Re: suspected malware problems

Hello -

What is your current AntiVirus solution? I see parts of both AVG and McAfee. AVG seems to be outdated, but McAfee doesn't seem to be fully installed.

Is PC Tools Firewall new to you? It seems like it was just installed, perhaps part of the problem lies there.

I do see infection in this log, but before we begin, I'd like answers to the above questions.

Thanks.

Re: suspected malware problems

We'll try to address AVG as we progress through this fix. For now, perform this next step to remove McAfee completely.

All '05, '06, and '07 McAfee products
Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

Once you've done that, continue with these next steps...

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop
  2. Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!
  3. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. Type 1, then press Enter to start the fix.
  5. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.
  8. Re-establish an internet connection.
  9. Please download HijackThis to your desktop

    Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

    1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
    2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
    3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: suspected malware problems

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint Manager<<<this is considered foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgjjl.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgjjl.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwvwa.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwvwa.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwvwa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yxbeg.bak1

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

Driver::
lsass

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\dmderf]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ViewMgr"=-
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: suspected malware problems

That's looking much better.

Before we continue, tell me the current status of your internet/browser/AVG updates.

Re: suspected malware problems

I can't say that I really understand that. It sounds to me like some application on the machine, either Real Player, or your firewall, is preventing your browsers from accessing the internet. I would check on the settings within those applications.

Re: suspected malware problems

Also, see if you can run this online scan through Real.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: suspected malware problems

Ok, so your machine does not appear to be infected any longer.

I would say again, I think it's one of your applications preventing your browsers from connecting to the internet, quite possibly the firewall.

What happens exactly when you try to open IE, for example?

You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click the feed you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)
