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Norton Script Blocking

  • Start Norton Antivirus.
  • Click Options.
  • If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus.
  • The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
  • Click Script Blocking.
  • Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
  • Click OK
Disable Teatimer
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Hi,

The log is clean. However,

Quote:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
This machine does not have the Windows XP Recovery Console installed. I know you said that you installed it, but the consecutive logs state otherwise. Although the machine appears to be clean now, I'd still recommend that you install the Recovery Console for future, just in case.

The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

With malware infections being as they are today, hopefully it won't be needed, but it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any future malware removal.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Hi,

It's all good. You can reboot your system without any problem. Now that your computer is clean, please perform the following final steps to keep it that way:
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them already):
AdAwareA tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Spybot A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Windows Defender here

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, e.g. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

IE-SPYAD This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

SiteHound by Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable.
This product can be downloaded from here: here:

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, e.g. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

Ccleaner is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. Tutorial for CCleaner will explain how to use it. Note: Don't use the Registry (formerly Issues) block as it deals with the registry and can be dangerous.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here and more on improving speed/system performance after malware removal here .

Re: Need Help Removing awvtu.dll from Computer

Thanks a lot for your help you've saved me a lot of work in wiping my computer. I've downloaded many of those programs you recomended so hopefully this won't happen again. One thing was though when I uninstalled Combofix Norton found and removed a "Trojan.Adclicker" from my computer. Was this something to do with Combofix? Anyway everything seems fine and once again thanks for your help .

It's possible that Norton sees and flags some strings as malware but I wouldn't know that unless you can give me the file path of the so called "Trojan.Adclicker" from Norton's report.

OK. That's no threat. It's referring to a file which was already quarantined by Combofix. You're fine.
