Re: Malware Help Please!
Hi Pete -
I would think the desktop in Mommy account is now back to normal. Before we proceed, please let me know the status.

Re: Malware Help Please!
All appears normal under the Mommy Account (i.e., desktop is back to normal, I can access the Display Properties by right clicking on the desktop, no error messages are appearing, etc.).

Re: Malware Help Please!
Great.
A bit more work to do. These next actions are global, not limited to user accounts. Perform this from your usual account. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update. Updating Java:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one. Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post what should be a final HijackThis log from your usual account.

Re: Malware Help Please!
Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.
You can delete these, as they are no longer needed: C:\Downloads\SmitfraudFix C:\Downloads\SmitfraudFix.exe C:\SDFix C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete dss.exe Other items found by kaspersky are in System Restore points. They'll be addressed by the following the steps below. C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Malware Help Please!
I've downloaded SpywareBlaster but I don't "see" it as an executing process in the Task Manager - how do I know that it's running? Can SpywareBlaster run in conjunction with the others (IE-SpyAd, Nortons 2008). Apparently, I also have SpyBot running (found under the "Tools" menu on IE) - should I leave it or should I uninstall it? I have the Norton's Personal Firewall Protection running is that sufficient? I'm unsure if the combination of all of these will degrade my protection (i.e., one cancelling out the other).
Thanx, Pete |

If you experience a degradation of performance after installing one of the applications (best to add one at a time, and see how the machine responds), remove it. I use all the above applications on my systems with no issue, but I use NOD32 for an AntiVirus. It's not as resource intensive as Norton. Does that help?

Re: Malware Help Please!
Then that looks that should be it then.
I would like to personally thank you for all of your assistance and responsiveness to my plight. I have 30 years experience as a software engineer working on TRIDENT submarines with the world's largest defense contractor. I've been programming in "c" under a "real-time unix environment" on "one-off" computers for the past 20 years so I am pretty computer savy but when these "problems" arise it drives me up a wall. Once again, my family and I would like to thank you for your help. Thanx, Pete |

Re: Malware Help Please!
You're quite welcome, Pete. I'm glad to have been able to help.
I surely don't have that much time in, or that sort of experience, but malware removal is a specialized field I find very interesting. Modern malware can be a right nasty thing to get rid of. Happy Computing, and Safe Surfing to you!
