Re: Pop-Ups

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

How to Use ComboFix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Re: Pop-Ups

I was following the guide and i proceeded with the following step:
Quote:
Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go.
When I did this, it automatically opened ComboFix and since the tutorial didnt say that would happen i typed "2" for "abort" and now it turned my ComboFix icon on my desktop into an Internet Explorer icon. What do I do now?

Re: Pop-Ups

Hi, re-download ComboFix and perform that step again. Type 1 and press Enter at the prompt. Let ComboFix do it's thing, which at that point is installing the Recovery Console. Post back the log it produces, CF-RC.txt.

Do NOT reboot your machine until I've reviewed that log.

From the Guide:

Quote:
# Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go. This is shown in the following image.

# ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Sorry, I should have said, do not run ComboFix or reboot the machine until I've reviewed the CF-RC.txt log.

Now that I have, please do continue.

Just add a new reply, don't edit the previous post.

Re: Pop-Ups

Nope, not a problem. I wanted a log from HijackThis this time around, we're done with DSS for now. That's ok though, it also shows me what I wanted to see, just more detail than I needed. There should be on your desktop a shortcut to HijackThis.exe, or it's located here:

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Please use this next time a HijackThis log is requested.

==================================================

Your popups should be a thing of the past. We have a bit more work to do.

I see parts of SBC Yahoo AntiVirus installed still, along with Avast. Having more than one AntiVirus installed is not a good idea. It can cause system conflict. Choose one to keep, and uninstall the other.

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the drop-down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Also tell me how the machine is behaving.

Re: Pop-Ups

I keep getting the following message when I try to uninstall the older version of Java and the updates that are listed. Ive never gotten this message before when trying to uninstall a program.

Quote:
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
Also, do you know how I would go about removing the parts of SBC Yahoo AntiVirus? I don't see it listed in my add/remove programs list anywhere

Looks like it's located here:

C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus

It should be this entry in Add/Remove programs:

AT&T Yahoo! Applications --> C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\common\uninstall.exe

From what I've read....

Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>look for AT&T Applications > click Remove> a windows appears and you can select the Items you want to uninstall. Only select AntiVirus or similar. Let me know how that goes.

Re: Pop-Ups

As far as the java goes...give this a try:

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
in the list and click the Remove button.

Once J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility

Re: Pop-Ups

I was able to uninstall the SBC Yahoo AntiVirus and it had me restart my computer when it was finished.

I downloaded the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and saved it to my desktop and when I ran "msicuu2.exe" I got the same message.

Re: Pop-Ups

Try this:

# Manually register the Windows Installer executable:

1. Launch Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key + E or select Start > Run and type explorer.
2. Browse to the Windows System folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System32 or C:\WINNT\System32.
3. Locate the file msiexec.exe. Note the location (path) to the file. Use this path to register msiexe.exe using the instructions

Follow these steps to register an executable, or .exe, file:

1. On the Taskbar, select Start > Run.
2. In the Open field, type "<path>\msiexe.exe" /REGSERVER, where <path> is the directory where the file is located on your computer and NameOfFile.exe is the name of the file. For example:

"C:\Windows\System32\msiexe.exe" /REGSERVER
3. Press Enter.

Most executables do not display any message boxes when registered. It depends on how the application is created. Some applications when registered may open on your computer.

Then try uninstalling a Java from Add/Remove.

Do they all give that problem, or is it just one of them?

Re: Pop-Ups

I went to Start > Run and typed "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe /REGSERVER" when I pressed enter I received the message "An event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers"

I tried Method 1 on the Microsoft Support page that you linked to and got the same thing

Re: Pop-Ups

Ok.

Rather than spend too much time on this Windows issue right now, perform the online scan at Kaspersky first, and we'll go back to the java uninstall issue. I want to be sure infections are gone.
