Re: "Is this you?" Virus from MSN. Please Help!

Hello and welcome to TSF.

I am sorry but your machine is infected with a couple of backdoor trojans which allow a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels and spreads via file sharing on P2P networks and to other network computers. Please disconnect this computer from the network, if any, and keep it disconnected from the internet until it's cleaned. Use it only to download the tools necessary to clean it. Although it has only been a few days since you got infected and the chances are slight, please be aware that your computer may have been compromised.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
=======================

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

=======================

Exptected logs:

Report.txt
Combofix.txt
A fresh HijackThis log

Re: "Is this you?" Virus from MSN. Please Help!

It's OK to restart now. After you restart, please disable your security applications run Combofix.exe as instructed at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Re: "Is this you?" Virus from MSN. Please Help!

Hi,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

=================================

I see that you are using Azureus, which is a p2p file sharing program. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Also by default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft.
I recommend very strongly that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

===================================

Please disable the following programs so that they will not interfere with the fixes:

Disable Teatimer
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

====================================

Disable AVG Anti Spyware 7.5:

Open AVG Anti Spyware.
Under 'Status',click on "change status" to make it 'inactive'. Once your log is clean you can re-enable it.

====================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q304&bd=presario&pf=laptop
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.hotmail.com

It may be helpful to know that when you put an item in your Trusted Zone, it has pretty much full access to your computer... Are you sure you trust this site to that degree?? If you're not sure, and/or you do not need these in your trusted zone to facilitate access, or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please fix the following O15 entries....

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.live.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.msn.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.passport.com

====================================

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

=====================================

Please post a fresh HijackThis log, the Kaspersky report and let me know how the computer is running now.

Re: "Is this you?" Virus from MSN. Please Help!

I am currently downloading/updating Kaspersky Online Scanner, should I get my external hard drive scanned as well? I had the drive plugged in when I first got the file from msn.

I will post the logs as soon as I am done! Can't thank you enough for your help.

The scan for Kaspersky took about 2 n half hours, plus there is an E:/ showing among the infected files, does that mean my hard drive has virus as well? Can I disconnect it or should I leave it on?

No, you're OK. System Volume Information is the System Restore cache and "Object is locked skipped" means that it's in use.

===================================

Infected items are in the Java cache and the Symantec Quarantine.

Please go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
Click the Delete Files... button below. Make sure next are checked:
Applications and Applets
Trace and Log Files

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

=====================================
  • Open Norton
  • click Reports
  • click View Quarantine
  • Highlight Quarantine items
  • click Action (at top of box)
  • Delete Make sure everything is deleted in Quarantine list
  • Close Norton.

======================================

How is the computer running now?

If you have no further issues, you're all set to go. The logs are clean.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

    This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Ccleaner is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. Tutorial for CCleaner will explain how to use it. Note: Don't use the Registry (formerly Issues) block as it deals with the registry and can be dangerous.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here and more on improving speed/system performance after malware removal here .

If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!
