Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

I am getting an "unknow trojan" pop-up constantly that says:
"System Error-
Your computer was infected by an unknown trojan. It is dangerous for your system. Critical files can be lost. Click OK to download the anti-spyware program to clean your system (Recomended)"
It has also begun to hijack my search results in Google etc. Giving false error message that says "your results 'has' been hijacked.... click here to get the program that you need to fix this" (the bad grammar threw the red flag here)

I have McAfee and ran AdAware scan. I also uninstalled any unfamilliar programs. These havn't helped. I tried the Panda program suggested by this site and I can't tell if it did anything at all! (currently have a customer service question in with them because I can't really tell if I even got the product that I paid for!) Started to try AVG, but it wanted me to uninstall all of the others. I didn't want to do that. I was concerned that I was getting too much conflicting info.

Please help.

Here is my log:

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

I am not sure how to edit my post, so I am just going to try and add on here. I used something called spyware doctor. It told me that there was an infection called toprates.dll (C:\windows\toprates.dll) seems that this pop up I am experiencing may be caused by this. I tried to remove it by searching for the file, but once the file was found, I couldn't remove it because it was "in use by other users or programs) I didn't know what to do beyond this but thought that the info might help.

Thanks,
OHgirl

Idea Re: Files-Secure has invaded

I have found a posting from someone with the same complaint. It was remarkably similar to my case. Even down to our operating systems it seems (although I don't claim to be an expert)

I followed advice given to that person (yes, at my own discretion)
It seems to have cleared things up.
The other person was "trojan warning constantly popping up" posted1-06-08

I ran SDFix.exe in safe mode and my problem seems to have disappeared.
Can you take a look at this updated DSS report and let me know if you see anything additional that I need to do.

Hopefully I haven't shot myself in the foot

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

Here is the report that you asked for. I hope you can give me good news. So far everything looks much better. But, I know that there could always be something that is hiding in the background.
Thanks for your time.

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

Looking real good. A bit more work to do.

Thanks for asking, I like most logs posted, unless otherwise requested. They're easier for me to read.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: DeskalertsBHO - {5121B863-FAE8-4935-BA76-0ABE0239AECA} - C:\Program Files\DeskAlerts\deskbar.dll (file missing)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Locate and delete this folder if it exists:

C:\Program Files\DeskAlerts

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the drop-down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

Here is the Kaspersky report. Wow it looks like there is still a lot to find and delete. I noticed that there were remnants of several things I thought I had already gotten rid of lingering in System Folders.
I will be back with the Hijackthis rept.

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

The items found by Kaspersky are in Quarantine or System Restore's cache.

Delete the contents of this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\MICHAEL\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

Other than that.....

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete dss.exe

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial
  • FIREWALL
If you do not have a firewall, here are a couple of great free ones available for personal use. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

"Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other."
I currently have McAfee. My husband said that he thought that he remembered getting an email that was telling him our mcafee subscription wouldn't be good much longer. I feel dumb for asking, but is this true or will the program continue to update and work as usual without our purchasing an actual subscription from them? It is so difficult to tell the difference between what is really needed and when someone is just trying to con some more money for a false sense of security. Would I be better off to get rid of McAfee altogether and get another type of firewall where the functionality and terms are a little more clear?

Re: Files-Secure has invaded [Moved from IE]

No need to worry about asking questions. It's always better to ask and be sure.

Typically, with most paid protection products, you're purchasing a one-year subscription. Some are longer, but the subscription term is almost always finite.

The application will still function afterwards, but without a current subscription, will not be allowed to get updates. So, if you've received notice that it's going to expire soon, you'll want to address that in some fashion. There's usually a way to check on the expiration date in a security product within the application's interface. I don't use McAfee, so I'm not exactly familiar with how or where.

There are several good free products available, if you're comfortable putting together your own protection packages. Many people like the ease of a security suite, which includes AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, Firewall, and perhaps even AntiPhishing protection, so they go with the paid applications.

A good security package consists of AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall at a minimum.

If you follow the recommendations in my last post, or the link in my signature, or here....

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

You'll see several recommended FREE antivirus, antispyware and firewall products.

If you're comfortable with McAfee and familiar with it, it may be best for you to simply renew the subscription.

If you want to look into comparisons of different products, this site is a good starting point:

www.av-comparatives.org

I hope that helps....
