I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi everyone!
I know you must have a ton of problems to try and fix, but I really cannot afford to lose my computer - I'm scared that it's doing to die on me. I really have no idea how to get rid of viruses, malware and spyware...my Avast isn't able to move certain files to chest and I have no clue what to do. What I did: downloaded hijackthis and got a log and start up list of my problems...now, when I look at this log, I don't understand it! It's not English to me. I can copy and paste my info. Will you please tell me what to do? I'm so very very lost... My startup list: StartupList report, 12/1/2007, 1:24:24 AM StartupList version: 1.52.2 Started from : C:\Documents and Settings\Danna\Desktop\HiJackThis.EXE Detected: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) Detected: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) * Using default options ================================================== Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\DkService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\VTTimer.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\SSScsiSV.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\ObjectDock\ObjectDock.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\YzToolbar\YzToolBar.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WISPTIS.EXE C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\usnsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimpl.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\Danna\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe -------------------------------------------------- Listing of startup folders: Shell folders Startup: [C:\Documents and Settings\Danna\Start Menu\Programs\Startup] Stardock ObjectDock.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\ObjectDock\ObjectDock.exe Y'z ToolBar.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\YzToolbar\YzToolBar.exe -------------------------------------------------- Checking Windows NT UserInit: [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] UserInit = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, -------------------------------------------------- Autorun entries from Registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run VTTimer = VTTimer.exe SoundMan = SOUNDMAN.EXE avast! Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi again,
This is going to be a long post! 1 - I deleted the 2 viewpoint programs you mentionned, as well as Bearshare. I did not delete Bitcomet because it is listed as 'clean' on the link you posted above. 2 - For some reason, Pandascan stopped scanning when it was 1/5th done. I tried it twice (Avast was completely turned off) and it still stopped at the exact place. Just in case this will help, I've added 'where' the scanner stopped both times: 27644 Files scanned ...r[2007_06_12\ZbThumbnail.info] However, it did give me a report for the portion it did scan. Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi danna
From what i can find out about ZbThumbnail.info this is a file created by zoom browser to store thumbnail information. The thumbnail file is there so that you can view your images in programs like zoombrowser. From Canon customer support: The ZBThumnail.info has information pertaining to the various thumbnail images that represent the images that are contained in your Pictures folder. Nothing will happen if the thumbnail file is deleted. A new one will be created the next time ZoomBrowser EX is launched. It is not necessary to move the thumbnail file when moving images. ZoomBrowser EX will update the thumbnail files as needed. It is not possible to store two thumbnail files in the same folder as they will both have the same name (one of them will need to be deleted). Sincerely, Technical Support Representative ---------------------- As for you question about the file in the virus chest i am unable to see what the file is.Can you write down the location and the virus name Avast has given it and post that in your next reply. ======================== Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Reboot when you have remove both ====================== Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Please follow instructions in my last post.Does Avast give the gamesetup.exe a detection name.Panda did not detect that file and this could mean that Avast is calling it a generic detection which can be good or bad.
The file could belong to a particular gaming programme you have installed.

Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi Bruce,
I followed all your instructions and got both logs (Kaspersky and Hijackthis). It looks like Kaspersky didn’t’ find any …that’s a great thing After doing this however, I did another Avast scan and the results were very different. Avast says my computer is infected whereas Kaspersky says otherwise. You may want to look at Avast’s results as well. Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi Danna
From what i can make out from the Avast scan it is detecting Deckard System Scanner, not to worry they are safe and we`ll remove DSS at the end.If you can post a screenshot of the Avast scan that would be better. As for Win32:CTX that file belongs to Panda active scan and is harmless, can you post the exact location of the gamesetup.exe file and is it still present. ======================= Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. ========================= You don't seem to have a firewall program installed. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:. ======================== Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ========================= Log Required Hijackthis log

Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi again Bruce,
The Gamesetup.exe file did not come up again in my last Avast Scan. Anyhow, I deleted it the last time I had it so I don’t have the file anymore… Having a Firewall that will ask you what applications to allow sounds like a great way to protect your computer, only I have no idea which applications should and shouldn't be allowed. This probably explains why my internet stopped working when I downloaded Comodo...I had no clue what to allow and all of a sudden my internet stopped working so I had to uninstall Comodo in order to get back online. It didn't even recognize Avast and asked me if I wanted to allow these 'unrecognizable' applications...do you know of any user -friendly Firewalls (VERY user-friendly)? (Apparently Zonealarm takes up a lot of ram...but do you think my computer could handle it and if it is user-friendly?) Here is my Hijackthis log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 9:22:45 PM, on 12/13/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\DkService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\VTTimer.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\ObjectDock\ObjectDock.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\YzToolbar\YzToolBar.exe C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\SSScsiSV.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Danna\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe R0 - Can you save the Avast report as a text file(notepad)and post it that way,if not here are instructions for uploading screenshots: In Windows a screenshot of the entire monitor, complete with taskbar, can be copied to the system clipboard by pressing the Print screen key (normally located in the top row on the right-hand side of the keyboard).. You can then paste the clipboard into a program like MS Paint to save it as an image file or paste it directly into a document. * Press the Print screen key * Click the "Start" button (normally located in the bottom left of your screen). * Click "Run" & type "mspaint" (without quotes) & click the "OK" button. * Wait while the application "Paint" opens. Once it is open, proceed to the next step. * Click the "Edit" menu and select "Paste". * Click the "File" menu and select "Save As...". A dialog box will appear. * In the "File name" field, enter a name of your choice. * Click the "Save as type" drop-down and select "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE*;.JFIF)". * Click the "Save" button and save it to your desktop. Attach the image to your reply by using the Manage Attachments button * Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page. * Browse to the image you created--it will be on your desktop. ================================ As for the firewall, you really need a firewall that offers inbound and outbound protection. There are infections that try to steal your private data and send it back to there servers,as you have no outbound protection(windows xp firewall only offers inbound)you would not be aware of this. The only "VERY user-friendly",firewalls i can think of are Norton and Mcafee.Of course these security suite are somewhat bloated and can slow your system down. Read this article: Understanding and Using Firewalls ============================== Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any) O20 - AppInit_DLLs: Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. ================================ Then click on Main Menu and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. =============================== Log Required Hijackthis log

Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi again Bruce,
So here’s what I’ve done - I downloaded Zonealarm and it is installed and running (and my internet works!). I am very happy with this Firewall. I then fixed the file “020 App etc” and did the Hijackthis log you requested (which is pasted below). For some reason, Techsupportforum is having trouble uploading my screenshots - I even checked the size of them and they are on 78 KB...don't know why this is happening, I'll try again later. Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 2:21:31 PM, on 12/16/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\VTTimer.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\DkService.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\ObjectDock\ObjectDock.exe C:\WINDOWS\BricoPacks\Vista Inspirat\YzToolbar\YzToolBar.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\SSScsiSV.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\usnsvc.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Danna\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe R0 - Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hi Bruce,
I was able to attach the two images of Avast's scans today! One image is the scan results, the other is of what is in the Virus Chest. Is there anything I should delete from the chest? And finally, if I need help again, can I ask you? I find you clear, easy to understand, informative and you get right to the point. An excellent Analyst. I will, of course, donate again if it ends up being a serious thing like what you have helped me with. Danna |

Re: I suck with computers, I need serious help!
Hello again Danna
Thank you for your donation. I can see those images and there is nothing to worry about. When you remove Deckard System Scanner those files will be deleted as well. The two Win32:CTX are files that belong to Panda online scan and are harmless. As for the corrupted files it seems that Avast is not being able to resolve it's analysis of the files as neither Kaspersky or Panda flagged them. ========================== Well done, your logs are clean.
