Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Every single time that an address loads for me in IE, I get this pop-up:

"Your system is probably infected with the latest version of Trojan.Zlob-X.a

Full system optimization will greatly increase your computer's performance and prevent data loss

Click OK to download antispyware software! (Recommended)"

I just finished updating my Spybot- Search & Destroy, and am currently running a scan as I'm typing this. 3/4 done and nothing found yet.

Anyone able to help, please?

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Please follow MicroBell's 5 Step process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...tml#post342651

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Panda ActiveScan-> I tried running the scan on My Computer 3 separate times. It will get about 1/4th of the way through the scan, and then the window for the scan itself, and also the Panda Scan site window will just close on their own. So, I could not get a log from Panda Scan.

Spyware Blaster-> downloaded, installed, and updated.

Operating System Updates-> I went to the Microsoft site and checked for any high-priority updates for my system. I have Automatic Updates enabled, so I was not able to find anything that was needed, as those updates download and install themselves for me.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

FW: Norton Internet Security v2005 (Symantec Corporation) Disabled
AV: Norton Internet Security v2005 (Symantec Corporation) Outdated

Norton appears to be expired. This affords you no protection. Is your subscription current?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Download this file - http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

  2. Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!
  3. Go to -> Run -> paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

  4. Follow the prompts. Type "1" and press Enter to begin the scan.
  5. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Re-establish an internet connection.
  8. You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall from Add or Remove Programs, and then delete your current version.

Next, download HijackThis to your desktop

    Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

    1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
    2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
    3. Please post a new log with the updated version.. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post logs from ComboFix and HijackThis

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{29C79434-BA0A-4A48-A451-70F19B4A4925}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA}]

Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdivx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\DLP.dll

Suspect::
C:\943.tmp
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

I submitted the file to BleepingComputer.com, it told me to make you aware of the fact.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Thanks for uploading the file and letting me know.

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\6A6.tmp

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Okay. I cannot get this to work. I went to the site and sent the file. The upload starts, and the status bar at the bottom of IE will fill up completely, then... Nothing. It doesn't do anything further. I'm not surfing any other sites or anything at all that would slow it down while it's sending. I tried it multiple times last night, and after the status bar shows completion I let it sit for over an hour each time. I just tried again, and nothing still.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

In doing some more digging, I think those files are related to Panda Active scan.

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also let me know how the machine is behaving.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Okay, scan is done. System seems to be functioning fairly normally. I ran two games: Guild Wars, and Counter-Strike: Source. Both of them seemed to function normally. I also browsed a few websites related to both, and everything overall seems to be normal, except my connection seems to be a bit laggy, but that could be unrelated...?

Anywho, the important thing is that those uber-annoying pop-ups have stopped. So I'm happy about that!

Here is the Kaspersky Report: (I tried to attach it, but it saved as an .html file and it wouldn't let me upload it into the reply. Sorreh.)

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Thanks, the txt file is better for me.

As far as the connection goes, that might be ISP or hardware related. Once we're done here, you may want to ask in the Networking forum about that.

Please see this page about CursorCafe

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/unin...Installer.html

Have you intentionally installed it?

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Negative. Don't even know what it is. And, if this information helps you out in any way whatsoever, my brother had used this computer and had allowed an ActiveX control to install so that he could watch a friends' video. He said that after he had watched the vid, he did some more surfing and that is when the Trojan pop-ups started.

This is how Zlob gets onto people's machines. Quite often, from unsavory video sites, but sometimes from otherwise legit-looking sites. The bad guys park code in pages. Lesson for him is.... Never simply Run a codec...download to local machine, and scan first before executing.

Uninstall CursorCafe from Add or Remove Programs, and then delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\CursorCafe

let me know how that goes.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Also, I just looked at CursorCafe in Add/Remove Programs... Shows that it was Installed/Last Used on 5/16/2006. So, it's apparently been on here for a while, and I have no idea what it is. That's lovely.

Re: Constant Trojan.Zlob-X.a pop-ups in IE

Good, that means it uninstalled without a fight.

As far as the other finds by Kaspersky....Azureus is P2P. I would not recommend it's use.

We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete these files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brandon\Desktop\[4]-Submit_2007-12-10@19.36.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\Brandon\My Documents\Azureus_2.4.0.2_Win32.setup.exe

Other finds are in Norton Quarantine. Delete the contents of this folder, but leave the folder itself:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine

Other than that....

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Do not install more than one AntiVirus program because they will conflict with each other.

  • FIREWALL
If you do not have a firewall, here are a couple of great free ones available for personal use. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

You said Azureus is "P2P"... Is it like Limewire and/or Kazaa?

That's right. While the program itself may be clean, the way P2P programs function leave machines wide open to infection. The links I've given have some good info.
