Unsure of virus type

Hi,
I justed registered today to your forum and can't seem to determine what virus is attacking my laptop. My computer runs slow and takes a long time to open anything I try to access. Sometimes it freezes altogether and I have to shut down and reboot. I'm running XP Pro. A previous virus scan with AntoVir showed a possible Vundo issue. Running a Vundo removal tool was useless. I also scan constantly with Spybot and Adaware which removes spyware but doesn't solve the problem. I have worked with HiJackThis some time ago but for all intents I am rather new. Below is a HJT log from today. Please let me know what other info you may need to help. Thank you in advance.
Bert

Re: Unsure of virus type

Hello and welcome to TSF.
Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it’s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven’t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please post a fresh HijackThis log and I’ll be happy to help you.

Amateur,
No, actually I meant today. Don't know what I was thinking when I said "on Monday", been a rough week, sorry. Anyway, here is the latest HJT log. Thanks, Bert.

Re: Unsure of virus type

Hi,

Please do me a favor. You are using an old version of HijackThis and it's in a temporary directory.
Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
  1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
  3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
  5. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
  7. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  8. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
  9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You may uninstall/delete the older version once you have successfully downloaded and installed the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2.

Re: Unsure of virus type

Hi,

You appear to be running two antivirus applications, i.e. AntiVir and Network Associates' VirusScan. Multiple antivirus programs won't give you extra protection, but, on the contrary, can bog down your system, interfere with each other, and may even cause crashes. I strongly recommend you remove one of them using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

=====================================

I noticed that you are using LimeWire, which is a p2p file sharing program. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Also, by default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. I recommend very strongly that you remove LimeWire too from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

=====================================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  • Remove all entries of Runtime Environment (J2SE or JRE) that are listed.
  • Now reboot your computer.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.
=====================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://search.bearshare.com/sidebar.html?src=ssb
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AC35F647-8DFF-4ACC-B429-FC1B1D572825} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byvut.dll (file missing)
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Close all browsers/windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

=====================================

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing the scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
******
=======================================

Restart your computer, scan with HijackThis again post the fresh log along with the ComboFix txt.

Re: Unsure of virus type

Thank you for your help, I have completed most of what you suggested. I seem to be having a problems removing Antivir from the control panel. It starts removing then suddenly shuts down windows causing me to have to reboot. Meanwhile, here is the ComboFix and new HJT logs. Thanks again, Bert

Good. I was just going to tell you to do that.

If you have already removed LimeWire, the following folders should also be deleted, but you'll need to set the hidden files to show first.

Go to My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View>"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK.

** These files are hidden to stop you or anybody else accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you're done. **

C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Documents and Settings\My C840\Application Data\LimeWire

You might also consider removing BearShare via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and delete its folders too:

C:\Documents and Settings\My C840\Application Data\BearShare
C:\Program Files\BearShare Applications

=======================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

O16 - DPF: {2BC66F54-93A8-11D3-BEB6-00105AA9B6AE} (Symantec AntiVirus scanner) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/S...in/AvSniff.cab
O16 - DPF: {644E432F-49D3-41A1-8DD5-E099162EEEC5} (Symantec RuFSI Utility Class) - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/S.../bin/cabsa.cab

Close all browsers and click on "fix checked".

=======================================

Restart your computer

=======================================

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Re: Unsure of virus type

Amatuer,
Some notes on your last suggestions. All tasks completed except for removal of Bearshare. This is a monthly paid subscription music service I use for my part time DJ work so I have to keep it. As for Kaspersky, after I select the scan settings and hit "Ok" it returns to the scan settings screen and will not launch. I tried several times. Any ideas?
Thanks, Bert

P.S. The computer does seem somewhat faster even after what we've done so far.

BTW, I turned off all antivirus and spyware before trying to run Kaspersky.

Re: Unsure of virus type

OK. Let's try another scanner then.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click

Great. Ignore my post about Panda in that case. We were posting at the same time apparently.

Re: Unsure of virus type

Hi,

Yes, there is one file which is infected with a trojan downloader. Did you perhaps download it via one of those p2p file sharing programs? Anyway, please delete it, using Windows Explorer to locate it (right click on Start, click on Explore)

C:\Documents and Settings\My C840\My Documents\spandau ballet karaoke.wm

Other than that, I think you're all set to go if all is well.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them already):
AdAwareA tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Spybot A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Windows Defender here

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, e.g. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

IE-SPYAD This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

SiteHound by Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable.
This product can be downloaded from here: here:

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, e.g. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

Ccleaner is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. Tutorial for CCleaner will explain how to use it. Note: Don't use the Registry (formerly Issues) block as it deals with the registry and can be dangerous.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here and more on improving speed/system performance after malware removal here .

If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!
