Hi, I am running Windows XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 2 and as per title above, my PC has a couple of spyware alerts and Windows Security Alerts ("Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt", etc...) that seem to be on a constant loop, the main one being a security warning re: the Netsky worm. I have performed the suggested Steps 1-5 in your forum with the exception of Step 2. After a couple of hours (dial-up speed) of installing the Active-X controls and performing the Panda activescan, Internet Explorer decided to shut down (which is typical at the moment in my PC's current state, most of the time it won't even open). IE will also start automatically from time to time. I have installed the two spyware programs (spyware blaster & ie-spyad), DSS and HyjackThis and have attached the Extra.txt doc to this thread for assessment. I appreciate any help you could provide to clean these infections from my machine.
Many thanks, Brocky |

Re: Constant pop-ups - Worm.Win32.Netsky
Hello, Brocky, and welcome.
If you still require assistance for this issue, please post the main.txt log from DSS. If it's been closed, it should be located at C:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txt

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix) Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download HijackThis to your desktop Alternate link Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Re: Constant pop-ups - Worm.Win32.Netsky
That looks much better. We have some more work to do.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update. Updating Java:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also tell me how the machine is behaving now.

System seems a lot more stable now. I still have Windows updates off and my AVG Control centre still pops up saying my antivirus software is out of date. How should I proceed with these two items and is there another antivirus software that you would recommend? Cheers, Brocky |

Re: Constant pop-ups - Worm.Win32.Netsky
Can you enable Windows Update, or visit the site and download and install new updates, or are you being prevented from doing that?
Can you updated your AVG? If it's a paid version, and the subscription is expired, it won't update any longer. If you like, I can give you some free choices. AVG has a free version....as does Avira and Avast Open NOTEPAD.exe and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it: Code:
@echo off if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt" for %%g in ( "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\installer_en[1].exe" "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SDFix\backups\backups.zip" ) do ( del /a/f %%g >nul 2>&1 if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt" ) for %%g in ( %systemdrive%\Deckard ) do ( rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>&1 if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt" ) if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt" ) else echo.Deleted Successfully !! pause del %0 It should look like this: Double click on fix.bat & allow it to run Post back to tell me what it says

Re: Constant pop-ups - Worm.Win32.Netsky
Great. Please do press any key. The file will self-delete.
About the Windows updates, and AVG....?

Re: Constant pop-ups - Worm.Win32.Netsky
Well, that should be it then....
Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
