no control panel virus
hey all of you who took time to read this and possibly help me with my problem. ok well here we go. i've noticed that my control panel has recently been missing from my start menu, and theres no way i can open it. everytime i try to open it i get a message saying "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. please contact your system administrator." this also happens when i go to set program access and defaults. I have Norton, windows defender, and windows live one care and none of those detect any virus on my computer, but its obvious that there is one. I really dont want to get my computer sent in, and i feel im pretty good in fixing problems on my own (even though i dont know the computer abreviations and lingo thats used on these type of sites) so can someone please help me fix this. it sucks
.oh and ps, ive checked the registry and nothing is preventing control panel from showing up in there. |

Quote:
This is fairly typical of recent infections. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it: Quote:
It should look like this: Double click on peek.bat & allow it to run. A notepad file will open. Copy that information into your next reply, please.

Re: no control panel virus
Well, there's your short answer, in HKLM.
Better if we look in more depth. Please do this: Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
What DSS will do:

Re: no control panel virus
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see you have more than one Anti-Virus program installed, Windows Live OneCare, which seems to be outdated, and Norton While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Choose one to keep and uninstall the other. Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program. For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this: re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: no control panel virus
ok i guess this is going to be a big problem because i cant get rid of windows live onecare, and i only used it as a free 90 day trial subscription so norton is my main anti-virus. this virus that i have prevents me from accessing the add/delete programs thing and there isn't an option to delete it in the start menu.

Re: no control panel virus
Sorry about that...run ComboFix first, then perform the uninstall.
ComboFix will grant you access to your Control Panel again.

Re: no control panel virus
Ok, from your HJT log, it seems as though you were able to uninstall Windows Live OneCare, is that correct?

Re: no control panel virus
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: no control panel virus
Locate and delete this file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\cnte-dhncgts.jar-140fad2a-50e3476f.zip Let me know if you have troubles with that. Other items are in Norton Quarantine. Delete the contents of this folder, but not the folder itself: C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine Other than that..... Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OKcombofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points. Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
